Illinois 77, Tennessee-Martin 74 POSTGAME

One concern I see from this game and EIU game is that the opponents learn to beat down our defense easily at the end of game. Set a pick then we switch. Then throw the ball into the paint then it's a layup. Our lack in frontcourt depth makes this worse.

Our coaches see this too. It's a work in progress.

Sure...anything for you TC!

The fact that he is contributing meaningful minutes and has exceeded his point total for past season.....cup cake or not, may be considered a " leap" ( realize it depends on your personal definition of "leap" though).

AJ would have NOT taken that drive to the basket or shot the 3 and got fouled last year...no way...

he is showing confidence that the previous coaching didn't instill in him and that BU and staff ARE showing him....BU even said he needs to get AJ MORE minutes....

Yes , he is showing a leap in confidence and his hard work is paying off...BU said AJ is usually in the gym before BU gets there...

Trent Frazier is really fast. Love watching him push the ball up the court.

We are going to be super good on offense if we can hit just a reasonable percentage from 3.

Lots of concerning things in this game, but I don't have mental energy to devote to being concerned about basketball...I'll let Underwood worry about it :)

Quick thoughts:
Tale of 2 halves for sure
Black-Jordan seem to have made great strides, lets hope it continues
Finke needs to become more aggressive for 6-10
Williams seems to flow with the game, he will get his minutes
Frazier and Lucas seem to be a very very good 2 PG team so far
Smith is way more talented and engaged than most any freshman we have had for some time.
Nichols is one of the most athletic, needs more minutes
Alstork, hasn't really shown me much as of yet to be honest...for a grad transfer, if this stays the norm, I can understand why BU is not fond of taking them.

overall good win for a young team...so far peaks and valleys for games, it will be the norm this year, but it will be fun to watch for a change.

a double double in his first game showed me something...

IMO both Smith and Alstork are scorers not shooters as opposed to JCL who was a shooter. We won some games last year with excellent shooting and got run out of games with bad shooting. This years team will not depend on three point shooting but taking it to the basket for lay ups or free throws. Mark Smith is way ahead of most freshmen in his ability to get to the rim and to finish. Ahead of some past Illini who most of us consider great players.
However if we are to beat teams like MSU we must also shoot the threes as their front court will be very good at protecting the rim.

Smith and Alstork are both play makers but I think with Alstork being a 5th yr player I expect a lil more but I think he was just good at the mid-major level and not dominate (not to be insulting or judgmental)

I think Smith is way ahead of Alstork as far as his ability to be a potential next level player....If you watch Smith outside shot its on point ... I think once Smith gets adjusted to the depth perception of shooting without that background or wall of Ubben you will see another side of his game and his ability.....

Alstork is playing tight and nervous right now. We're not seeing him play up to his potential yet. He knows it. Underwood knows it.

But he's gotta be careful, or AJ is gonna take his slot.

For all of the people clamoring for XXX to play more. Who do you suggest playing less?

Nick Anderson...not hardly

That's what I was going to say. Pump the breaks on that type of comparison. When those 3 points and 3 rebounds turn into 18 points, 8 rebounds 2 assists and 1-2 steals per game, scoring from multiple positions on the floor, inside and out....with an uncommon level of athleticism....then the door is open for discussion.

Plus, Nick Anderson was like 6'6''.....

I don't see the comparison in the least bit.

Any chance we get a gif of Leron's behind the back magic? I found myself laughing as I watched it, but I still give him credit for doing it.

He was looking down the whole time while dribbling. But good on him for pulling it off. :D

Some observations from the first 2 games.

Positives:

I like our guards, they will only get better. At 1-2, we have solid depth, not sure if they will be ready this year to emerge as game changers through B1G competition, but they will only get better. Mark Smith seems more comfortable playing in a combo role, than PG.

I also like how we push the ball, one of my biggest pet peeves had been walking the ball upcourt (e.g., Abrams). Style of play is fun.

Concerns:

Our perimeter defense is still very loose, including at guards. We need to tighten up the rest of the pre-conference schedule, one of the most critical games is our early game against Maryland at home, and IMO Anthony Cowan is one of the best PG in B1G and will shine this year without Melo.

Our frontcourt is also a big concern. We have played teams weak in the frontcourt with really no quality bigs. We really do not have many options in the frontcourt, really no depth, and I think we will struggle against teams with strong frontcourts, including Mizzou. Not much we can do, but we definitely need to add with recruiting in the Spring.

Alstork will come around on O. His D has been much better than AJ's. Aj's feet are just too slow.

We don't have one player that will even get 1 vote for the all B1G defensive team. Fundamentally, just not strong defensively as a team.

Second this, and add what is in my mind the biggest positive: getting to the line.

I think our freshman guards, Lucas, and spicy G could ultimately be good defenders- if not this year then in future.

Probably one of my biggest concerns watching last nights game was the way we handling or didn't handle UTM defensive pressure the last few minutes of the game....someone has to step up and take charge with the ball in those situations....we wilted under their half court and full court trapping pressure defense

Shouldn't we be passing v that pressure instead of trying to beat it by dribbling?
