That post-game interview didn’t put him in a good light!
Do you know what does put Mayer in a good light? Quite literally everything since then, from his play on the court to his past two post-game press conferences where he's gone out of his way to praise BU and the program. Here's a taste:
Everybody is on the same page now. It is shown on the court. It is shown in how everyone is answering questions. It's a remarkable turnaround. No reason to dwell on something the team is clearly past.

Im on the record as a pretty big anti-Mayer (and anti Westlake and Austin area basketball in general) poster earlier in the season. Glad to be proven wrong as we moved through the season.
I was also very suspect of him through the rough patch. I am glad to be proven wrong. And I don’t totally think he was taking to the coaching all that well at that point. But now, He’s winning me over with every game he plays.

Not dwelling on it just stating why I think so many of us thought he might be the problem.

I cannot recall a year when an incoming Illinois class has been more impactful than this year.

Our freshmen are really something, we are fortunate.
And that is even with one of them having left the program. Buy how about a round of applause for Ty Rodgers tonight. His best minutes this season. He was all over the glass and extremely physical defensively. So nice cuts to the basket too!

MM in the Michigan State post-game press conference owns up to the fact he shouldn't have voiced his frustrations publically. That's the type of senior leadership you want. He then goes on to heap praise on BU for listening to his concerns and adjusting the schemes. Later on, MM goes so far in praising BU that he says he's scared of sounding like a teacher's pet.
The 3:21 mark is where MM admits he shouldn't have voiced his concerns publically. And the 5:56 mark is where MM continues to praise BU. Again, I just find this level of candor really impressive and why this thing has turned around. There's a lot of trust between the players and the coaching staff.

Co existing with Brad was part of it ... He found out a lot about what food allergies he has, he's been fasting before games now and Fletch has been CRUCIAL in getting his body right ... Shoutout to Palmer for that as well on the nutrition side ...

TJ and Mayer both came in with some injury issues and Fletch has worked nothing short of magic with both of them ... Mayer is shredded now, and conditioning is night and day from arrival ... Dainja before and afters are going to blow people away if they ever get posted ...

I especially cannot wait to see what Jayden, Buck, and Ty look like in a couple years ...

Nico & Perrin have a little ways to go but give Fletch & Palmer some time ...

Also huge shoutout to JW for making sure Fletch and Palmer have not only the resources they need day in and day out but also making sure they are properly compensated for the work they put in to this program that no one sees until the results are posted ... well besides a few ... (y)

As the man himself would say ... Put it in bold dang print ... LEADERSHIP ... ACCOUNTABILITY

Amazing things can happen when teams have both of those things ...

Mayer made sure to shout out Fletch in his post-game comments. Not a lot of other programs that have S+C guys regularly getting mentioned in press conferences like Fletch.

It did look like there was some time when he was gassed especially in the first when everyone had foul trouble but a noticeable improvement from early on when he couldn't handle heavy minutes at all.

Recruits always point to Fletch as well ... Brad knows it is a huge sell on the trail and uses it to his advantage ... The presentations that Fletch gives on visits are incredible ...

Recruits parents and coaches tell me all the time how detailed and personable Fletch gets with kids and the plans he has for them and the results to back it up ... Just an awesome guy ... Lucky to have him ...

I like how we've really taken care of business in the 2nd half of the last few games...must be dumb luck as some on here have pointed out that Brad doesn't make adjustments.
The adjustments tonight was getting our starters back on the court. Danja (21 minutes) and CoHawk (17 minutes) had to sit a lot in the 1st half. Props to our bench for keeping it close so the adjustments could have their way.

Love to see Rodgers really seeming to find his place on the team. High energy today and so many all-out hustle plays on both sides. A few points as well were just icing on the cake!
I thought he played awesome defense on Garcia. Garcia was the one player who could do damage inside/out and Rodgers made it real difficult for him. Awesome defensive play. I thought that spurred 2nd half breakaway

Imagine being an opposing guard...

If you happen to finally get by the human Velcro, Sencire, you may run into a bouncey, energy-filled, and strong TyRodg. After him, Dain looms large with a big body, humongous wing span and quick feet. Next, 6'-9" Matt is looking to swoop in from the weak side to send the ball into the courtside seats. Sheesh.

The defense tonight was outstanding. Loving it.

And there you have it. A sweep over the Gophers the past two days. Really fun to be in the Barn and watch our team play so hard and so well. When they are clicking and motoring up and down the court at full speed it is fantastic basketball. After managing the foul issues in the first half, we came out and just crushed the Gophers in the second half. The Twin Cities Illini Club had a good contingent up in the balcony and they start the ILL - INI chant as the game wound down.
Cool to hear that echoing thru the Barn. Illini basketball keeping us toasty and warm this winter from all the cheering.

You get the feeling that all the adversity has really brought this team together. I get the sense that everybody that is here right now is completely bought in and they want to play for each other. This team is playing with a newfound energy right now. I'm hopeful that Goode can come back and get back up to speed and make big contributions. We could definitely use another shooter.

GO ILLINI!

I said the night we lost to NW that this team had a chance to do with that 03-04 did and that they sort of reminded me of that team. That team had some embarrassing loses to Providence, NW and started conference play at 1-2. I felt back then like I did that night after the NW game. I was ready to give up on this team like I was that team and the only way out was to go on a run like that 03-04 did. So far they are doing that but they have to keep their foot on the pedal and don't let up.

And you are right about needing another shooter and Goode is exactly what we need. He will be coming back at the right time.

The Barn was probably cool in 1928 but my gosh. What a dump. I am glad I can cut that one off my list of B1G road arenas. Forever.
And to the septuagenarian Goober fan that decided to lip off to me for being too loud, if your fans and team didn't suck, you wouldn't have heard us yelling I L L I N I on YOUR court

To the Gopher fans that were not @$#holes and actually wanted to chat about basketball, thanks for being gracious. Good luck with Purdue.
Still sorry that your athletic department won't get you an arena that doesn't smell like manure and stale popcorn.
All that being said, the defensive execution was so much better than a month ago. And that drives everything. I'm also so freaking happy for Lieb, probably more than anybody else.
ROADKILL!!!!!

Honest question: what changed between his time under Groce and now? It's the same Fletch but much better results.

Would rather give those minutes to a kid like Lieb honestly … People clown on that kid but all he does is take care of business off the court, show up to practice and give it everything’s he’s got …

Kid is living his dream … Illinois Basketball … Pretty cool to see

In 2023 where every kid is entitled and thinks they’re going to the league … it’s nice to see a kid who stuck it out when he knows he ain’t gonna play and get rewarded with 10-15 minutes tonight 👍🏻
Gives a nice interview too. Very well spoken. Happy for him.
