Don’t want to be a Debbie Downer in here but it needs to be said. Hum, Jake Davis, and Carey Booth are contributing a lot less than we hoped for at this point. Rotation beyond 8 guys is really weak. Not sure why Ty thought he wouldn’t be playing much…
I try not to post too poorly about players, but I was a Humrichous hater from day 1. When everyone was so excited and declaring him Domask part 2 for some nonsensical reason, I took one look at his highlight clips and said this guy is not athletic enough for the Big Ten. I stand by that assessment.

Underwood only plays 7-8 players. That wasn't going to change this year because we got a bunch of transfers. If you look at the roster, the 7 are Boswell, KJ, White, Ivisic, Morez, Riley, Humrichous. Rodgers clearly thought he was #8. He also probably knew he lost his starting job and said screw this, because as we've seen Underwood has been obsessed with Humrichous.

With Davis, anyone who thought he was going to go from low major Mercer to the Big Ten was kidding themselves. He was destined to be an end of the bench guy from the beginning. With Booth, I did not like a guy who did nothing but take 3s yet only made 29.7%. For reference, I also never liked Coleman Hawkins. Booth doesn't appear to bring any of the other aspects that Hawkins brought to the game.

Ya'll, I've got the first 4 being fouls here at the high school level. (NFHS)

You cannot jump forward into the offensive player. You can be square to the defender and jump up or backwards but not forwards.

The last foul, that's a no call.
That’s my thoughts exactly. The first four were indeed fouls. That last one though… UGH!

Because I have no self control, I sauntered over to TigerBoard. They are taking the loss surprisingly well. But I was surprised by the amount of statements like "they played really well and we nearly beat them" or similar.

We... didn't play all that well. This team has a whole other gear available if we can every find the way to shift into it.

Yes I thought same thing on some of those. He went up vertically with both hands up better than most I've seen this year and was still called for fouls. Pitiful officiating nearly the whole game.
Man, I'm not sure what to tell you guys. I laid it out pretty plainly I think. You don't see Morez jumping forward on those first 4? The first one is more about him not being vertical, I'd say.

Someone on Reddit says Morez is transferring after season. Any truth to him being unhappy?

Some guy on Reddit is saying Morez is unhappy and will be moving on next season. Any truth to this?

I've been watching college hoops for many decades. I can't ever recall seeing a player (let alone a huge one) literally wrap his arms around an opposing player's waist and throw him to the floor, which occurred in the paint as Gates had run onto the floor in anger nearby and was getting teed up.

And... no call. No review. Nothing. Dude should have been teed and tossed. We'd have ended up with four free throws and the ball. Apparently all three of the refs were staring at Gates and no one paying attention elsewhere. Mind bending incompetence.

I also can't recall feeling this dissatisfied after a Braggin' Rights win. But it is indeed a W. And oh my Boswell. Thank goodness he grew up in Champaign and apparently understands what this game means to us.

:illinois:
100% and to watch a 3 point shooter literally get tackled by 2 players shooting a 3 with no call at all was simply crazy? I was a HS ref for almost 30 years, hate to say it but that was just terrible. They talk about high level crew, but if we ever blew 44 fouls in a game that lasted 2:35 minutes we would have been doing JV games the rest of the season?

Imo the issue is the lack of consistency. Morez may have jumped slightly forward with guys jumping into him looking for a foul but on most nights and even in this game that isn't going to be called a foul 5 outta 5 times before the Gates T. . No way they call those in the NW game or even thus one each time prior to the Gates T. Also, what about Morez staying calm when literally thrown to the floor and no double T called. I was shocked BU didn't ask for a video review. That was far worse than the kick in the head. Anyway if that was Damonrte that was playing and thrown we woulda had a brawl and the refs gotta be more consistent. Gates was rewarded for running on the floor and his player throw Morez to the ground
. Morez showed some poise today when he I'm sure was very frustrated and annoyed

Underwood has called him an elite shooter. More than once.

In a way, this game was like the Tenn. see game. A constant parade of free throw shots at both ends. Neither game was a "good" game. Nevertheless, we got the W, which is always job one.

Yes, TB is taking the loss very well. I don't think it is because of Christmas though as they are normally a savage bunch. Quite a few members dislike Gates for various good (and bad) reasons is part of it. But I also believe it is mainly the success and focus on their FB team. In sum, apathy.

My first bragging rights game, and I had an absolute blast. More importantly, I figured this board would appreciate this pic

I understand that about WR and his future but a lot of the critiques of BH apply to WR right now.

He didn’t play well on a “few” plays…he played very good D the majority of plays. He’s had his struggles for sure but to keep piling on today is not based on reality.

The shooting slump is the issue b/c that’s what you really need him to do. But the reality is that he is a space creator even if he’s not hitting his shots b/c he is a threat. Nobody else on this team gives you that.

And let me be clear, he’s deserved criticism for sure. But some of the comments on todays game are off-base.
Ben is a one year player. Riley you bench him, he transfers. That simple. Not saying Riley is a whole lot better than Ben but at least he rebounds.

I hope he's not following the child beater and wonder why you are

Let’s just clear this air a bit here.

Nobody is “hating” BH. None of this criticism is “hate”.

It is very obviously pointing out that Ben is not deserving of all the minutes he is getting. Especially at the expense of Morez.
Today really exposed this and if the end of the game is any indication, BU and staff may just be coming around.

He was billed as an elite shooter. He is not. He’s a good shooter struggling against high level completion. He gives nothing else extra vs Morez, Tre, and probably Booth at this point.

And there are legit basketball minds pointing all of this out. It’s not just a couch avocado fan grumbling.
Is avocado the new potato?

Great to see the guys pull out a tough win. Boswell is just a beast and is the most important piece on this team, in my opinion. His leadership, effort, and overall consistency is incredibly valuable for this young team. Best two-way player we have. Really love what KJ can do, particularly with the pick and roll and hitting big shots when the offense doesn't generate easy looks. Once he cleans up the turnovers, we're going to be a really tough team to beat.

Would love to see our guys learn to maintain leads moving forward. Teams go on runs, sure, but you can't keep surrendering 7, 8, 10 point leads (which we did four or five times in the second half) and expect to consistently win games. We were the superior team, and yes the officiating sucked, but we repeatedly pulled out to a comfortable lead and then gave away the momentum: bad fouls (Riley fouling a 3 point shooter from behind), cough up turnovers (two in a row on KJ), missed bunnies at the basket, etc.. Gotta stay hungry, minimize the unforced errors, and step on their throats.

Would also love to see a couple plays to get Riley easy looks early on or get him to the line, so he can start building his confidence back up.

Last thought: tonight's game shows why Morez needs to play more and why that's a complicated proposition for the staff. If Morez and Tomi are both on the bench with foul trouble, who are our center and PF? Ben and Booth?
