The Illini shoot 19% from 3 and get outscored 30-15 from the arc. We are minus-3 in turnovers, including that gift on the inbounds (I think Brad needs to clarify which open guy should get the pass — one wearing our jersey).
And yet they win. On the road. A looong way from home. Against a team that just beat a good Maryland team. Color me impressed that the Illini can win a game like this.

I may be in the minority here but I absolutely loved what I saw today. Some amongst our fan base think every game should turn out like the Oregon game. I saw perseverance, composure, and resiliency today on the second game of a west coast road trip. Sooo many Illini teams in the past would have folded in this situation.
This. And KJ had a "immafukintakethisgameoveryoubunchaloozersbecauseyoupizzedmeoff" look on his face the entire 2nd half.

Man those last 4 3 pt attempts I wish would have gone inside. Anybody watching the game new that’s where we were winning. Those were wide open looks by Tomi, he just missed them.
I'm genuinely torn on this.

If your team's identity is shooting 3s and you're getting open looks, it's kind of hard to go away from that. But, on the other hand, we were owning them inside. Sometimes, you have to just say "damn the analytics" and go with what's working in a game. This kind of goes with my general idea that Underwood is great at working with a team over the long-term and game to game while not always being the greatest coach at making in-game adjustments. But the success is awfully hard to argue with.

Sign of growth today. Faltered late but closed unlike Northwestern. Found a way to win when we couldn't buy a three!
I tried to take some action shots of those threes from the stands - and we missed like 6 in a row. The second I stopped snapping pictures we started making shots again. Needless to say I stopped what I was doing.

On the trip west, KJ basically played only one half against Oregon, and Boswell one half against Washington. And the Illini win both. That’s how valuable DGL is. He adds a different dimension with his explosiveness… and he finishes at the rim.
I have such great respect for how he plays his role, no matter what that role might be game to game. And I think that role is becoming very defined.

I’m just a lowly high school coach, but learned this from a great mentor of mine. Here you go, Brad.

“Circle”

Stack your 5 and your 1, with 3 (best scorer) and 2 (or 1) standing on opposite sides of the fence/stack.

3 breaks in front of the fence, using it as a screen, 2 breaks behind, as the safety option.

Hit 3 going to basket, if he’s not open, can throw to 1 in backcourt.

Once 2 and 3 finish their “circle”. 5 backpedals deep as a “throw it up high” option and 1 breaks towards ball as option to pass in and then hand it off to 4.

Preferred outcome: Layup to 3.
Alternatives: Backcourt to 2, short pass to 1, high pass to 5.

Once teams scout it, can simply reverse the direction of the circle or have them “fake” the normal circle and reverse it.

We need more of this. I wouldn't mind a whole thread of offenseive sets from our best and brightest.

I will say, it was fun learning we were the first-ever team to play against them at the Pavilion back in 1927. And then we hadn't been back until today.
That is true in terms of Iliinois playing Washington. But Illinois did play in this arena in the 1952 Final Four (and how crazy is it to think that once upon a time, an arena of this size hosted the Final Four!!)

Some thoughts...

- Their length affected us, but it's going to be useful for us to learn from. Kasparas was having trouble getting where he wanted to when they blitzed, but he adjusted. If Kasparas had 1 extra gear, he would be the number 1 pick in the draft. There are times when I wish he could get just a hair more separation on drives. He more then makes up for it with his IQ...enjoy every game he's here.

- I love Will, and I think his ceiling is sky high, but it looks like the game is super fast for him right now. It feels like he just can't find a rhythm in the offense and he's pressing a lot. His body needs a lot of work. I pray he comes back a second year, if he leaves early it's going to be a huge mistake in my opinion. Along with that, thank God for Tre White...

- Ben was...OK, but I need a mean streak if he's gonna try to bang in the paint. Too many soft takes and bunnies missed.

- DGL is... maybe my favorite watch and maybe on the cusp of being a "real" guy. There is probably a conversation to be had if he is you're starting guard at 30 min a game next year. He is becoming a must play guard. His first step and athleticism is NBA ready right now. He is a blur, and its everything...lateral quickness, leaping ability, first step, defense...he's a terrific athlete. If he keeps working, I think he could be REAL good as a Junior...and he's only getting better right now.

- The late game mistakes have got to be cleaned up...it's becoming a habit and it has to stop. We have, and will continue to lose games if we can't execute in late game situations.

- When we hit 3's, I think we are one of the best teams in the nation. I need to see improvement in the half court offense, pick and roll game...what is our plan when the game gets snail paced? I want to see them carve out an identity.

- I'm overall pleased...they didn't play all that well and beat a long, solid team at home who had a guard go apesh*t from 3. Take the win, learn and get better.

Nice to win on the road without playing their best and grind it out with the three point shot not falling.

Lucky the turnover on the In-Bounds didn’t end up deciding anything. They have got to clean that up. Teams honestly should press for a steal every in-bound the way Illinois struggles with it.

It was probably brought up in the game thread, but I also twitched at "first time Illini have been back in Seattle since 1927".

DGL is getting confident and we are watching a future professional player grow up before us.

He drives so violently to the basket on a drive this year. Much like TJ Shannon did last season. It has been a privilege to watch him “mature” before our eyes.

Go Illini!

Is Osobor really making $2 mill? If so, man alive is that a colossal waste of $-I wasn't impressed at all by him. 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals is not worthy of a $2 million dude. We paid Tomi significantly less and he went for 9 points, 9 rebounds, and I thought it was one of his worst games.
