You are right. He basically threw the whole team under the bus. Their defense was probably as good as Arkansas'.
Yep, Altman is the first coach ever to use the post game press conference to get a message across to his team about effort, hustle, digging deep and doing the hard things — basically every day guy things. I wonder if Brad will ever do something like that? 🙄

No idea what Arkansas’ D has to do with that game. Is that how Altman measures his team?

From the box score:
1. 34 minutes for Ben and only 10 for Riley. I'd almost like to see that reversed. I realize we can't have too many freshmen on the floor at once, but come on.
2. It seems like KJ has become the clear leader of this team, in a low key deferential sort of way. Maybe Bos too.
3. 19% from distance, but we still found a way to win in a hostile environment. Illini are for real!
4. Four players in double figures, and they are the ones you'd expect and/or predict. We talked a lot last October about how long it would take this team to gel. I think we're seeing that now.

Not sure if your being sarcastic but this is done often by coaches. I'm sure you remember BU making those "passing gas" noise to describe the defense against Mizzou x 2 years ago. Or saying he needed to recruit players that can make contested layups or play when the lights are brightest, or guys where coaching effort isn't necessary.

He has been much more positive than the early years though.

I’m just a lowly high school coach, but learned this from a great mentor of mine. Here you go, Brad.

“Circle”

Stack your 5 and your 1, with 3 (best scorer) and 2 (or 1) standing on opposite sides of the fence/stack.

3 breaks in front of the fence, using it as a screen, 2 breaks behind, as the safety option.

Hit 3 going to basket, if he’s not open, can throw to 1 in backcourt.

Once 2 and 3 finish their “circle”. 5 backpedals deep as a “throw it up high” option and 1 breaks towards ball as option to pass in and then hand it off to 4.

Preferred outcome: Layup to 3.
Alternatives: Backcourt to 2, short pass to 1, high pass to 5.

Once teams scout it, can simply reverse the direction of the circle or have them “fake” the normal circle and reverse it.

Nothing infuriates me more than watching players frantically scramble instead of setting a proper screen and coming off it. Just a lack of discipline IMO

Yes, it was sarcasm. Original poster labeled Dana’s comments as throwing his whole team under the bus. He’s just using the press conference the way countless other HCs do, including as you point out our own BU.

Should have the /s label, I guess. I know coaches do this often enough but still...

Not sure if this was mentioned, because like......skipped a lot of pages.....

But did anyone notice the dramatic change in Ben's court presence? He seemed much more confident and active. This bodes very well for us because in spite of him being this years most... let's say controversial player... our ceiling has a lot to do with his level of contribution.

How can you not be sure if he was being sarcastic?!? 😳

2-4 are spot on.

While I have been a Big Ben hater recently, to his credit he has stepped up his game all around. Had a fantastic defensive game against Oregon to go along with his breakout offense. Riley has been in a slump since the start of conference play and it’s been a brutal one. Davis has shown a lot more and coach is rewarding him with more PT.

Riley is a defensive liability and isnt taking good shots (and missing them). Until he matures his game, the PT split we saw in this game is reasonable.

Update: Two more to go. We’ll revisit this list next season.

Brad Underwood: Road Warrior!

At Illinois, Brad has won a road game on every B1G campus where he’s coached. Checked off Oregon tonight and only has the other three Pac Newcomers to finish off.

Indiana - Assembly Hall ✅
Iowa - Carver-Hawkeye Arena ✅
Maryland - Xfinity Center ✅
Michigan - Crisler Center ✅
Michigan State - Breslin Center ✅
Minnesota - Williams Arena ✅
Nebraska - Pinnacle Bank Arena ✅
Northwestern - Welsh-Ryan Arena ✅
Ohio State - Value City Arena ✅
Penn State - Bryce-Jordan Arena ✅
Purdue - Mackey Arena ✅
Rutgers - Jersey Mike’s Arena ✅
Wisconsin - Kohl Center ✅
Oregon - Matthew Knight Arena ✅
Washington - Hec Edmundson Pavilion ✅
UCLA - Pauley Pavilion
USC - Galen Center

If not for the collapse at Penn State last year, Brad would have a win at every road venue. Rec Hall will likely remain his elusive white whale.

Ben was also pretty good defensively against Washington

I just don't know what you are seeing in Riley that makes you think he needs 20 more minutes a game. He's hesitant to shoot three pointers and his drives to the hoop are adventurous at best. To his credit, he's pretty decent at putbacks off rebounds. His shooting confidence is gone, and he's not any better defensively than Ben.

He never attended a JUCO.
His two years prior to Evansville were spent with Huntington University, which is an NAIA school. If we don't count those years, he has at least two years of eligibility after this one. There might even be an argument for a third COVID year as well, but that would really be pushing the envelope.

As most anybody could tell, he also needs to get bigger and stronger. I can't imagine any NBA team showing interest in him at this point in time.

Ben would be a great veteran next year if he’s eligible to come back. Have we heard if that option is becoming more likely? A full offseason with Fletch would benefit him more than any player outside of Riley IMO.

They gave Ben a lot more opportunities to initiate his own offense starting from the Oregon game, which seems to help. While I don't think his iso offense is as good as, say, Trey White, it is probably better than Will at this point.
