Interesting analogy..Not sure Black handles the ball as well, but better on the boards.

At the same age I think Leron handles it better. His stats so far are a little better than Draymond's JR year. I think Leron is quite a bit more athletic of the two as well. If he was 2" taller he could get into a lottery discussion at some point with his play.

It still baffles me that a Big Ten team falls back into a zone defense against mid-majors consistently. You would think our players, as a whole, are significantly more athletic/gifted than middle tiered teams but it doesn't seem that way.

Nope, we really don't have much athleticism, especially quickness. All that pumping iron we did over the summer probably didn't help that either. But you can still play good man defense without it, we just don't help well, especially on screens.

Not even close. Hill is averaging more points (18.4 vs 12.8), one less rebound (8.0 vs 7.0), more assists (2.1 vs 0.5), and more steals (1.0 vs 0.0).

I'm a huge fan of Leron but the thought that he's better than Malcolm is comical.

Agreed Hill (the senior) is better than Black ( the sophomore) this year but
- it is not "comical" comparison.
- Black (the sophomore) looks better than Hill (when he was a sophomore)
- Hill is certainly the better offensive player and probably always will be, but Black will likely be a better all around player and pro prospect.
I hope they can go up against each other in the nba in a few years!!!

Obviously that was stressful but at least we won. Teams like this are beating or at least hanging in with really good teams this year so I think we all need to keep that in mind. It was good to win a close one, especially being behind fairly late in the game. Just keep winning games! In march if we win enough. We won't care how it looked! This time last year our season was over. We are in some trouble but we still can have a great season

I don't expect our bigs to get better on defense (except Black). They are not athletic enough and don't have the foot work. Maybe we go small with Leron and Kipper up front. I am just saying at times.

Both Morgan and Finke are slow of foot, you can teach them how to play basketball but you can't teach them to be quicker, they are what they are.

The comparison was between the players this year, who will be a better pro prospect is an entirely different argument. Hill dominates in every statistic besides averaging a single less rebound, to me that makes the comparison comical. I hope Leron keeps forcing the argument, however.

Pretty sure Malcolm and Leron are the same age. Malcolm just turned 21 and Leron will turn 21 in January. This is technically Leron's junior year anyways.

Just noticed this but 13 of the 14 B1G teams are in the Top 100. Lots of opportunities for quality wins if the team takes care of business in the final 3 non con games (one of which is also against a Top 100).

John Groce can't play defense for Finke and Mav. Coach is accountable for his team but those players need to step it up while they're wearing an Illini jersey.

Can't teach speed and quickness, but you can teach position defense

Malcolm scored efficiently tonight. I don't think he will ever truly have that LB bulldog mentality, just doesn't seem to be in his blood. However, he always seems laid-back, calm and collected which I think is a plus at times. Also enjoyed him throwing down some dunks today that he would prolly lay in last year.

Love Leron's game and energy. He should get significant minutes and only come out when in foul trouble. Seems like he dropped his moving screen foul average from 1.5/Game to 0.5/game so that should help.

Not a fan of Tate on the floor purely because the offense is stagnant. I can accept occasional TO's from TJL as long as they are aggressive moves to the hoop.
Middle tiered teams generally smaller and quicker, we can't do quick

Malcolm missed the front of a 1-and-1 at the 6:45 mark. I didn't attribute it to the wrong guy, but it wasn't as "final minutes" as I thought. It was, however, in a very close game. As were his two turnovers after that point.
I think he more than made up for a single missed free throw with the 5 or 6 clutch shots he made in the actual final minutes of the game.

On a positive note, we wore the fighting Illini jerseys again! I hope these are the only jerseys we wear at home ever again. (do we have road ones?) As long as the alternative is what we have now. Im looking forward to breaking out the greys though.

Once again Groce praising Morgan and Tate. I'm about sick of hearing him talk up Tate. Tate could have 10 turnovers and 1 assist and Groce would praise him for his 1 assist. He played bad again tonight. He needs to sit.

It was a big steal, but ya I agree. Tate has not been good. I'm okay with him getting a couple minutes to give Abrams or Lucas a breather, but not at the end of games. Abrams should run the point right now at the end of games, maybe later in the year, Lucas.

I am pretty sure it is only because we were winning and in a situation where they were likely to foul. Yes, Jaylon did miss the front end of a one and one, but he is one of the best FT shooters on the team. Additionally, he is quick and not terrible at staying in front of guards. If we were desperately looking for baskets, I would agree that he should not be on the floor, but I think Groce used him correctly.

Honestly, Tate had nothing to do with the end of the game being so close. Our defense was lackluster and we gave up way too many rebounds. Both of those are on everyone out there on the floor.

I realize that there were some issues tonight with our defense and overall play but I wonder if anyone else feels like I do, that some of these smaller school teams look really good at times. For a while there these guys were making shots like crazy. A couple of weeks ago I watched Fort Wayne beat Indiana who were ranked number 3 in the country at the time. It didn't look like a fluke. Fort Wayne looked really good that night, throughout the entire game! If you didn't see the name on the jerseys I would have to say that IUPUI looked better tonight than VCU did on Saturday. I get concerned about our ability to consistently play at a top notch level, but I do believe that these small schools, on certain nights are better than expected. Just an observation.
