Illinois 85, IUPUI 77 POSTGAME

I agree with many that our defense has been porous this year. However, tonight I think they hit more flukey shots than normal for a team in a game. I think I screamed wrf was that about 5 times at my tv tonight.

I realize that there were some issues tonight with our defense and overall play but I wonder if anyone else feels like I do, that some of these smaller school teams look really good at times. For a while there these guys were making shots like crazy. A couple of weeks ago I watched Fort Wayne beat Indiana who were ranked number 3 in the country at the time. It didn't look like a fluke. Fort Wayne looked really good that night, throughout the entire game! If you didn't see the name on the jerseys I would have to say that IUPUI looked better tonight than VCU did on Saturday. I get concerned about our ability to consistently play at a top notch level, but I do believe that these small schools, on certain nights are better than expected. Just an observation.

The parity in college bball has been shifting the past several years. Kids at some of the lower levels are closing the talent gap and I think some of the reasons for that are that kids are playing so much and developing more thanks to AAU, and also because kids won't sit on the bench at a high major and wait for their turn as an upper classmen like they used to. In today's game, if there isn't enough playing time after 1 or 2 years, kids are transferring out instead of waiting and competing in practice. This is sending a lot of talented kids to some lower level teams where they can get pt, rather than being backups at the high major level

Two things about those highlights
We sure look better when you cherry pick the footage. More slashes and cuts, faster. That was fun
No homer Drew was so much better

At the same age I think Leron handles it better. His stats so far are a little better than Draymond's JR year. I think Leron is quite a bit more athletic of the two as well. If he was 2" taller he could get into a lottery discussion at some point with his play.

Leron is playing great right now. His jumper is money and his hustle phenomenal! BUT, he definitely does not have better handles than Draymond Green has/or ever had. I have seen nothing to show me that Leron Black can handle the ball well. Additionally, Draymond was someone that Michigan State ran offense through. His passing has always been plus, especially for a 3/4 man.

Side note: I cannot stand Draymond Green.

He is projected as a top ten tweener.

Black will never play in the NBA. He is coming on strong as a player at Illinois but he does not have the skill or the size to play in the NBA. Thinking of that unnecessary dribble he took off his foot after a great offensive rebound late in the game. Not a high basketball IQ guy.

He's just early in his second year and has plenty of time to progress. He does one thing at an elite level and that's rebounding. That alone might be enough to make a team. It might not but it's waaay to early to say he will never play in the NBA. Continued improvements on offense will only strengthen his chances.

Thy dribble off his foot was an attempt to make a move and go back up with a shot. Had it not gone off his foot he probbaly would've gotten fouled and had two free throws. That's an often seen circumstance on an offensive rebound right there. He just happens to bounce of his shoe, which is not uncommon on said play. It's not a low iq play.

If he can start hitting those three's, which I believe will happen he's really close and his shot doesn't look that bad, and if he can handle the ball better, he's gonna be given a shot. I know its not even a close comparison of players, but even Egwu got his NBA shot. he was an average (if that) offensive player, but excelled at defending and a few other aspects. He wasn't your typical player but he has a skillset that lent itself to being developed. I think Leron looks like a better NBA prospect thatn Egwu did his Sophomore year. Again, not comparing them one to one in terms of whos a better NBA prospect for a specific position, it was just a good example of a UI player who didn't look NBA ready, but was still given a shot.

I thought the same, NBA 3s, a couple lucky scoops and a banker

Happened against Winthrop too. Teams are gonna hit those sometimes, including us. Malcolm has hit a few already this year, I think it was the NCST game he was at the right elbow and goes up trying to draw a foul, ball goes in, no call. Just how it happens.

His progress says otherwise. Saying that 1 play is indicative of his ball handling and IQ is ridiculous IMO
1. Rebounding is one of the most proven skills in college to translate to the NBA.
2. He's only a soph, and his progress is noticeable. He'll get stronger.
3. He's shown flashes of a shot. If he can score with a mid-range game, that makes him more dangerous inside.
4. His hustle/motor are exceptional
5. He plays up well - had solid games in our losses

At the start of the season, I'd have agreed with the board that Hill was our best player. Now, I'm not so sure I wouldn't take Leron, after seeing how he's be able to play against better competition. Hill's been very productive overall, but he was much quieter in our biggest games.

just because he doesn't frequently doesn't mean he can't. he has also been pretty instrumental in breaking presses. more than once I have watched him take a pass in the backcourt and bring it up

I'm not convinced. You are right; just because he doesn't frequently, doesn't mean he can't, but just because you showed me one clip that he was able to go from top of the key straight to right side of rim, doesn't sway me either.

Maybe he will change my mind when he starts showing some more ball-handling, but I doubt he will show that.

Leron's success scoring and his frequent touches on the low block (from rebounds, mostly) should offer him an opportunity to make good passes to open three-point shooters. I'd love to see that part of his game improve. He has 5 assists so far all season. He could easily average two a game if he continue to be the scoring threat he has. And sharing the ball helps a lot more than just the two or three points it might result in.

Thats fair, but a guy has 3 good games against 3 unranked teams and all of a sudden people start saying a 6'7 PF is NBA bound..cant buy it.
