Illinois 85, Maryland 80 Postgame

Willard's head scratching clock management in the final minute made this one much less agonizing than it could have been. You have to foul there. It probably adds two possessions to a two-possession game. He didn't give them a chance. I told my wife as soon as they let Marcus dribble up the court, Willard just blew it. We had to make a few clutch FTs, but not nearly as many as we should have.
Yeah, that was just complete incompetence. There are 5th graders that understand the game better than that.

This guy gets 500k base; but it’s about 4 million dollars a year when it’s all said and done.., WHAT A COUNTRY! amirite?

I just read this/other comments on the Terps blogs. I guess a whole bunch of ppl are bent out of shape out over what they think is disrespect to their coach “Lefty” (equivalent of our Lou) by IL players during their pregame tribute. If it is true, it’s a really bad look and goes beyond playful trolling. Anyone know the facts?

Edit: at least one Maryland fan has some self awareness..

Comment by "Terrapins Rising"???

Late to the party but how would our players be taking videos or post them pregame never seen any player have a cell phone out during that time

We won but got outcoached. Underwood's old school bullheadedness refusal to play zone against one of the worst three pointing shooting teams is laughable....unless you're rooting for that team. It cost them the first time that they played them and it almost did again. We won because the talent level was so much different. Nothing else.

Did we watch the same game?

There were changes made defensively that I thought were good. We didn't always execute well once the ball was passed out of the double team, but we have added a new wrinkle to scout against and we can get better with practice.

Do you think a coach just tells his players "Let's play zone now"?

Not because of him. It’s because other members of the team have regressed and we aren’t making necessary adjustments in our schemes. There’s no way you could watch our recent games and think it’s because of TSJ.
Yeah I mean TSJ has proven he’s a plus defender so it doesn’t make sense that this team would be worse defensively with him on the floor. BUT. We have been less efficient on D since he’s been back. Idk what to make of it

Maybe...maybe not. MD made us look like middle-schoolers on defense, and that didn't happen by accident. There will be teams that can negate our talent, and we have already seen that teams with lesser talent that play with discipline give us fits.

This. We’re not a zone team. We’re never going to be a zone team. There are only so many hours the get to be in court to practice. Yeah we can throw a zone in there for a couple of possessions and we did throw a matchup zone in there for a hot second. The idea of playing a zone because they can’t shoot and it’s going to work because if that is like the idea that Ty should shoot 3s because he's open.

Jason loves to broadcast baseball but he is better at calling roundball. He stays focused on the game action and does not wander into obscurities and side/inside jokes that lose much of the baseball audience.

He's going to be at the very top of a network sports perch before its over.
That is one of the great reasons he is a great baseball announcer. You need to have a play by play in baseball who goes in other directions. Baseball is a much different game to call and I certainly do not want to hear just baseball talk for 3 hours a game 162 times a year. You need someone who has the ability to blend other topics in.
