This. We’re not a zone team. We’re never going to be a zone team. There are only so many hours the get to be in court to practice. Yeah we can throw a zone in there for a couple of possessions and we did throw a matchup zone in there for a hot second. The idea of playing a zone because they can’t shoot and it’s going to work because if that is like the idea that Ty should shoot 3s because he's open.
I agree with your point, but I would like to see Ty take a 3 every once in a while when no one is guarding him. I figure he might make it 20% of the time, and another 20% we get the rebound and score on the second chance. And if he actually makes 1, they have to at least think about guarding him.

We won but got outcoached. Underwood's old school bullheadedness refusal to play zone against one of the worst three pointing shooting teams is laughable....unless you're rooting for that team. It cost them the first time that they played them and it almost did again. We won because the talent level was so much different. Nothing else.
I actually agree with this.

I mean, I've never seen a coach:

1) catch a live ball while in bounds,

2) yell at and then

3) point a finger in the face of the opposing teams best player in front of the refs and

4) not only not get T'd up but your team gets the ball?

That's some Jedi like skills at work

Closing time, I believe Ty has earned being out there, but I wouldn't give up on Goode, yet. I know he's struggling now on the offensive end, and he's probably losing some confidence. I still believe he can contribute.

He has the potential to go on a mini-three-point barrage to either get the Illini back into a game, or extend a lead. It's tough because of his defensive liabilities. I hope he can improve because he has been effective, at times, by getting some big rebounds on both sides of the ball or have a dive-for-the-ball type play.

Gradually, BU can try and get Goode back to form.

Yeah, it sure would be better to have Willard, the Coaching Wizard…

Have watched Seattle U a bunch of times when they were D2. Haven't kept too much track of them since though.
Life in lower mid major land is a whole other experience. SU took U Washington to double OT this year before losing 100-99.

This isn't a middle school league. Suggesting playing a zone against a team for an entire game when you haven't practiced it much all year makes no sense at all. Doesn't work like that (aside for a possession here and there to throw the opponent off).

Right....He "quit" is code for he was going to be fired

My understanding was it was mutual. I always thought he was a pretty decent coach but with an abrasive personality. The irrational Maryland fans turned on him and sounds like admin did too, so seemed like a - “if I’m gonna leave, it’ll be on my terms” kind of situation

a great win in a tough environment, against a good team, proud of our guys. All contributed, focused and composed, Terrance looking like Terrance and playing as a team, again, a great win!

im concerned that TSJ will be "out of control" in the eyes of non-big ten officials come tournament time and
not get those foul calls.

He's astoundingly good at avoiding charges considering the runaway freight train style in which he plays.

Sometimes refs don't give him the whistles against the defense, but he very rarely puts himself at risk of an offensive foul, he's so slippery he never hits a guy squarely.

Exactly, when TSJ is going downhill and attacking at basketball it’s almost impossible to get in front of him. He’s so explosive and has great body control.

Also Hummel was commenting how the block/charge rule change this year really benefits him. Much harder for defenders to get set up since they have to be there even earlier. Last year he got called for charges pretty regularly and it's been rare so far this year.

With what he's showing this year as a passer when defenses overcommit to walling off the lane, he is going to excel in those situations in the NBA.

Both he and Hawkins are having fantastic years improving the weaknesses in their NBA stocks, IMO. Plus they get money and Illinois wins, the system works!

I'm no scout, but I see no way Hawkins is not an NBA player. Especially with how his 3 point percentage has improved this year.

6'10" rim protector who can guard 1-5 (in fairness guarding 5's is increasingly a worry) and can't be left alone in the corner is the starter kit for getting NBA scouts intrigued, someone is definitely going to give him a chance.

This team needs everyone to contribute, including Goode. He’s definitely been in a funk, probably gotten into his own head a bit, but I am optimistic that the staff can get him back on track by tourney time.

Well the NBA is a small pool of players in relation to the now global game of basketball. He is projected currently around 50th overall and a good number of players are from overseas and some from the G League. How many college players will actually get drafted and stick? TSJ is likely the 2nd best player in the B10 and is projected in the 20s. Its tough to make a roster and how many college players will actually make it? This is a global game now more than ever and its getting g so difficult to make it. Right now I believe the only Illini in the league is Ayo and we have had some solid players and even All Americans that are not in the NBA. Hopefully Hawkins can make it there. I am rooting for him and he will have a lot to ponder in April.

Huge difference is his ability to go right this year. Teams could load up left side and he didn’t have room to maneuver. I think he made tremendous improvement.

Shannon is passing more effectively and not dribbling into a muck as often as last season. He started off shooting better too and hopefully gets that rolling like vs Michigan.
