Illinois 85, Maryland 80 Postgame

Devils advocate..and im gonna go a little nerd here, but Probablity wise though, in this game wasnt Hamer right? Especially given we were up 6 and not like 3?

Before that 3, they were 3/17 so less than a 20%, so the expected value of a 3 was like half a point. THey were 80% from the line so the EV of 2 fts is 1.6....

Of course you can go off "worst" case and just go 3 vs 2...but i think there can be two reasonable schools of thought on this one in this game.

Plus, you say DHS hit the 3? He's shooting 19% on the year
Yeah I'm not fouling in that situation. Make them make the 3. Fouling there and giving them points with no time running off the clock is a bad decision. We were in foul trouble too

My husband, who would admit he's not a sports tactician in the least, was on about this, too. When the dude who tells you he doesn't know anything is questioning you... 😬
Well, maybe he's like me. When my wife asks me a question that would require reasonable explanation time, I ususally just say, "I don't know".

It was under a minute left ... TJ was at the line for FTs and right before DHS hit that 3 ... Hamer stood up and gave the no foul signal ... Not Brad ... Hamer ...

In that situation ... I am 100000% fouling ... Because of exactly what happened ... DHS hits that 3 ...

Literally was losing my mind ...
Maybe he was worried about overtime or last shot? Guh. That's a big indicator that he's not ready for the situation, which means he's not ready for the role.

Just... it's so easy. If you aren't coaching an individual, take a deep breath and more than a brief look at the scoreboard. Every late dead ball.

In this situation, make sure players know who has fouls to give and then pull the trigger. It's literally a down-the-middle call. Going overly passive / conservative is exactly what the other team wants you to do and exactly what gets you beat.

Uncharacteristically (for me especially), I was not that bothered by the officiating. There is no way we should have been in the position of this game being up for grabs with under 2 minutes left. We have to be better with a 5-7 point lead. We had several of them that we allowed to evaporate to a 2-3 point lead with poor execution and decisions.
I’m choosing to be happy with a road win at Maryland, but I do agree with this. It felt like we’d be up 5-7 so many times only to give up a 3-point play or something. Come Tourney time, if we are building a second half lead, we have to step on their throats.

are you concerned about the D at all? I know our O made their top 10 D look like it couldn't get a stop, but our D was the other way around against their sub-200 O. Our ceiling is so damn high, but I'd feel a lot better if our D could just perform at a top 40ish level...

People are really down in here but we got a win at Maryland, man. Not even Ayo was able to consistently figure this out when he was here. Makes up for the loss in Champaign and puts us +3 in road wins vs home losses.

It's clear that teams are trying to switch off Terrence and Hawkins consistently, especially when there are quicker, stronger guards who can outrun or outmuscle Domask, Goode, and Rodgers.

Maryland coach was complaining he didn’t get any foul calls?????? There were 60 free throws in the game? What’s he talking about? It’s incredulous. Every time Young drove it seemed like he got a foul called. That game was hard to watch with all of the fouls called. I mean there was some ticky tack baloney being called and letting the hard stuff go. Don’t get it. Anyway great win by the Illini. Tough to keep a lead when the refs keep playing tunes on there whistles all night.

Loved Harmon tonight and his energy.

Ty was great, but he’s gotta learn to either not foul, or foul to ensure a miss down low. Multiple and-1’s he gave up.

Goode… I don’t get it. They don’t run plays to get him threes, and now that he apparently doesn’t rebound anymore, he’s useless. I’m sure the rebounding will regress to the mean, but his matador defense requires some meaningful contribution on defense to justify his minutes.

But we’ll certainly take any W at Maryland!

Thing is, they are down 6 with no time. They aren't going to be running clock off regardless. Not all of the basic leading calls (immediate foul, don't foul a shooter, no threes, no foul, give the layup..) are going to bleed the same clock, but you've also got to consider their move. "No foul" isn't the same as playing off, but it's close enough that you're practically giving the other team whatever they want.

I can agree that it's debatable and that the play is certainly not horrible in a rushed situation, but this was not a rushed situation.
