First game I’ve been to in a long time. First time my wife has actually been to a game in Champaign with me.
Here are a few observations from the weekend:
The wife and I spent Saturday afternoon bar hopping to include lunch and dinner while out. We started in Campus Town and ended the night downtown Champaign.
We talked to a lot of people and it is amazing how few people had a thorough understanding of the TJ situation. Mind blowing. It tells me that we are all avid…much more so than common folk.
I observed in warm ups that the shooting was going to be somewhat sketchy today. No one seemed to have their shooting groove in warm ups. Not sure why….but very easily observed.
When the team came back out after warm ups for the start of the game, it was TJ that led the team out and was the first one on the court - to a tremendous ovation by the crowd. Cool moment. No question this is a unified team.
Another ovation when about 2 1/2 minutes in, he was headed to the scorers table to enter the game. The roar of the crowd was loud well before he even reached the scorers table.
Obviously things started slow for TJ. Appeared he was pressing a bit. When he had the 2 fast breaks and the thunder slam, I thought the roof was going to blow off Assembly Hall. (Yes…it’s still AH to some) Likely that it was shown over and over on TV, but his pose post tomahawk dunk was awesome.
Completely separate, we met the Domask clan and the Goode clan. Both terrific families. Super nice folks. Obviously both players have been “raised right”.
Great game to attend and thanks to my brethren for all the restaurant and bar suggestions. Great weekend back at UIUC.
Side note, on the drive back to STL this afternoon/evening she commented we need to do this monthly during basketball and football season.
Deal.
I L L . . .
So happy for you guys brother........Just watching on TV was awesome , so being there had to be a big thrill......Mama sounds like a keeper.....

Best defensive performance of the year in conference, according to points per possession (0.818), an entire point per possession less than average for Rutgers.

Updated efficiency margin:

Observations:
- Rutgers is done playing Illinois now, so their numbers should smooth out eventually.
- Illinois is done playing Rutgers now, so their numbers should smooth out eventually.
- Still clearly a 3-4 team league (with the 4th spotting the league 2 games), and right now I'm not sure there's a solid tournament resume among the rest. If nobody else finishes above .500 in conference, this could be a 4-bid league.
- Of the rest, I think Northwestern has the best chance to build a winning record, as their opening schedule has been brutal (with their next 3 games being Illinois, Ohio State, and Purdue), but the back half of their schedule should allow them to pile up wins and efficiency, and ending strong should help them in the eyes of the committee.

Does someone know where to find, or can you post, the Illini shot chart for the first half? It seemed like they actually shot horribly on every shot that was not in the paint. Just curious how it actually was...and I do not know where to find this info.

The play of the game today IMO: Coach Frazier, with 10:00 remaining in the second half and Rutgers in-bounding the ball with the lead having been narrowed to 5 points, coerces the crowd to take to their feet and up the energy in the State Farm Center.

What followed:
a defensive stop, including two missed shots in the paint by Omoruyi...
a fast break layup by Shannon...
a steal by Hawkins...
a fast break layup by Shannon...
Rutgers calls timeout with 9:04 remaining. 9-point Illini lead.

The lead never again dropped below 8 points.

DGL seems extremely wise beyond his years, if he has a shot at making the jump, it will definitely happen here and he is smart to trust the process. 95% of kids these days would just default to the portal... Which seems to have bad results unless you are doing it because you are an elite transfer looking to get $$.

Kid is looking to improve his skills, not living in the delusional, "the Skyy is green" mentality where it's the system/coach/school that's holding back your obviouslyyy elite talent.

Yep, crowd finally got into it and the tide turned. Crowd needs to be better in these games and realize they can affect things other than the last 8 minutes of the game.

Does anyone else love everything that comes out of Justin Harmons mouth when he’s being interviewed? Not only is a tenacious competitor but you can just see that he is genuinely a very honest, laid back & caring teammate. & it’s the little things.. “we just want to win”… “I love Coleman he’s smarter than me”.. “our brother TJ is back”… great dude. Listening to these dudes speak about eachother & the joy they have playing for eachother is inspiring and amazing to watch. One of my favorite teams I can remember.

Our last 2 guard that transferred. Are combined, 14-22 wins v losses. They maybe averaging 16.5 and 18.8... I hope that gets you to the league. Good luck transfers! 😆 🤣
Dgl will be outstanding and he will win a ton of games for our Illini.

Super bold, and I'd like to believe that, but I'm not sure I do. Maybe this TEAM is > Ayo/Kofi's squad, but I don't think I could say I could agree with you on that.
Ayo/Kofi squad missing QG. Didn’t have a true PF during the Ayo years. On the other hand if you would replace Ty with Ayo…..
