Illinois 88, Michigan 73 Postgame

Coleman Hawkins was ranked by 247 as the 49th best PF in his class.
Not player... 49th best Power Forward.
Watching him blossom into a bonafide star has been a lot of fun.
This! Total miss by the rankings. At this point I gotta trust our staff more than the rankings on a HS kid. And almost everyone, including myself, on this board held Coleman to a higher standard than the 49th best PF in his class because we saw the potential he possessed. Yes he gets over emotional at times but without that emotion he might just perform as the 49th best PF in his class. Keep on being you Coleman!

It won't be when we need to get stops defensively ... Michigan hunted him out every possession he was in there ...

I really like the kid offensively and I see the potential ... But he has a long way to go defensively in order to see meaningful minutes ... Especially for a coach like Brad where defense is non-negotiable...
He was definitely a defensive liability.

Special game to rebound from the loss to the twerps at home last Sunday.......We are a TEAM of winners.........chemistry is great.....maturity is great ..........BB skills are great...........So sad that our All American is sidelined by some BS allegations.....

I now appreciate the Maryland loss for how much sweeter it made this win, and I'm not ashamed of that. Get Mucked, Juwan.

I don't think Juwan wants that smoke ... :ROFLMAO:

Juwan tried to hit one of our guys ... Y'all would see what Brad was talking bout with that Pizza Hut parking lot ...

Juwan would be saying ...

He was getting cooked!!! And then i noticed we hadn't seen Harmon yet and I felt it was more of a lesson to Harmon than assuming Moretti was a solution to an issue.

Illini followed up their worst effort of the season with one of their best (T-Rank places it 4th by game score behind NW, Missouri and Rutgers). Coleman was the best player on the court by far, Harmon and Rodgers brought it. Defense was much better in the second half after a rough first half, only 6 turnovers on the game, outrebounded Michigan heavily, and pulled down 3/4 of the defensive rebounds in this one after a few bad performances on that end in a row.

Updated EM after a week (since Illinois took the early part of this week off, so did I):

Observations:
- Loss by Wisconsin this week was huge for both Illinois and Purdue, keeping them in striking distance as long as they win games.
- Tonight's Illinois win pushed them back into 2nd in conference EM.
- Only 4 above average teams in the conference (which tracks). MSU finally starting to overcome their 2 game crater to start conference play.
- Minnesota falls back to the back half of the conference with their last 3 performances.
- No team is worse than -0.09 PPP, which means there are no terrible teams. Just not a lot of good teams either at this point.
- Ohio State has also nose dived of late, bad loss to Michigan drops them to a tie for 12th in conference. Though everyone in conference has at least 2 wins now.

B1G Power Rankings, week 4:
1. Purdue - Their two losses keep them within reach of the rest, but they're still a step above
2. Wisconsin - Hey, their bad loss was at least on the road, and they maintain the top EM in the conference right now.
3. Illinois - They are alive after tonight's effort.
4. Michigan State - Still just 3-4 in conference, have some work to do to build a worthy tournament resume, but they're still clearly the 4th best team in this conference right now.
5. Yikes....I mean...Iowa maybe? They've won two straight and have climbed to 5th in conference EM
6. Nebraska - Need to win some games on the road to solidify any tournament hopes
7. Ohio State - Need to win some games period to solidify tournament hopes.
8. Maryland - Still disappointing, but not "worst team in the conference" disappointing anymore.
9. Northwestern - Still 3-2 in conference, but need to build a resume to consider themselves tournament-worthy.
10. Indiana - No show against Purdue, still good defensively.
11. Michigan - Last in the standings, still their 2 wins are both good wins and better than anyone below them.
12. Minnesota - And it started to look so promising...
13. Rutgers - Their offense is somehow worse than Indiana, however that's possible.
14. Penn State - They are 3-4 in conference and still the worst team. Could have a conference year where everyone gets at least 6-7 wins.

This remains an amazing team to watch and root for. The character they showed again tonight is exemplary. This is one of the more memorable seasons in my time as a fan. 1970s to present. Hopefully for the ceiling and not for the potential tragedy.

We lost our best player and are 4-2 since his being sidelined.

This team is capable of a deep tournament run.

Quincy Guerrier ... I think has been the MVP of our season ... I mean that dude is playing at such an elite level ... Might be the best cutter that Brad has had ...

Crashes the glass every possession ... Makes open shots ... Never question his effort ... Not hunting for shots ... Just the complete opposite of a certain guy we had last year ...

I just keep thinking about how he was the missing piece on that 2020-2021 team ... And how if Brad had him all 5 years ... How good would this dude be ...

Special player ... Really enjoy watching him play ...
I wonder if there are any of those "what ifs" going through Guerrier's mind. "What if I had committed to Illinois on day one?" That sort of thing.
