Dain is who he is. He can dominate lesser and similar opponents, but when it comes to the tougher matchups, he disappears.

We absolutely need is 5+ min per game (more with foul issues), but BU has a job to do, and that is putting the best team on the floor and keeping the rotation tight for continuity.

As this was Moretti’s first game back was a good time to see where he is physically and in real game action and how he fit in with the rest of the team.

IMO it didn’t go great. Would have been a much more lopsided victory had Brad not brought him in as it gave Michigan a player to feel confident they could drive by and pressure. We really need good minutes from our 7, 8 and 9 players in which there isn’t a huge momentum shift.

The biggest loss with Shannon may end up being Harmon becoming the 6th man and Goode becoming the 5th and not really having an 8th who can cause havoc and hold leads.

Someone in the pregame thread noted that if Coleman wore his black tights last night, we win. I want to amend that to CoHawk and Harmon. They can't take them off for the remainder of the season.

Harmon's learning to play some Bradball.

Think the answer for the front court is Amani for 5-10 mpg. Will rebound, makes freshmen mistakes on defense but shows pretty good instincts overall, and can space the floor. I think that’s what we need for a backup 4/5 at this point. Hope his back feels better soon.

Absolutely. Every time Ty did anything imperfect last night there were some members of this forum in the game thread who called to bench him. And they're the same people who have ridden him hard all season. It's like they don't realize how much better the team looks when he's out on the floor. When Ty is aggressively driving and looking for cutters, the team's efficiency goes through the roof but some people just see the lack of finish at the rim.

Overall, I think people fail to realize Ty is just a sophomore playing his first year of PG in the B10 and being rather successful doing it. And you can see Ty is clearly learning on the fly and growing almost every game. It’s just crazy to me that some fans will straight overlook the flashes Ty has shown when he puts it together leading to our team going on nuclear runs to put negative instances of his under a microscope.

Ty is a really good player and has been Instrumental to our team's success this season. And I for one can't wait to see what happens with another year of strength and conditioning and experience for him gives him the body to finish at the rim. 15ppg, 8rpg, with a 2:1 A/TO ratio is not out of the question.

Ty Rodgers is my PG of choice.........no doubt at all in my mind..............There really really isn't........................

It's really a shame Amani is dealing with injury right now, as I do think with the way Dain is playing and the way Amani was playing before injury, I do think he'd be getting some decent spot minutes right now just to take a load off our interior defense. It'd be 3-5 minutes a game, but I trust him with those minutes more than Dain at this point.

totally agree. I was excited for Ty's development going into the year, thinking we'd have RayJ or another transfer PG so Ty could continue to improve on the wing.
When I heard we weren't bringing in a transfer guard, and Ty was the plan at PG, I was definitely less than optimistic.

Fast forward to today, and although he is still working on some things, I could not have imagined his transition to PG would have gone as smoothly as it did. Considering the situation, he has absolutely exceeded expectations.

Besides for Ty’s scoring last night I thought that was the best pace he has played at all year. He really pushed the pace, but at the same time didn’t seem sped up once.

I think a lot of fans really underestimate how big experience and growth are for college players. They want guys on the court to like up to their full potential RIGHT NOW and get mad if they don't. Its the same type of thinking that has caused the frustration at Hawkins and its really silly. College is all about development from year to year and its not reasonable to expect a sophomore to play like a senior, even if they are getting a lot of minutes.

I'm worried for Juwan if UM lets him go after the season. Not a very good coach and I don't think he has much of a chance at a boxing career. Maybe a slapping career with carefully chosen opponents and a good promoter. Is Don King still around?

What I've heard is that his grades are not bad enough that he's academically ineligible, but they are bad enough that they have triggered Michigan's own academic probation status for athletes. As to why they have chosen to effectuate his probation in this particular manner, your guess is as good as mine. I'm assuming they wouldn't have done it this way if Dug wasn't their best player.

I'm happy to see there is already a pretty good amount of support for this post. Ty is running the 10th best offense in the nation per AdjO rating. People have also had to stop complaining about his FT shooting, at least to a degree. What do they have left?

Think about how Michigan felt last night knowing they were shooting ~50 percent from the field and ~83 percent from the ft line and made zero errors on offense (unforced turnovers) yet lose by 15 points. I think B1G teams are certainly scouting us, but we have seemed to adapt. Our bully-ballers know the double is coming, they're now being cognizant of it and looking for it to take advantage of it instead of getting stripped.

Our offense is really good.

this is correct but he is also by their rules required to be present for any on campus classes so traveling is out.. If he missed class it is a full probation.

I think Ty has already shown himself to be a less frustrating player than CHawk has been at times.

Ty you can see it all there, he just needs a shot. Coleman has a history of getting sped up and frustrated easily.

Skill development vs maturing.

@Retro62 and I watched the game together last night. Every time Ty drove inside, borderline out of control in my eyes, and launched one up against a taller inside defender I winced. And then, nearly every time, the ball went in. I kept asking "How does he get those flyers to go in?" @Retro62: "Because he's really strong."

Thus endeth the lesson. He had a beautiful coast-to-coast rebound/full-court-drive/power-lay-up early on last night. I love how at the outset of games recently, after disappearing v. Purdue, on one of our initial possessions he'll just drive it to the hole through traffic and score. The taller defenders, inevitably, are all like:

Yeah. It's been off-record reported that Dug's GPA is between 1.8 and 2.0 and 1.8 is the minimum limit for NCAA participation. Now the assumption is that the 2.0GPA minimum might be a Michigan athletic requirement, and maybe it is, but I think it might actually be due to the other NCAA GPA requirement, which is that if you have a GPA under 2.0, you are required to submit an actionable "recovery plan" to get the student above that mark. While most legitimate schools would staple the kid to the study hall desk and accompany them to every single class as part of the recovery plan and bench them for the year, my guess is that Michigan submitted this ridiculous "no travel" recovery plan reminiscent of "grounding your teenager" by saying they can't leave the house until they get their grades up instead.

And yes, Michigan is clearly allowing this to happen because Dug is their best player. I'd also be surprised if Michigan's actual academic standard for athletes wasn't even higher than a min 2.0 GPA, and that they're ignoring it out of convenience. And for the record, Illinois gpa requirements for athletes circa 2001-05 were much higher (I want to say that under a 3.0 was considered "probationary" and under a 2.5 was pretty much clean out your locker). That said, different times with Turner and Guenther in charge.

For sure. I wasn't trying to compare them as players really, just the trajectory and development. When you look at BU and Co. developing prep players who buy in and trust the process....Ayo, Kofi, Trent, CoHawk....and now Ty....the return on investment is through the roof in years 3 and 4. Hell you can even throw Giorgi in there. Dude wasn't even on the list. As noted previously, CoHawk wasn't very high on the list.

This staff is figuring out who fits in this narrative...and when you hear @Indy Illini Fan @illini0440 @DB11Headband and @LvilleILL talk about incoming preps like Jase Butler, you realize what they are doing....and doing very right.

Now that they seem to have a feel for the type of transfers they want to add to the mix, and you know potential transfers are watching what is happening with Domask, QC, and Harmon....we might just be witnessing the greatest decade+ in Illini MBB history.
