Illinois 88, Missouri 63 Postgame

#176
I basically just threw my post out there for discussion and I was just going to read the responses if any but I thought I need to respond to a few things you took issue with.

First, or 1. You don't think winning 2 out of 3 games is dominance? I guess we will just have to agree to disagree over that. I don't think you can just choose a certain number of years and base anything on that. I could have chosen 1997 to 2008 (12 years) Illinois won 9 out of the 12. Even more dominant but it is just a collection of years and does not really mean anything other than what it is.

2. But just think the utter insanity that would ensue if we started playing a better team, like, Kentucky, if we were to pull that off. I think the fact that last night's game was by some estimates 80 per cent Illinois attendance shows however that Missouri fans don't care much anymore. That is, there was no passion from Missouri fans. Shouldn't there be for both?

3. I think the only way it will become a nationally televised game again is if and when Missouri gets good again. And that isn't going to happen for a while. As Rob said, Missouri is in a death spiral. Martin may be gone after this year which will set them back even more as it usually takes a little while for a new coach to get things back.

4. I base my observation about the inability of the Missouri fans to see the game based on a thread in the Tiger board discussing how to see the game if one does not have BTN. So, apparently it was not on the SEC network either? I don't know. But the thread also mentioned that the SEC network was showing the Missouri football game rather than the basketball game.
Guest, Just out of curiosity, have you actually been to one of these games? If not, I don't think you can imagine the lure of it. Even last night, I am guessing that all the posters on here that went had a great time at the game, and this one was an outlier in the crowd ratio. I just don't see any other noncon matchup that has the excitement of this game. It really has to be seen in person. It could also bring dividends for Illinois, as the St Louis talent in years past has offered some great players, and will continue that.

Re: Missouri hate

I grew up in Chicagoland and absolutely despise Miznoz and everything it stands for. I love the rivalry and am crushed when we lose. I want to eviscerate them whenever possible. I was disappointed that we took our foot off the gas yesterday and wished we won by 40.

I have never met someone from that school that I like. Although the sample size is limited. It's the only school, maybe in the world, that I would not let my senior in high school even apply to because of the visceral response I have when I think of Tiger Basketball.

I'm sure there are lovely people from Missouri, I just throw up a little bit in my mouth when I think of their home school.

Regarding the rivalry...I hate Mizzou a lot. Sometimes more than Indiana. Of course, I grew up near St. Louis, and have been living in St. Louis for nearly 22 years...but part of it is the Mizzou fans. They are simply the worst, somehow. I'm not sure I really know how to describe it...or them...or the general "vibe" they give off, but if you spend any amount of time in St. Louis and interact with Mizzou fans...you'll hate them and everything about them.

For example, this post from the tiger board last night:

In short...a Tigerboard poster who has posted over 2000 times posted because he thought it was weird that Trent Frazier was answering questions in the presser using a note card with prepared answers...and needed someone to explain to him that Frazier was reading the post-game stat sheet, and not prepared answers. In general...they're idiots who don't realize they're idiots. Not ALL of them, as I have some close friends who are Mizzou grads...but...trust me. They are the worst.

Also...the key to a fun rivalry game is the fanbases and teams caring about the rivalry. I'm pretty sure Kentucky fans, or Louisville fans, etc. don't really think about Illinois much at all, and wouldn't really get into the rivalry. However...Missouri fans care about this game, and so many Illini fans are based in St. Louis area or the southern/central part of Illinois, that they definitely care. Even though it was by far the smallest Braggin Rights game I've been to, and there were barely any Mizzou fans (which was partly due to the Bowl Game...I mean...Mizzou had their alumni band at the basketball game...and they were not good) there this year...it was a fun atmosphere. And when the games are competitive and the crowds are 50/50...its an amazing environment. This game should go on forever.

I have no ill will toward the people of Missouri. Only their favorite university.
They have some wonderful lakes, float streams and rivers.

I've had some wonderful times with people I just met in quiet cove bars and restaurants at Lake of the Oz and Table Rock Lake.

Pretty sure these people don't follow Mizzou sports. Way too cool.

Yes, I grew up in Southern Illinois. And yes, I would say the hatred is bred into me in part due to where I grew up. Mizzou is my public enemy number 1... most of the time. I still have a nice healthy hate for Iowa, Indiana, Michigan. My dislike of Purdue is less than those three.

Always easy to understand the 'intense dislike' for... Indiana from the Eastern side of Illinois... Iowa and Missouri for the Western side of Illinois... Wisconsin for the Northern Side of Illinois. And Michigan and Michigan State for... everybody in Illinois.

But I've always wondered why there isn't more of a big dislike for Kentucky for Southern Illinoisans. Kentucky has always been a better powerhouse than Mizzou over the years. Southern Illinois has a great ball tradition going for it. Why is Mizzou more of a dislike for Southern Illinois folks than Kentucky? Or does Southern Illinois have more of a respect for them than dislike?

Good to see we are entering 2022 and they still have a message board layout that’s straight out of 1998.

I grew up in S Illinois, went to SIU Carbondale, missed Walt Frazier by one year but saw Dick Garret (drafted 2nd round by Lakers). SIU was never, nor are they now, a BIG caliber basketball school. So, we never competed for the same players as Missouri or Kentucky or Illinois. We knew we were the weak sister in basketball, although we had a glory year with Frazier and some minor success since.
It is hard to conjure up hatred for a school that is in a different league literally and figuratively.
I do remember when Jay Shidler went from Lawrencevill IL HS to Kentucky. We were proud that a S Illinois kid was good enough to play for Kentucky.
Having said that, it was easy to hate Indiana for one obvious reason. Bobby Knight.

I have lived in Paducah , Ky for over 30 years ....it's a good town with lot's to do.....I grew up in McLeansboro Il , 100 miles to the north.......I am old so bear with me .....The only recollection growing up about UK was the 10:30 pm replays of UK games on WPSD-TV channel 6.....back when there were very little daily games being broadcast like nowadays.......it was , for me , a chance to see BB being played ...........Also , the Evansville Aces had games replayed late night's......

The hatred I have for UK has been manifested by the complete arrogance by the UK fans I came in touch with as I worked here ...Not so much now that I'm retired , but to answer your question , my experience is the amount of contact with fans of a particular team fosters and reinforces that hatred......Zero respect for the lying , cheating , racists losers ...............................

I really hate UK now....I mean dislike with every fiber of my body..................Slime-apari has reinforced that immensely since he took over ..
I really hate idiots out walking around because of Satan , Tom Davis...etc
I really hate misery b/c of their stupid fans and am glad they didn't get into the B1G..............
I really hate IU b/c of Booby Knight....
i really hate scUM b/c all Illini fans should hate them .............
The rest of the B1G I have a severe dislike for them....not hatred but close.............

Hell , I dislike or hate all college programs except for my beloved Fighting Illini.............................Yep , I really really do......................

I've described Mizzou fans in the past as being like a bunch of recent lottery winners. When they come into some good fortune, they don't know how to handle it and go out of their way to flaunt it and act like they've always been amazing. Then they can't understand when they fall back to Earth.

No he’s not. I think Hawkins should start at the 5 next year.

I have more faith in Hawkins and BBV at this point.
Do not think Omar can be the starter and we still compete for the BIG championship. Should have an evaluation on Dain by spring and know if we need the portal for a center. Believe there is more of a chance of Lieb being ready than Omar progressing. He just doesn’t seem to have the bb IQ to be effective and there is a limit to being able to coach that. Would love to be wrong but …

His body language (and facial expression) from last night just kills me.

So, having gotten this game out of the way, here is my question. Should we (or rather, the Illini) really continue with the Braggin' Rights game with Missouri? Or should the Illini start looking for a better Braggin' Rights rival (and I don't mean start playing a different team in St. Louis)?
No, but I vote the trophy is replaced. Just feels like an old ISHA trophy-type vibe. Or reminds me of river houses on stilts near the Mississippi, maybe it is metaphoric??? 😉

I say a new trophy is designed every 4 years with the winner of the 4th year KEEPING the trophy forever. Then repeat the cycle.

The best of the portal centers are likely better than Dain. Hopefully we get one. No confidence that he's not another Payne.

I saw that but on the other hand another Missouri fan on the board pointed out to the original poster that Frazier was not using a note card with prepared answers that it was in fact just a stat sheet so he could refer to it to give accurate answers. So it goes both ways. I have seen comments on the Tiger Board critical of BU but then often another Tiger fan will point out how wrong the original poster (much like this board). That's the only other one I remember. But there are, apparently, rational people on Tiger Board, sometimes, maybe, hopefully.

They pretty much universally dislike Underwood. Only recently have a minority started admitting they'd rather have him than Martin.

I'm from Southern Illinois. As far as Ky vs Misery fans - at least Ky says they are good, and then backs it up with their play. Misery fans shout how great they are, have a very average or worse team most years, and still will tell you how good they are. They are absolutely the most obnoxious fans I have ever been around.

Guest, Just out of curiosity, have you actually been to one of these games? If not, I don't think you can imagine the lure of it. Even last night, I am guessing that all the posters on here that went had a great time at the game, and this one was an outlier in the crowd ratio. Nope, never been. But please don't take this the wrong way but I don't see why that should make any difference. I am not a football fan but when I was going to school I went to a game (Indiana) and had a great time. Don't even remember if we won or not. I really enjoyed it but I am still not a football fan and rarely watch football. Too boring.

Last night while I was at once celebrating the victory (don't get me wrong, I am very happy Illinois won) I was also thinking about why we get so excited about this game. What is it about Missouri (I know some of you have personal reasons but try to be little objective)? Is it some kind of natural rivalry or did it become a rivalry because back in 1976 someone thought it would be a good idea to schedule Missouri (or vice versa) and it turned out to be a good thing. It grew into a great rivalry. Both teams were probably fairly even for the first 20 years or so. But there didn't seem to be a desire to create this rivalry prior to 1976. Illinois and Missouri played seven times in a little over 40 years up to 1976 (first game was 1932 which Illinois won by the whopping score 36-24). So if it was merely created we can create another one, hopefully, a better rivalry. I think starting a rivalry with a team that is at least a step up from Missouri would be good thing for the program. I think after 50 or so years maybe it is time to move on. It would take some effort but eventually I believe fans would become as fierce in their support of a different rivalry facing a different team. Everything that people have pointed out here about the attractions of this IL MO rivalry can just as easily be transferred to another rivalry. But, actually, truth be told, I really don't care. I just think it is something to think about considering the rise of Illinois basketball and the decline of Missouri's. I just think Illinois could do better.

And I know I will probably get in trouble here but I don't understand the "hate". I dislike certain teams, certain coaches. Even Bobby Knight, I dislike him immensely but I don't think I hate him. I mean, it's just a sport. It's not that important.
