Illinois 88, NC State 74 POSTGAME

After the first half Tate had he should be benched. TJ is a much better ball handler and I think once he gets a little bit more experience he is going help the offense more too.

Had to scrap it out and we did...need to do the same against VCU..really needed that W

Minutes for the SG and WF looking tough to get this year, should open up more next year. Kipper is also suiting up in 3 weeks, just curious to see him play. He is going to be the 8 ball and going against tougher competition in the Big Ten.

It might.

If we keep that same lineup and rotation we used in the second half tonight, we might really get some chemistry going and reel off some wins.

I dont see Kipper getting a ton of minutes tbh. That being said, we've never seen him play so who knows?

I'll eat my hat if that's a good win at the end of the year, but it'll do for now.

Beat VCU this weekend then you're starting to dig your way out of the hole. We've got the players to do it. Black is figuring it out, Abrams is back, there's no reason for us to suck like we did last week.

They were missing a couple of guys. They might look good at the end of the year. Then again the ACC may eat them alive even if they improve.

I believe Tate started the second half. Didn't play long, though.

Same starting line up as the second half tonight and same sub pattern and we win. And Tate didnt play a minute in the second half and im sorry to say for him, it should stay that way.

Black and Tejon provide some much need athleticism to this team. It will be interesting to see if Nichols can work his way into the rotation with his athleticism as well.

Black isn't even remotely close to Diaw's passing.

Of course not... Just referencing Diaw's game being described as "old man/YMCA basketball". Sorry if I wasn't clear... My bad. There are many versions of old man basketball. They don't all have to pass the same to be in the same group.

NC State has a good amount of talent inside and out, plus they are pretty athletic. But man did they play some stupid basketball at times today.

Good win. It looks like Groce chose to play smaller, quicker guys on Smith and it worked. Abrams, JCL, and Lucas all took turns guarding him. And anyone notice Groce put Finke on Johnson (their guard who couldn't shoot) near the end of the game?

Yay coaching!

Defense was better, but they had ~21 TOs, few of which were forced. 19 just heard. Definitely looked as good as we have. Hope returns for now!:thumb:

TA was very good, lots of sneaky baskets, and Malcolm was Malcolm.

Quick question. I truly believe that NC State will be a damn good team when they get Yertseven and Rowan. If they have a bad loss, we know that the committee takes into consideration who they were missing in their losses. If they end up being a top 25ish team, does the committee consider it as good of a win for Illinois since they were missing those two players? I would imagine that it'd have to work both ways but I don't know.

NCState is flat out bad at the moment, but they get the big man eligible in a couple of weeks, Smith cuts the mistakes in half and they have enough talent to be a decent team. But they won't survive the ACC playing like that anymore than we will survive the B1G playing like we did in the first half.

You're on point though, Black is looking like I had hoped/expected, we really couldn't have asked for any more from Abrams. Improvement from JCL/TJL and Thorne gives us some hope that we may yet get there. Beating VCU would be great, but after last week I would take just showing up and noticeable improvement.

When Rowan is back and Yurtseven becomes eligible and freshman age, they will be better.

Newman beat me to it.

Looked to me like they were in a zone with finke out top, which I thought was pretty smart cause Dorn had shown the ability to shoot over top of it

TA and Hill had some good old man plays tonight...which is what we need all year..our guys have experience let's hope they take advantage of it. That's part of the reason for all the venom after the last 3 L's

DJW was in very briefly, committed a TO and I'm not sure if he came back in.

Thank you Tate for all you have given to Illinois. Be a good teammate and push Lucas hard in practice and cheer and coach on the bench! We will need you at times this season, but Lucas has taken your spot. Nothing wrong with that.

+1

Thank god John Groce finally opened up his laptop at halftime and skimmed some recent Illinois Loyalty threads and kept Tate on the bench for the second half. Great second half by Black and Tracy was great tonight too.

Hopefully he didn't skim everything, because he will stop recruiting anyone else to fill our last 2 because he knows that he wont be here anyway... ;)

Nice to get a win, but still a lot of work to do getting to the B1G season.

Leron, Tracy, and a nice 2nd half by Hill helped turn this game our way.
