In this check-boxing world in which we now live, let's visit what was checked, shall we?
1. Avoided the dreaded Triple D (Double Digit Deficit) check
2. Avoided getting Loyola'd check
3. Avoided getting Augustine'd check
4. Just Orange Crushed them to smithereens check
6. On to Boston check

I don't want to hear how it's hard to win on the road...

If you're any good:

You don't give up 90 to Penn State.

You don't urinate down your leg in the last 3 minutes.

You don't not know how to run an inbounds play.

You don't commit stupid fouls on three point shooters.

I could go on, but I'm going to put as much effort into this post as this team does in its defense.

The more I see of this years team the more I'm reminded of previous years teams in a lot of wrong ways. I will be pleasantly surprised, bordering on shocked, if this team gets to the 2nd round let alone the 2nd weekend.

As others have called out there were a lot of... feelings after Penn State. I readily admit that I was part of that group. Though, as I assume with most everyone else, it was out of frustration as I think we all saw the potential for this team and not necessarily writing the team off.

Anyway, I suppose I should have had a third reaction after "pleasantly surprised" and "shocked"... Effing stoked.

No reason to go out to Boston to play just one game.

Anytime The Beatles are mentioned, I gotta say "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" (Saw them 8/21/1966, Busch Stadium, St. Louis, $5.50 for best seat in the house)

2X2L: one of the oldest living Beatlemaniacs on this here planet we call Earth, state of Illinois, DeKalb sector.

Illinimania. So wonderful to wake up with a silly grin on my face this morning. (So wonderful to wake up, period)

Thanks, Illini. Go.

The problem is a lot of fans expect perfect coaching. There is no such thing. Every coach has bad games and (if they coach long enough) bad years. Coach K, who many consider the GOAT, had a team with 10 McDs AAs not make the dance.

At the start of the season, there are dozens of teams who have Sweet 16 potential. Most teams have fans who "see the potential" in their team. But the vast majority don't reach their potential. The fact is, this team is greater than the sum of its parts. Indiana, Michigan, and OSU on paper have more talent than we do, but it didn't coalesce the ways ours did.

completely disagree with last sentence. other than that, of course coaches make mistakes and have bad games. but the bulk of fan perception depends on the players (more than staff). there's only so much they can contol

It's hard to believe it's been 19 years since the Illini made it this far.

My wife and I got married in May of 2005. (I'll never forget my future father-in-law losing his mind, jumping around the living room during the Arizona game comeback). Since that year:

I've bought and sold 5 houses
Had 5 children
Held 3 different jobs
Owned 8 cars
Started a business

It doesn't seem right that it's been that long.

Side note: Gonzaga has now been to 9 straight sweet sixteens. That's wild to contrast with Illinois just making one for the first time in 19 years.

Bought and sold 7 houses.
Lived in three different states.
Divorced then remarried.
Got masters degree and changed careers.
Had a kid who's now in 4th grade.
Had 8 different jobs.
Owned 10 different cars.

Yeah. Crazy.

Yes, 19 years. Years now only of consisting of... yesterdays. And in the immortal words of Chad & Jeremy... Yesterday’s Gone.

Those 19 years for the Illini are in the record books. Locked away and immutable. Memories within the collective mind and minds of Illini Nation. Memories and images of games and players and times shared that will become more distant and dim a bit as time marches on.

The lesson? The Illini did not have the success that we around-these-here parts wanted them to have. For reasons well documented and opined upon within these hallowed pages.

The other lesson? We have another 19 years just ahead. Fresh and untouched. Futures and legacies to be lived and determined. Some players even that have yet to be born.

It is conceivable that the Illini will struggle in the next 19 years as they did at times in the last 19. A welcome transfusion of fresh Blue Blood has been injected into the veins of the Illini roundball program that should provide ongoing and sustainable success as we have enjoyed in the past season.

Players will change. Coaches will change. There will be years of great success and years that are more challenged.

But our faith in this program and the joy we feel right now has been restored and reignited. Orange shines brighter from the prairies of Illini and illuminating out to all corners of our World.

There will be countless practices. There will the constant drumbeat of ball against floor. Of shots tickling the twine and clanging off the rim. In other words... the soundtrack of any roundballer’s life. Lots of smiles and hugging. Lots of frustration and arms waving. But a great sense of purpose and direction.

And we will be here -- Illini Nation. We in all our generations and places of life. In big cities and small towns and on hard-working farmland. All united in our love for all things Illini Basketball.

Let’s all enjoy the next 19 years with the great joy and success we feel today. And with so many shiny things to put in trophy cases that they’ll have to build a new wing to house them all.
