Illinois 90, Rutgers 68 Postgame

#102
Illinois scored 1.23 PPP today, which is their third best effort of the conference season (1.36 @PSU, 1.27 @Minnesota), and Rutgers worst defensive effort of the conference season.

Rutgers scored 0.93 PPP today, which is effectively Illinois' average defensive effort, and Rutgers' 6th worst offensive game.

Just for fun, here is the combined PPP standings, including all BTT games so far:

Disagree. I think Shaq was a better runner.
Shaq is a good comp for Kofi, but Shaq was definitely better, IMO.
I would bet my life on Kofi in a foot race. But Shaq was 2 in taller and 40 LB. heavier....and likely considerable stronger for at least half of his career. Kofi plays against more and better athletes than Shaq did in college days as well as more players of his height. I would say their skill sets are similar, but Shaq definitely had a power advantage. Would be great to see the two go one on one in their college days.

It will be of great interest to see how Kofi is developed as an NBA player.

Shaq was much more polished, but it’s not an unfair comparison. Shaq wasn’t afraid to put the ball on the floor, and was a more willing passer. He was also one of the most dominant players of all time...
There just aren’t very many guys that big that can move.
It’s sooo much fun to have that advantage in the post. It really doesn’t matter who we play. They have to adjust for Kofi. Not the other way around.

I will say again, I wish Shaq would reach out this off season.

If Curbelo was going to have a tough night, this was the night to have it. First BTT game, first time with fans...I'm ok with it. Get it over with now 'cause we're gonna need the best 6th man in the B1G this weekend.

The bench was serviceable, but shortened so it's gonna have to come up big in the next couple weeks.
A poor foul after a bad TO on a forced behind the back pass then a ticky tack foul and his first half was over. Hopefully that was a good learning experience for Belo.

Has there ever been a player like him on any team....ever? Shaq matched Kofi's size and strength and was even a tad bigger, , but Shaq did not run like Kofi. He did, however, shoot free throws like him.
Wrong. I love kofi, but young Shaq would lead the break sometime. YouTube is your friend here.

These kids are so talented, and Underwood + staff direct them so well. Perfect storm. I believe we can win a natty. I hope we do. I told my son to make sure he pays attention, as it may be some time before he sees an Illini team this good again.

PS When my son was born in '06, I had every expectation that Illinois had arrrived, coming off that '05 performance. I'm older and wiser now. whew, lad.
and now your lad can drive !

Psyched for the games this weekend! GO ILLINI!
Glad to see fans there. My thought going in was that we improved quite a bit since the 1st Rutgers game. CONFIRMED!

I was surprised to see Trent only had 8 points when looking at box score this morning. Seemed like he was making a key bucket left and right.

Bad night for Curbelo all the way around. Seemed to be pressing in second half to make something after barely playing in first half. Hopefully that was in large part because of the stage and finally having fans. He cleans that up and Illini stop opponents getting to the rim, and should see two more wins.

I think Curbelo had an average game. 7 points, 2 rebounds and an assist is not bad for a bench player. It wasnt what he has been doing, but I'm not concerned. He wasn't needed.

CJ Walker was pretty amped to guard him also. They were a good match for each other.

This is such great experience for him. He's got a target on his back now and opponents are amped to D him up. This will only make him better.

Want Belo to get in the flow before trying the behind the back pass. Love it, just not in his first 90 seconds.

Shortened bench: is that why we didn't see CoHawk?

Wow, we really looked strong out there yesterday. This team has really improved so much from the early season version.

I love the roles Grandison and Williams play on this team. Seeing Grandison’s overall growth throughout the season and Williams ability to hit the three at 55% has been a nice surprise.
