Illinois 91, Marshall 74 POSTGAME

He’s playing good D and rebounding. Still a valuable piece even if not scoring. Just has to stop playing hero ball and play within the offense.

You are correct to be worried. The large-bodied Big Ten teams will be a problem for us. If the two new bigs (Ebo and Vesel) on the bench are not able to contribute by the meat of the Big Ten schedule, the Illini will be in trouble. I will be happy if only one of them is helping.

Ebo will contribute.

He is still getting used to the offense, trying to flow with it. Playing great defense and had 4 assists. Love to see him shoot more, but think his lack of scoring has left a void that AJ is picking up. I said long time ago, I think we will have 8 man rotation and 5 guys avg dbl digit scoring. Balance and defense, we will be successful, growing every game. Our test is coming soon.;):illinois:

So you think one of AJ, Kipper, Da'Monte or Frazier won't be in the rotation? Interesting view....I think we'll come closer to a 10 man rotation than an eight man rotation.

Pretty easy to see 10 as of now with the improvements of individual play across the board.

Finke
Black
Smith
Jordan
Lucas
Alstork
Williams
Frazier
Nichols
Greg

Hmmm, so we consider Greg E. as part of the rotation? I haven't been able to actually want much this year, but I wouldn't really count him as part of the rotation. Maybe I am wrong. Yes?

It's more a necessity.

He would be the 10th in a 10 man rotation, which by all accounts with the talent and improvements, I would say BU would ultimately lean too for PT options.

He’s the last guy for sure, but he is going to see that 2-3 minutes before half a lot this year and be there to help mop some minutes with foul trouble.

"Hero ball"! You can't be serious. So far he has lacked aggressiveness on offense. He's been very tentative.

When he’s tried to create something, it’s been out of the flow of the offense.

I think you can break it down to:

2 of: Smith, Frazier, TJL
1 of: Damonte, Jordan, Alstork
1 of: Nichols, Black
1 of: Black, Finke

I don't really think that rotation will change much throughout the season. The distribution of minutes may however. You may see Damonte make the jump to the first group because of his ball skills but I think its more likely he stays in the group I put him in. 9 deep is actually pretty good. In a perfect world two of TJL/Frazier/Damonte/Jordan/Alstork would separate themselves from the rest to give a better starting 5.

Smith had 13pts last night and should've had (2) 20pt back to back showings but didn't finish at the hoop last night...

Alstork and TJL I continue to give them the benefit of the doubt but I just don't think they are outplaying Williams/Frazier/AJ....

I look for a line-up stack up soon I know Abrams and Tate were injured and they needed a PG but TJL is having some moments but he's a good defender...

Illinois’ biggest lead of the game was 23 points. But when the play got a bit sloppy and lazy late, Underwood cranked up his vocal chords and started yelling again.

“You don’t want to know what he said,” Nichols said. “It might make you sad. He had a few choice words for us.”

lol

Good to hear - the days of 'good enough' are well behind us. These guys learned some bad habits that will take a while to undo.

That being said, lets not get too high yet. Our opponents combined record so far is 4-12....

Greg E is going to play. Just like against DePaul, our bigs will get in foul trouble and he will have to play. Especially in the Big Ten.

Watch the highlight film and count the dimes by Alstork. Even if not scoring, he still contributed at a strong level last night.

who do you see falling out of the rotation, barring injury of course? Seems like nine guys are contributing. Starting five plus Kipper, Williams, Jordan and Frazier.

Yeah, have to temper the enthusiasm a bit. For our parched fanbase, Underwood looks like a maestro and total boss. Getting a strong feeling that he would win with either squad. Am confident that Underwood (and company) will move us up the food chain. Probably way up.

Absolutely. That's why I'm hoping he gets more tick the next few games. No substitute for game experience. Really hoping he is able to provide a decent level of play (at least defensively & rebounding) in his spot minutes in conference play.

Alstork is doing just fine. He's not putting up flashy numbers in the scoring column, but his defense has been outstanding and his court vision is currently in the running for the best on the team. See that nifty pass to Leron that set up the dunk that I thought was going to break the hoop. And that's just one of his impressive assists.

"Really impressed by Damonte and his ability to impact the game by doing the small things right."

Once again Damonte is the Javy Baez of the team, does many of the small things well or right. Some say he has a "nose" for the ball. Well actually he has speed, quick leaping ability, reaction times, anticipation, and excellent position. He just isn't the offensive star, but looking forward to seeing him flourish in this system and years to come.

On another issue, would love to see Ebo and Matic give us more time at the PF/C position next year. Kipper needs a chance to play his true position which is a SF. He might actually need to get small to improve speed, but that is where he projects professionally.

I am not concerned about Alstork in the least. I think scoring expectations were placed in the Ray Rice category. The biggest difference between he and Ray is the supporting cast and the fact it is Mark's first year. He is doing fine and the good news is that AJ Mark Smith Trent, Damonte, are all contributing a lot.

He will be fine!
