INDIANAPOLIS — No. 3 Illinois accomplished one major goal. The next one will be even more difficult.
As the Fighting Illini celebrated their first Big Ten Tournament title since 2005 with a 91-88 overtime victory over No. 9 Ohio State on Sunday, they quickly turned the focus to their No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and the opportunity it presents.
“It was crazy, thinking about all the things we’ve accomplished and knowing how I came on my visit with coach (Brad) Underwood and I told him these are the things we can accomplish,” Ayo Dosunmu said after being named the tourney’s most outstanding player. “So to get up there, cut that net down and see that No. 1 seed come up there, it’s just an unreal feeling.”
“It’s time to make history,” Dosunmu said. “It’s time to dig deeper, to focus in a little more, but winning this Big Ten championship is great.

INDIANAPOLIS — Players on the Illinois basketball team still were cutting down the nets after a thrilling overtime victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament title game when the bracket was revealed for the NCAA Tournament.
Led by All-American candidates Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn, the Fighting Illini earned the third No. 1 seed in school history and their first since 2005, when a team led by Deron Williams and Luther Head romped through March before they finally lost to North Carolina in the national championship game in St. Louis.
“Call me old school,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood, “but I think there’s nothing better than hearing your name and see it come across the screen. It’s awesome and to see it up there” — on the Lucas Oil Stadium video boards — "after such a hard-fought game was really special. What a great moment; what a great feeling.”
