Illinois 91, Rutgers 60 POSTGAME

Rich McBride was the best defender on the team by the time he was senior. Give MS some time to catch up to the speed of the game, he will be great for us.

And what does this tell us about that era and team for the ILLINI?

THIS ! It really seems Mark has problems with peripheral vision and can only focus on one thing at a time. That then causes him to get burned on one side or the other. Not sure what the solution is if it is indeed the issue.
Couple games ago, I remember him guarding a man in the corner. When his man broke behind him toward the basket, Mark first rotated out toward his man, and thus essentially had to do a 270 degree turn before racing his man back to the basket. Even someone really quick isn't going to win that race. In that situation, shouldn't he just be sliding laterally toward the basket, and then, if necessary turning inwardly so its only a 90 degree turn? If that is the correct way its supposed to be done (I'm no expert), it seems like a pretty easy fix (at least for that one situation).

Chester Frazier was on that team, that's not possible. Would also say that Pruitt and Randle were better defenders as well. At this point I am just hoping Smith ends up average (not a liability) defensively by the time he's an upperclassman.

Defensive basketball 101 starting in elementary school and up needs to be reviewed by those who get beat to the basket - stay between the person your guarding and the basket.

I remember Rich McBride being a much better defender than I thought he would be after seeing him high school.

I stated he would be alright as well...just not the bill of sale, and I wasn't one that thought the FOY was even/should even a conversation.

Good ball player, lack of experience, overwhelmed so far. Good career, not what everyone 9 months ago would have thought though.

I was not everyone 9 months ago. Foolish dreams meet reality. I still trust Underwood over the yea or nay posters of the in'ernet.

Still in awe of Frazier. 5 three pointers in 4 minutes. Stretching a tight 3 point lead to 18 in that span.

The kind of confidence BU has in him, in this system, he is going to be a full blown star in a couple of years. Unstoppable. :illinois:

The “no fear” approach to the game is why TF has been so successful thus far. Would love to see MS and DMW to just say f-it for a few games and play like this. Who knows if they could turn a corner but playing passive ain’t working so far.... then maybe we don’t have to play 2 on 5 on the offensive end.

Trent has been nothing short of amazing. Nothing he does surprises me. While I was ecstatic when Mark Smith committed, everyone was talking about how they couldn't wait to see all of our other recruits, I felt like Trent was being overlooked. I believe that he is going to be a star player in a very short time and I just cant even imagine having 3 more years of watching him play.

Before MS committed, this board was all aboard the Frazier hype train. Well those who weren't already three stations ahead riding the Keatts hype train.
