The NBA is a very specific and somewhat quirky brand of basketball, in which Domask's tremendous feel and timing in a crowd of bodies is pretty much irrelevant.

Which is to say, it's not always a question of not being good enough, it's a question of being good at the right things and Domask isn't.

Ray J came and Ty did not start at PG?
Or he stole time from Marcus and Marcus did not develop with the ball in his hands?
Or if TSJ got to play every game and wore out down the stretch from exhaustion like Trent did?
Or if everyone got their wish and we played with a traditional point guard?
Or if we gave up on Luke like so many wanted Brad to do?

Suffering loss is woven into the fabric of life. It is something everyone faces many times along our personal journey. And it never gets easy. And truth be told... some parts of who and what we lose we never get over.

But go on we must and we do. We carry on because to live is to have hope... and all of Life itself would just end if we quit and gave up.

Sports is of course a much lesser diversion from the serious matters of living. But in a sense, sports IS serious in that when we lose in sports... we are reminded of when and how we lost someone important or something big in our lives. That treasured person. That opportunity we missed or that passed us by. Or a bad decision we may have made that caused us to lose something significant. Or something else that still stings us.

The sting of that pain of loss is reignited when ‘Our Team’ loses and we recoil at that hurtful feeling. And when we win at sports... that is like a healing balm to our body and spirit and we feel restored and re-energized. And ready to take on life again with greater spirit and be ready for its challenges.

Sports – like Life – is nothing without the meaning we bring to it. We decide who and what is important to us. We decide who and what we love and care about. And likewise... we who follow sports make a personal connection to some team and some sport because we crave that connection and meaning and having brother-and-sisterhood with like-minded people that we can on some level bond with. So for these and other reasons... sports can be serious to us and add much to our enjoyment of life.

To everyone who suffers loss of any kind in Life now and in the future... know that you are not alone and all of us humans share that pain and will do so more than just once or twice. But then we refuse to let that loss define us or stop us from living and we find strength inside ourselves we did not know we had. And that strength allows us to bring joy back into our lives and to those around us.

Sports is a mirror to Life. And it is we who cause that reflection to appear in the glass.
