Illinois 94, UT Rio Grande Valley 85 Postgame

The silver lining is that the new guys got valuable playing time, especially coming down to the wire. That will be really helpful in big ten play.

I've been away and just looked at the game when there were 2 minutes to go. I know Trent is hurt and Curbelo is battling concussion issues - where was Granderson?

Oh, and Plummer can stay.

94 points isn't shabby, but giving up 85 to this JV team is abysmal.

What I learned ...

1. Thank goodness for Plummer, but right now he's a liability on D right now. Can't take him out in this game b/c ...
2. Our PG depth will be a concern moving forward ... if we have nights with no Trent and no AC. Hopefully, there will not be many of those.
3. Goode needs more PT. Period.
4. I'm not worried about Hutch. Think about how long he's been out and where he's come from. He needs some confidence and some time getting used to the big lights. But if the trend continues, see #3.
5. I don't ever, ever want to see BBV close out on a 3 pt shoot again.
6. Payne will be surpassed by Lieb by the end of the year. There's a reason we're sniffing around Baylor's discount bin.
7. This game is a good thing. To win with pretty much your entire backcourt out and with a bunch of first timers out there. Huge moving forward.
8. Kofi, dude, way to put this in the W column for us.

Nice to see Luke Goode. He is going to provide some good minutes for us this year and beyond.
Austin H looked out of it tonight. He couldn't stay in front of his man all night. Not that many could.
Hawkins is settling in. Starting to let the game come to him and not push it.

Okay so far this is how I see it, we aren’t very good. You can say it’s only 6 games into the season but this team can’t defend, at all. Our defensive strategy isn’t fit for this roster. It reminds me of Ayos freshman year, we gave up so many shots at the rim I wanted to puke. Now we are back to that, and you know what cures bad defense? A zone. The problem is that underwood probably associates that with a lack of effort and hustle, which may be the case right now, or a lack of confidence. You do what it takes to win basketball games but this is just pathetic. Kofi returned for this? He switched up his game plan once before, why can’t he change it again?
