Still mad about penn state
Nico was going to be a solid contributer at pg all year if not for the injury. It's almost like the John Paddock scenario where the offense just runs smoother and looks more in sync when he's running point. No he's not as athletic or maybe the scoring threat we would like and is a defensive liability at times but he is solid and uses pace better than anyone else we have. I see what Brad has said about him that the the offensive flow is better when he in on the floor.I'm as happy for Nico as the next guy, but you have to give most of the credit to the other four players on the court, IMO. And that four changed back and forth a little.
It's not like Nico was fighting off double teams or heck even being guarded that closely. Glad we have him but tap the brakes a little.
Shannon pretty much shut Perkins down in the second half.Cohawk wow and TJs defense in the second half was absolutely elite in every damn sense of that word.
View attachment 31437I think there exists a universe where that lineup can certainly work as an alternative to booty ball…and everything bogging down at times…I love Domask. But he’s like the overworked plow-horse. I’d sub more liberally overall. Get Marcus a blow and get him back in there.
To answer your question
Nico
Harmon
Shannon
Ty Rodgers
Coleman Hawkins
You could sub Marcus back in for Nico, Harmon, or Ty…most likely. I dunno? It would depend on circumstances.
If Harmon is having a crummy game…next outing…Marcus goes back in for him. Nothing says we can’t rotate starters relative to our opponent. Boooty ball can certainly be a sec
ond unit type thing….similar to what we did successfully with Curbelo for a time.
Nico, Domask, Shannon, Ty, and Coleman on the floor at the same time sounds damn interesting too.
Well we haven't got anybody who has shown that they can stay in front of quicker athletic gaurds on a regular basis. Moretti might as well get some more minutes since he at least can run the offense.i would be surprised if Moretti logged 20 minutes a game moving forward. I like his skill set, but his ability to stay in front of quicker, smaller guards would be an issue and bigger guards would take him to the woodshed. If you factor in the constant switching on defense, he would be a real liability on defense. It would be the same thing you see from Dainja.
Not to mention when he dunks the ballI'd pay money to watch Chester Frazier and Justin Harmon have a stare-down competition. My goodness that young man is instense in his demeanor.
I see your point, but a good portion of our other starters aren’t exactly setting the world on fire defensively either.i would be surprised if Moretti logged 20 minutes a game moving forward. Great bounce passes too !MASSIVE WIN.
Shoutout to Nico, he was awesome. Great bounce back from Coleman.
We saw a glimpse of the future from Amani Hansberry, he completed outplayed the B10 FOY
Yep, we needed that a lot more than his offense in this game and we got it.Shannon pretty much shut Perkins down in the second half.
This is his 5th school in 5 years, he flipped to us from his hometown Purdue at the last minute, and he's playing less than he thinks he's worthy of.So do you expect to see DGL in the portal after the season?
Nico must’ve been sitting closer to Brad when he threw the bench inDidn’t see DGL, coach’s decision?
I do think Underwood does need to get minutes for those who can make some contribution, if for no other reason than to give the top 8 a little rest. Where court time is concerned, I’m always going to rely on the judgment of those that see these guys in practice every day. There’s nothing easier in this world than second guessing.I see your point, but a good portion of our other starters aren’t exactly setting the world on fire defensively either.
You redefine . . .Question is: what does bu do?
Bench Ty to relieve the other positions besides PG? Stronger bench.
Start Moretti? Illinois do need a true PG who can shoot the 3.
Sub Hansberry and DD more? I believe so, if DD can just finish around the basket from .5 feet away.
Limit Domask's offensive output? He was non-existent in the 2nd half. Good to have as a threat anyway.
I typed before not to give up on Goode, but maybe with Moretti's play and other subs being adequate, maybe his playing time should be limited. Then MAC school next year, if he chooses.
Yeah, don’t get me wrong … my wife had to walk me off the ledge in the first half, and I was about done hoping for much of anything from this squad. Today reignited my hope … I’m certainly not penciling this team into my bracket’s Sweet Sixteen if I’m not an Illini fan.I mean today wasn't exactly a "we're fine, everything's great" performance either, but at least we saw some interesting new possibilities.
I think the switching could work, but this team just doesn't communicate well enough to make it happen. So many blown switches. And then they go under screens and still get torched on dribble drives. It's a lot more enjoyable to see us not switching 15 times per possession. I get why we started doing it because we have so many versatile pieces but I've always felt constant switching is just lazy defense.
Glad to see some bite in our defense towards the end of the game.
It was immediately after on the sidelines. It sounds like later he was very complimentaryWhat interview did you see?
Wait, she let you walk off it?Yeah, don’t get me wrong … my wife had to walk me off the ledge in the first half, and I was about done hoping for much of anything from this squad. That's the 22nd best offense in the country that we just beat . . . . Can we do better? . . .. Yup! But that's a W!Let's just fix what we need to fix which is the defense. The seed will take care of itself. Besides, it doesn't matter if we're a #1, #3, #4, #5, etc...whoever we draw will send us out early if we keep playing defense like this.
