Before today, I had been thinking we have only seen the bigs in the pinch post. It’s basically just an offensive switch by either cutter to take over the pinch post. Truly positionless because the original pinch post has to finish the cut and then becomes a perimeter guy.

Never before this season with this coach have I heard or saw the term "Pinch Post". Al McGuire and Billy Packer never used it.

Before today, I had been thinking we have only seen the bigs in the pinch post. Was gonna post about it in the pregame thread. Today, we “pushed” for the first time and got some guards in there. The second cutter a couple possessions in a row pushed the big out of the HP. The original high post guy became the new cutter 2, and the original cutter 2 became the new high post guy.

It’s basically just an offensive switch by either cutter to take over the pinch post. Truly positionless because the original pinch post has to finish the cut and then becomes a perimeter guy. A great way to confuse a defense or move a weak defender to a position they’re not comfortable in.

I was thinking when BU wants to "scheme", that he wants everyone to understand all the "positions" of the offense in able to create different matchup advantages. Also, when he talks about Lucas still finding his way in the offense that maybe that's a big hurdle for the team.... and to be fair to Lucas, that he (BU) has put a lot on his plate.

The first time I heard it was from Tex Winter in a video about triangle offense concepts. I’ll often use it interchangeably with the term high post, but I think technically it’s the high post on the weak/open side of the floor. NBA teams isolate from that spot all the time.

FiveStar, how seamless is the transition from BU's offense to what most NBA teams are running? Can BU tell recruits that his system will directly prepare them for pro ball, and all the hard work they put in now will continue to pay dividends in the future?

I’m gonna say that is a little beyond me. I know spread pretty well, but I don’t know about nba concepts enough to say. I’ve seen and heard nba teams iso at the high post because it’s hard to bring help in that area if you space properly. nba doesn’t allow helpside defense to sit in the paint so teams have to show their hand early in terms of overhelping or underhelping on defense.

For those of you that watched the game and saw the injury, Augustana standout forward Pierson Wofford (Springfield native who played his high school ball at Lutheran High) tore his ACL in last night's game and will miss the remainder of the season. He was averaging 14.7 points per game going into last night's game.

These D3 athletes play for little more than the love of the game. They put in all the time training and practicing and don't get any scholarship benefit. Then when injured, they do not have the same support as a D1 athlete during rehab from their injury. Not sure what year he was in school, but I hope for his quick recovery and that the Illinois game won't be his last college basketball game.

Wofford is a junior so he's still got another year to play.

I can kind of answer that question. There isn't really a lot of overlap in terms of the sets. In general NBA favors a lot of ball screens with other screening actions happening on the weak side at the same time.

Considering Curly Neal retired from the Globetrotters about 15 years before Finke was born, Mike probably had no idea who he was.

It was a good one liner by Underwood.

Not an expert on the spread, but the main thing is that there seems to be constant motion, and alot of passing. The pinch post looks like an awesome thing to use with any personnel, Mark Smith is making great cuts to the basket, living on ft line. I know the level of competition is not great, but the guys are getting better, defense is much better than last year. Glad Ebo and Vessel got PT, they both look really tentative, hopefully we can see them on floor more.

Overall we have improved alot seems to me from Tennessee-Martin game. Finke looking better and better, Alstork got more involved, Black and Lucas still trying to be consistent. Much better than last year, we show heart and desire, and Coach is ready to make corrections on the spot. We are moving in the right direction.;):illinois:

totally agree...seeing more hustle on defense than happened in many years ...also the chemistry on the team is off the charts.

We now have a COACH that instills hard work and effort for the full 40 minutes and I am more excited as each game goes by...seeing improvement in all areas of the game . coach has said we are scratching the surface of how good we can be and he definitely has the players back regarding his comments in the post game pressers...

Very excited to be a fan of the Illini for over 60 yrs now

I just read that Augustana's best player, Wofford, blew out his knee (ACL) against us Wednesday. Sad...

Oh geez... that stinks! That kid's been through a lot since he's been there. He's a former student of mine from his days at Lutheran High in Springfield. Good kid; great player.

Hope he comes back stronger!
