Illinois 96, Augustana 62 POSTGAME

What a roster! Starting Meachum and Chester, and then a bench of Keller, Legion, Jeff Jordan and Calvin Brock. And that was 4 years after a National Championship appearance. What a decline!

Yeah, I remember they couldn't ever seem to handle Taylor Battle back then. However the thrashing they gave Purdue that year was thoroughly enjoyable and they still finished 3rd in the BIG, 23-8 and ranked. Went 1-1 in the BIG tourney and got bounced in round 1 by Western Kentucky, but that team sure seems elite compared to the play Illini fans have endured since BP3 and D.J.R. left town. And yes, the NC appearance was definitely not capitalized on, no doubt about it.

At first glance that starting roster of Mike Davis, Tisdale, McCamey, Meachum and Chester Frazier seems pretty weak.....hard to believe that team was ranked in the top 20 at the time they scored 33 points in a game.

Comparing that roster to our current starting lineup, I think the starting 5s are pretty equal.

Davis / Black - Good rebounders (Davis better), capable scorers (Black better)....even

Tisdale / Finke - Both outside threats, not great defensively...personally I like Finke better.....but fairly even

Frazier / Tejon - Scrappy points, defensive minded....fairly even.

Meachum / Alstork - Meachum better shooter, Alstork better passer, rebounder....fairly even.

McCamey / Smith - McCamey was great, under-rated....Smith by mid-season might be in the same league.....if he can start hitting 3's he is there. Edge McCamey for sure right now.

Bench is not close, our current bench that plays a lot is much much better.

So overall, I think the teams are pretty even.....this team is more talented, that team had players that were more one-dimensional but good at their roles.....so can we be a top 25 team.....I think probably not this year but I think next year we are top 20 for sure.

Thoughts?

that team.... once Frazier got injured, they lost their fighting edge and is the team that tilted the scales on Weber for me, so I give the nod for this team because of Underwood.
