Illinois 97, Missouri 73 Postgame

I would love to see that Purdue game make everyone reassess their national POY predictions.

For sure. Purdue is a heavy-weight team that deserves their #1 ranking. Gonna take a special effort to take them down, especially on the road.

TSJ is already in the handful of top all-time players I've seen for the Illini, and that's saying something. Trying to savor every game --you don't get many teams that have the talent and mentality to go deep in the post season, and these guys do. I'm expecting some adversity somewhere in the season, so trying not to get too high with the blow-out. Still, it's awfully sweet as a fan to see basketball played that well.

Indeed!

I was actually more impressed by Harmon's reaction (as a bench player).

Ty = Wow, what a player, how can you not love being his teammate. Shannon, Hawk,Q are awesome too, but Ty is the dude I want in my bunker with me!

Something I commented to my friend last night is that his handles look so much tighter and more comfortable compared to early in the year. He's doing a lot more probing of the defense and creating space when pressured.

Also as a team had only 10 turnovers for game. Are we still worried about being able to handle a press?

We could’ve went 0-31 from the free throw line & still won this game. Just a complete beatdown.

This team seems to play best when it is driving the ball and getting to the line a lot. Also helps free up shooters for kick-out passes for open 3FG attempts and takes advantage of some of our best player's (e.g., TJ, Marcus) core competencies (finishing around the basket).

Seems to be an area of focus for the staff and team as well, as the last three games are our highest three games of the season in terms of KenPom free throw rate (FTA/FGA) (other than the Kansas exhibition, when we did a great job of driving the ball and there were no foul-outs allowed). Let's keep it going...

This is a great observation. That first half, the defense had Miznoz totally & completely shut down, which is why they just started chucking so many 3s. One of the more impressive halves of defense I've seen in a while.
1-17 from 3 in first half will make all teams looks good defensively.

Combination of a lower preseason rating than most other systems, and a slow start. However, it's trending up:

According to Game Score, the Illini have had 6 A-level performances this season, all in the past 7 games. Two B-level games (Eastern Illinois, @Tennessee), two C-level games (Marquette, Oakland), and one F-level game (Valpo, which they trailed by 9 at the half but still won). Continue playing like they have the past 7 games, and pick up the defensive intensity against the high level teams (aside from Rutgers, that was dominance on both ends), and the sky's the limit.
Where is FAU and Kansas in that model? Both have looked way worse than us

Not according to coach. Offensive efficiency against press is 1.7. 1.0 is average. He then said this is probably something I should mention.

Domask needs to forget where he is when he is shooting 3s, and just shoot.

Hawkins only took one 3 that he shouldn't have. I don't mind him missing a good 3. Well maybe if he has been missing them all night and won't quit.

The game Underwood is playing is not well suited for Dain. He doesn't fit well. Don't be fooled, if Dain goes somewhere that is set up for his style, he will score a lot of points and get a lot of rebounds.

If you sort the Torvik data from 11/19 (one day after the Valpo win) until present, we’re #3 in the country behind Houston and Zona. Same goes for just the month of December

Let's not forget we need to take care of business against a NW team first. I am sure Mr. Shannon will not take lightly comments by an opposing player about who the 2 best players in the BIG are. Will he lay a 40 spot on NW? I am pretty sure I know who TSJ will ask to guard.

That second half was the best thing to happen to BU. He has material that he can stress that he's not happy with. Press clippings won't be an issue. The defense was shaky, as was the ball handling. Fantastic win, but still want to see the boys put two complete halves together. There's not a team in the country that would have hung with us in the first half. Not one.

Was at the game, and Armani was bouncing around and happy, before and after the game. Kid is going to score ALOT of points for us and is absolutely going to put some bruises on a lot of opposing players. Absolutely goes full throttle on rebounds and is alway hustling down court.

I was never sold on Ty at PG but I feel more comfortable after tonight.

Talk about pick your poison. Clog the lane on TSJs drive and QG is going to abuse you from the corner. Sprinkle in some MD man handling guards and CH who can do just about everything and this is brewing up to be a special year

CH hates Mizzou as much as the rest of us and it showed haha.

Admittedly, I don't understand how KenPom works. Was it the margin of victory that pushed us that high? A tier 2 win? Or yes to both? That's a huge jump after one game.
To keep it simple: You move up and down in KenPom based on your offensive and defensive efficiency in each game compared to your expected offensive and defensive efficiency in that particular game.

IE: Based on how good Missouri’s offense and defense is, X is the expected outcome of the game. We played better than X, hence our overall efficiency improves and we move up.

What went up the most in this game was our offensive efficiency from #30 to #20 (defensive efficiency moved up 1 spot).

One thing to keep in mind is that the rating system is not linear. Those teams in the 10-20 range all have a very similar efficiency rating. We moved up in efficiency by 1.3, which is great for a single game, but Houston, for example, who’s #1 in KenPom, is ahead of Arizona (#2) by more than 1.3. So this game jumped us 8 spots, but it would not have taken us from 1-2.

Houston, #1, is currently ahead of us in efficiency by +7. We’re +7 the 40th ranked team. So team 40, is closer to team 8, than team 8 is to team 1.
