Illinois 98, Nebraska 87 Postgame

I couldn't watch the game. I had to attend a play this afternoon. Downtown. 30-min drive both ways. It had three acts, lasted 3:30, had two intermissions, and was, to put it as mildly and politely as possible, soft-core Marxist porn masquerading as TRUTH. Sometimes a man's gotta do...

[An aside: for the Illini ladies who post here, please remind your husbands to kneel in heartfelt thanks for your affinity for college ball. And then give you a foot rub Jules Winfield stylz]

Anyway, I can't watch the replay yet and saw only the final score (and word of TSJ's 40-spot) without reading any of the post game thread. Awesome, decisive victory. Since we obviously must have clicked on all 12 cylinders for 40 mins I'm going to treat myself, sit back with two fingers of bourbon, and leisurely enjoy what I'm confident was a uniquely positive, uplifting game thread with nary a disparagement of any aspect of our hallowed program. I need it after the afternoon I've had.

During Big 10 Tournament week????

My deepest sympathies :) :)

I worry about fatigue for Shannon on the effort he put in today on both ends. Hope the others can show that kind of all, out effort today.

Love the Justin Fields take here. That trade was straight up robbery. Ryan Poles is just a baffling GM. He fleeces Carolina and pulls off a nice trade for Keenan Allen but then allows the Steelers to fleece him not once with Claypool but now twice. What is Poles thinking?

TSJ is just a cold blooded assassin and I say that as a major compliment. The guy just attacks...attacks...attacks. Other than Ayo from recent years, we haven't had someone like that since Brandon Paul and then Dee/Deron before that. If TSJ is making his 3's, then he can't be stopped and this team can will themselves back into games.

The defense was historically bad in the 1st half but did buckle down in the 2nd half, showing those glimpses of what they can be defensively if they put more focus and attention into their assignments

We don't talk enough about Shannon's defense. He's better than good. He's no prima donna, whatsoever. He digs it in on that end of the floor with consistent toughness. He anticipates the game, leaves his man when appropriate to double an open man and often blocks their shot. He didn't just score 40 pts, he also held the Japanese sharpshooter to 2-of-9 on threes. He's a load on both ends of the floor. It's a testament to his character.

Fred’s comments about fatigue came off as a bit of excuse making.
I think it was pretty obvious they were gassed in the second half. Pretty valid excuse, and a credit to the depth and conditioning of our team. Doing what TJ did on both ends of the floor for 40 minutes takes a prodigious level of fitness. Watch Tominaga off the ball in the tourney. That dude does not stand still.

TSJ with a great day! But other performances that come to mind, and players who could dominate a game, include: Adrian Dantley (very strong) 46 points vs UCLA to snap 88 game win streak), Rick Mount who was best pure shooter I ever saw (61 points vs Iowa), and David Thompson who (at 6' 4") could out jump Bill Walton who was 7 to 8 inches taller (57 points). All of these before there was a 3 point line.
Point is well taken but (sorry to be a Karen), AD was 3rd high scorer (9) behind John Shumate (24) and Gary Brokaw (25) that day.
Muphry alert?

Hoiberg is a class act, just watched his post-game presser, didn't whine or complain about anything, just gave TSJ and crew credit and has a real business like approach to things
Amen. Dude can coach.
Seems like the kind of guy who could stay at a place like NB and become God - even while the blue bloods keep coming after him.
With NB fan support for anything Red, that place will soon develop a Kohl Center reputation.

Well, what play did you see???
Lehman Trilogy. A history of the now-defunct investment bank. It's even worse than it sounds. Actually, a somewhat engaging immigrant story from 1840s to WW I. Then it's an hour+ of sheer cringe. I haven't been this embarrassed for adults on stage since the last time I saw Kevin Willard on the sideline for Maryland. (So... Wednesday.) It's a problem when someone who believes fervently in Marx's vacuous and utterly discredited labor theory of value, obviously never studied even rudimentary economics, and has no grasp of human nature, tries to hold forth for three hours on the alleged evil of free association and trade, paid for by a group of the most economically productive humans ever to walk the earth. There's a further discourse on the tip of my tongue regarding masochism and the appeal of a politics of envy and resentment to the well-heeled classes; however, I'm wary even of having written the foregoing here in a postgame thread so I'll repair to my coffee and spare everyone further boredom.

Its obvious from its 20th century track record that Marxism has neither soul nor wit. I learned yesterday, at the loss of 3 hrs 30 mins of my life, that, unsurprisingly, it lacks brevity, too. So 0-for-3 there.

The funniest part was that during the second intermission, as the theatre is directly across the street from the Capital One Arena, we watched through the four-story glass windows as a traffic cop ticketed every single car parked along the street. The ACC title game was played there last night and I guess that was a no-parking zone from around 4 p.m. Anyway, I stood there as he ticketed windshield after windshield and thought: "Well, this afternoon actually could be worse."

Listen, I just want to forget it all. I'm looking forward to the first half of B1G Basketball in 60 at 2 p.m. ET today so I can cleanse my palate with the relatively pleasant first 22 mins of the Nebraska-Illini game.

Looking forward to the Ayo vs. Jr. battles in the Association next season. Ayo's pro game is coming along nicely (some 34-point games lately). And Shannon will take nicely to the next level with ease. Attention Recruiters: More Illini players like these -- please.

I mean, fatigue is real. Every team experiences it. Normally I like Fred Hoiberg but felt like he wasn’t giving Illinois a lot of credit for taking over in the second half. In some ways, that is a disservice to his team, who put up one hell of a fight. His guys fought hard and they should be proud.

Haven't read the entire thread....and I am in no way comparing this game to the comeback win over Arizona in 05....but as the final seconds tic'd off the clock yesterday, that's the first thought that came to mind.....great comeback after a dismal first half....lets start out todays game with same intensity that we finished yesterday with

Funny thing to me is Hoiberg seemed like he was on the hot seat (maybe warm seat) pretty recently. May be reading it wrong but that’s the impression I had prior to this season. I know it’s been a long road for Nebraska but he’s a guy to keep for sure.

It's definitely real, and I'm sure there was some factor. The big thing I have with Hoiberg's comments is that Nebraska also had a double-bye like Illinois had. If it would have been Wisconsin (3 games in 3 days) or a team that played on Wednesday, I'd understand it more. Nebraska and Illinois both played Friday and that's it. Illinois seemed to get stronger.

A coach will always say what's needed to protect his players, but if I were Fred I'd ask my S&C coach and training staff why Illinois seemed to get stronger as the game went on and his team seemed to wilt.

He WAS the mayor of Ames Iowa as a student at Iowa State, you know...a real politician (and a class guy--not to mention a Chicago Bull...)

Hes a very, very good coach and we havn't heard the last of him.

You've been Fletched!!! And Sanderson is now in second chair.💪
BU always talks about MD's conditioning but TSJ never stops on either end.
Our guys have built-in nuclear reactors.

Not to mention Rodgers hammering the boards for 40 minutes as an undersized rebounder-- 13 big ones last night.
I love this team and when Quincy gets going--look out! I think he's been hurt but looked yesterday. Eighteen minutes of sheer joy and aggression!
