Fantastic breakdown ... Someone watched the film or took really good notes on our OL during the game ... ;)

Bart did not feel comfortable throwing Whitenack or Henderson at RT for that Toledo game ... Did not think they were ready and we were down and he went with experience ...

He would prefer to keep that left side in tact if he can ... Bret prefers that as well ... But Adams is so flexible that in competitive games you need to move him around ...

Ideally though, Gesky plays better ... Crisler adjusts to RT ...

But, like I said ... Would not be shocked if Henderson or Whitenack get some time at RT as the season goes on ... Bart and Bret really, really like Henderson and he will likely be our starting LT next year ... So getting him some full go rodeo reps at RT this year would do nothing but benefit him ...
You’ve been listening to Bret too much 🤣

I thought Zy looked decent enough for his first start at RT, with some rough plays unfortunately coming in high leverage situations. Optimistic that improvement will come with more reps. He had a difficult assignment being on an island for a good part of the game. #56 on Toledo was a handful, even beat Pearl a few times with speed.

Makes sense. I noticed it was definitely the right side of the line struggling Saturday, but it was being manned by two young guys who will surely get better with film, reps, etc. Imagine that we are to the point as a program that we can boil down needed improvements to individual line play. Man, what a long time coming for our program!

Think our strategy will have to be keep away, so makes sense to work more RB's into the equation.

I wish we used more split back sets with like Laughry/Love/Isaiah and then a bigger back/H-back.

I did like the wrinkle Lunney added where Altmyer will ride the hand off up into the line of scrimmage, don't remember us doing that a lot last year. I'm assuming we will have some gotcha type fakes from that look too.

They like Pearl & Adams on the left side ... Think Zy going back to guard and repping Whitenack/Henderson at RT will be the plan if Gesky struggles continue, injuries, etc. ...

I know they are repping it in practice this week with both those guys at RT ...
Our right tackle got beat at least 3 times on a simple spin move by the D........nimble feet should be required along with an understanding after the 1st time getting beat to look out for that......

Which is why Bret has been really focused on the OL this week ... If we want to win, they are going to have to play better ...

And if I'm KU, I sell my soul to stop the run. I believe Leipold can do that, will he?. If Illinois is going to score make them do it quick with very few long sustained drives. Make Illinois go over the top and score quick or punt. Either way that gets KU offense back on the field. KU is comfortable in a track meet. Illinois not so much.

Fortunately KU didn't look all the impressive vs. Missouri State so both teams are in the same boat going into week 2.

Their QB, Jalon Daniels is still day to day with his back injury. This quote from the Kansas City Star yesterday 9/5:

“Jalon is feeling better but didn’t have enough practice reps to feel comfortable as the season (approached),” Leipold said. “... When you watch Jalon warm up, he’s been good. It’s kind of a day-to-day thing, making sure he feels right.”

That’s very vague. Both QBs are listed on the game list so either could play.

Obviously better for us if JD doesn’t go, but the backup Bean looked really solid (against Missouri state). Also another possibility is that JD tries to go and is not his normal self with throwing and running.

Jalon is good to go. They will probably play both guys though.

Good thing our QB1 can sling it!

If Kansas offense is so much better than their defense, it might be the perfect game to resurect the barge formation to slow them down and win the time of possession . At least part of the game. Im hoping our defense has had a come to JESUS moment watching the Toledo game and comes hungry !

With a convincing win I think Top 25 is possible. Voters tend to like the idea of big matchups for tv. So you will sometimes see a bump due to that. That said, rankings mean so little this early, plus we still need to beat Kansas on the road, which is no easy task. Get it done though, and then upset PSU, and now we're probably flirting with the top 15
I’d prefer to play Penn St unranked coming off a win vs KU. we need to stay disrespected as long as possible.

In general, I always support getting ranked when it's a possibility ... I don't think anyone should underestimate the number of casual fans across the nation who subconsciously write off any program that they don't routinely see in the top 25, and many publications/social media outlets literally only report on top 25 games out of convenience. If this team cannot have a massive chip on its shoulder that (A) we choked away Indy last year and (B) pretty much no one is treating us as an actual contender for the West this year, I worry about us.

In fact, anecdotally, I would say our national (lack of) respect is off the charts now that we barely survived Toledo. I will not be alarmed by a loss to KU at all, and we can still have a great season. However, I will really start to be worried if the penalties are still an issue and the defense doesn't have a bounce back game here.

100% agree

JMO but I feel pretty good if the OL is the focus of talk of improvement after Week 1

I was feeling real good about the WR room and depth coming into this season and still feel the same way. Altmyer not only has wheels but his pocket presence to read the pressure and escape the pocket was amazing so early in the season. I think we have depth/rotation at RB/OL that can shuffle some pieces in and out, so excited to see this year progress. Throw in Altmyer opens up the running/passing game by keeping the D honest with his legs.

I love pancakes.....think Henderson has that Bailey/Jacas impact potential for his first season and beyond
