What would you project Thorne's numbers to be in Big10 play?
Maybe 7 points and 5 rebounds / game

I think he'd flirt with a double-double most games. Could see him averaging 10 and 7/8 or something like that. And of course provide solid interior D, at least much better than what we had this year.

I saw Naz Long for Iowa State just got the OK on his hardship waver. I know Thorns is tricky because of the Indiana game being later in the year. But Naz and Thorn both played in 8 games on the year.

I'm not getting my hopes up but Thorne's diabetes/medical conditions seem like he could maybe just maybe be an exception. Groce seemed relatively confident that it's worth pursuing so I'm thinking we could possibly get lucky.

Thorne's is tricky because it's a 6th year and he played later in the year. Naz's was a pretty easy decision since he'll just be a 5th year senior and he stayed under the 30%. I'm still feeling like Thorne has a similar chance to Abrams though. I don't think they'll punish Thorne for trying to come back. He stayed under the 30% and couldn't keep up due to his health, I think that should be good enough.

Just seems to me that if they've had the time to review Naz Long, they should have already ruled on Tracy Abrams. Is this a process or is it not?

I think you are low balling him. He showed he could score and rebound against good teams. Heck, even coming back for the one game and playing injured, he had 9 rebounds against the conference champs.

I think he would be a 10+ and 7+ guy. Actually 10 and 7 is what he had in the first half against nationally ranked Iowa State.

Take a look at what he did earlier on his career against lesser competition. I think many posters got excited about a couple games out of conference but the level of competition in the Big10 will lower his numbers.

He had never been in the shape he was in here earlier in his career. Look at his film. Totally different body.

I judge on what I see and how it translates to whom he is playing. He can definitely rebound in the BT, and his offensive abilities translate to the BT (rebound put backs and a hook with either hand).

Also, big men often blossom late and he appeared to have come into his own.

When he is healthy, name 3-4 centers in the BT better than he is.

His rebound numbers may not be that high but thats only if we get healthy Leron back. Because we know he will snatch every rebound in sight.

So do we hear next week on the Thorne waiver? My guess is, yes.

True. Big men do blossom late and a major part of that is physical development. Fletcher did wonders for Mike. He posted a pic on instagram and the dude had abs. That's a 6'11 frame at a cut 275-280lbs. Big Mike is a specimen. That's a man amongst boys who can bang down low with anyone. Getting him another year would be a spectacular thing.

Quick hello. Daily reader of the site for couple years now and first time posting, go figure.

I thought I'd share my little story about the night we played Iowa State.

As I'm walking up to the arena, I was going to have a quick smoke before going in. I see this big guy with a Illinois jacket on so go stand by him. We get to talking about how nice it will be to have Nunn and Black once they come back(both ended up playing that night).

After I asked him how he became a Illinois fan being from Charlotte, his response was my son is on the team, I should of known it was Mr. Thorne. I say how much I'm liking his game and that "I really wish we had him for more than one year". I still remember saying that like it was yesterday and still feel kind of bad saying it especially after what happened.

I was sitting behind the bench next to the tunnel where they took Big Mike. He was trying to walk around, the pain in his face and voice I knew his season was over. So I'll be rooting for Big Mike more than ever this year. I know this has nothing to do with it, but they got to let him come back. Here's hoping.

Despite the source that it comes from, I thought that this article did a fairly decent analytical analysis of where Big Ten programs have been during a five year stretch. It hurts to see the beloved so far down the list, but here's to hoping to change that during this upcoming season.

Thanks for posting. That was interesting. Tells the story about as you would expect if unbiased numbers are used.

Thanks for posting... Good set of details with research...

The sad part is that even when confronted with the facts, there are so many on here that think everything is just fine and we should continue to just plug along and accept mediocrity... :tsk: :tsk:

Literally nobody thinks that

Malcolm richly deserves the love he's been getting in the press this calendar year. He's easily my favorite Illini since DJ Richardson.

Plenty more good press to come. I think he's going to make a name for himself this year.
