Honestly, other than recruiting, I didn't love Golesh's coaching work. We regressed a ton on ST, and our RBs/TEs weren't ever great under him, either (although that can be tied to usage)

Expected him to leave, oh well, this is the price we are paying for incompetence. Good luck Alex, you've been a pretty good coach for us.

If I may, why did you expect him to leave? Insight or observation? If it is insight I'm just curious and I'm not asking for details.

This was pretty much guaranteed to happen.

Does anybody know if there's any truth to the rumors that 2-4 other coaches are also on their way out?

Plus he's one of the few staff guys that actually have value outside of our team, he was going to have options and I fully expected him to explore them.

And while it was just a small snapshot, Cubit and Golesh got into it a bit after the Caleb Day leap penalty.

I've noticed Cubit really likes to get after his peers on the staff for minor issues, but won't admit his own faults. I love it. :tsk:

Now we move to the Mike Phair watch. We're 3-9 this year without him. Unless you believe this season's defensive resurgence, 90% of which was D-line related, was Tim Banks' handiwork.

Then there is the issue of our B1G last place offense. Who's going to fix that?

I always thought the interaction between them didn't look amicable, but seeing them on game day is just a snapshot, he talked to Golesh the way an old 1st Sergeant used to talk to me and I hated that guy, lol.

Makes complete sense, thanks for the reply. Who knows maybe I'll run into him here in Des Moines.

Ryan Cubit, obviously.

Don't forget Fej. D Line was huge, but Fej being effectively a LB with his athleticism, tackling soundness, and ability to read and react at an elite level really made our defense what it was. We will regress just by losing him. His backups didn't exactly inspire confidence for the future this year.

The offense? I don't know - if the pro-Cubit faction were answering that, maybe a jugs machine?

Losing Phair would be a big blow for the defense.

Now what does Ryan Cubit take over, offense of special teams coordinator?

Surely well spend big time money on the rest of the staff since we saved so much on the HC

Everything will be just fine as long as the highly sought after offensive genius, Ryan Cubit, can be retained.

Is this really that big of a loss for Illinois? He wasn't a very good coach and as a recruiter, well...Illinois is ranked last behind Rutgers. Good luck to Alex and Matt Campbell, Ames is a tough place to win.

Not counting what Nate or Riley did for us as players, are they adequate coaches? Do they have the resume and ability to have these jobs, or is our love for them as former players clouding our judgment?

I have no idea or bias really behind this question, just interested in if they are coaching their weight. (I know Riley was a grad assistant)

Well, take a look at the recruiting class we landed after the 2014 season (and bowl game). It's impossible to recruit during an interim year. He was a solid recruiter. Of note, Ryan Cubit took over the Recruiting Coordinator role from Golesh this year, and our recruiting tanked as well. Pick which reason you prefer, interim Bill, or Ryan the RC, but either way, the future is not bright in that department.

I guess this is speaking for myself but I assume many people have similar thoughts. I really like and admire their love for the school and football program. Both seemed like smart players and good leaders, and being quarterbacks, probably have a decent grasp of game planning and coaching. However, both are still extremely young and I don't view them as anything more than grad assistants or potentially very low level assistants.

Feel great for him and anyone else who is able to get off this ship of fools.

Yep... the only coaches sticking around are those that have absolutely no prospects elsewhere.

Why would any coach stay unless they had to? You are 97% guaranteed to be let go sometime in the next 1-2 years.
