BOOM! Feed my ego.
McGee was let go for reasons other than performance. It was discussed on one of the forums here... I don't know what the reason was, but several posters alluded to the fact (that they knew) that it was bad and not performance related.

Also - someone mentioned that the DB's coach that was let go was terminated for similar reasons as McGee, whatever those were.

Wow, if true. Whatever he did must have been absolutely heinous, then, if his performance wasn't enough to can him.

I believe it. I don't think McGee was fired for performance reasons. Lovie understands that the personnel McGee inherited made it all but impossible for him to succeed on the field within 1 recruiting class. McGee would have at least gotten a second year to use his system with his guys as sophomores. Doesn't make sense otherwise.

Other issues had to have come into play.

Defense wins championships. Offense is variable in any sport. You will have pad days. Defense shows up every day - again in any sport. Therefore, offense can get you to 9-3, you need a defense for 12-0. Anybody remember Dave Williams record game against OSU. Who won that? As I recall it ended up as a OSU recruiting highlight. That said, 9-3 looks really good to me at this point.

Heck, 3-9 would be a step in the right direction.

lol. Forget 9-3. 6-6 with an appearance at the This Is It Furniture Bowl vs. Rhode Island Tech would be amazing.

Illinois has 10 Big Ten wins over the last 6 seasons, and 27 over the last 14. Incredible. I don't foresee 9-3 on the horizon, but I'm a pessimist.

I think Rod Smith would be a great hire. Jeremy Werner, on his radio show yesterday, said he would be his pick out of everybody. Seems like a great fit for Lovie. Can't wait to hear if its true

So who are the realistic candidates still in play for OC? Smith, Hamilton, Canada?

How would people rank them and any other names that are in contention.

Seems odd that Smith was co-OC w/ Magee who was the full time OC w/ RichRod prior while Smith was QB coach (if I’m reading their history together correctly)...did he pass him up if Magee is rumored to be the new OC at New Mexico? Seems odd.

Maybe Magee wanted to stay in the SW? Lots of factors can come into play. Who knows. I like Smith's numbers. It said he had 7 QBs to work with this last season, or the one before. Will he know what to do with only 3 or 4? LOL

I have zero knowledge of Magee, but it makes sense. The difference between Albuquerque and Tucson is minimal, and they are within 6 hours drive. Maybe there is family in the SW.

I've not known much about Rod Smith as well but I like what I've learned so far. I'm okay with this hire, especially if Dawkins is part of the deal. :thumb:

Personally, I don't think I could complain at any one of the 3 being hired. Is Smith the only one who has a good chance of having a starting QB in tow??

We have our OC & his Name is Rod Smith.

If he can lure Dawkins, we have our dual threat QB that we haven't had since Scheelhaase & Juice.

Woot! Dawkins would be a perfect bridge to get us through this next year. Is there going to be any serious competition for him? Having Smith should give us the edge against most suitors. Dawkins didn't exactly light the world on fire down in Tucson, but he'd definitely be a huge upgrade for us!

Would be absolutely huge for the trajectory of our program. I'm happy with Smith, but getting an experienced dual-threat QB who already knows the offense would be invaluable. It would also give us a chance to let the younger QB's learn the new system without getting thrown into the deep end.

Hope Smith knows how to run the wildcat offense because without any QBs in the stable, that's about it for the offense!
