So there must have been some snafu with slotting Kansas into those two open years, as had been previously reported. Bring on Oregon State or something!
Charlie Weis is attending a planned grand opening of a China Buffet in Kansas City sometime in Sept 2019 and cant do it .

Yea, they bailed on that awhile ago - I think about 2 years ago already . Once they (PAC) decided to go to a 9 game schedule, and we were thinking of it , they both thought locking in another game , leaving only 2 up to change, was a bad idea
Why do we always get early bye weeks?
Bye weeks should rotate for all teams. No team should always have an early bye like us, nor should one team get the middle of schedule bye, IMHO most valuable.
Serious question: do schools get any say, or objections taken seriously, almost to the point of veto power? I would think, unless Illinois wants this early bye schedule, it is not very advantageous, and would voice their displeasure????

Does anyone know, if there is one, a discernible rotation as to who Illinois plays from the eastern division each year. I can't see one from the schedules that have been made thus far. Looks like we play Rutgers each year for the first several years with different teams mixed in.
I do not believe there are any protected crossovers and my guess is , all things static, we would see a even rotation over a period of about 14 years. Perhaps they made the Purdue-IU rivalry protected, and that somehow makes it a little cloudy.
that is the only long established geographic rivalry that got split up. Ours with tO$U is not really at that level, thank goodness.
Forgot to mention this, but Thomas said on SMSL Saturday that the 2019/20 home/home series is in the works and something would be announced pretty soon, so maybe we'll hear something this week.

I would guess one reason is simply logistics, having to travel with over 100 players, coaches, managers and the associated equipment, etc. Getting travel, hotels and all that is not easy compared to a basketball team with 15-20 people.
I think it also goes in cycles, may depend on the preferences of the AD. Until the recent wave of announcements, we didn't have any BCS level opponents scheduled past this coming season, now we've got them booked out through 2024!

2018 could be a really special year if we are even half way respectable by then. I see 10 wins that season!!
by lining up your BCS level opponent early, you avoid situations like we had under RG when due to few options, we were forced to set up deals with Cincy (they were real good then) or with Fresno St (beat us both games).
Getting it done now, against teams that historically are not better than us, is a task you can put to bed. I think 8-10 years out is all you need to do. I would be shocked to hear of anything announced beyond 2024 for quite some time.

I agree, the problem is that the Big Ten insists on starting league play in Week 6 (probably week 5 once we go to a 9 game slate). This means that you have 5 weeks to play your 4 non-conference games, and then have 8 straight games without a bye.
In years where the first game falls in August (like this year) there is an extra week of play and we have a bye before league play starts and a bye during the Big Ten schedule.
To me, it makes a lot more sense to slowly introduce league games in September (even make teams play one league game in weeks 3-5, that's just a couple conference contests a week) and that will give teams more room to stretch the byes out into October, when they would be most beneficial.

This is all about getting bowl eligible and building a solid base for the program. If you think you have a shot at a National Championship, then I understand the argument, but to just get to a bowl game a build your program/brand then I like what is happening with the schedule.
I'm not sure Illinois should be looking down their noses at anybody these days. I think they are still D1 or whatever it is called these days.
