Exactly, the issue currently is the number of recruits. Robert had some good analysis last night that showed if we sign a few of the guys were "supposed" to (i.e. those we are the current perceived leaders for) we would jump to best class in Big 10 West. This also assumes the teams ahead of us don't sign more recruits, but like Robert says it shows how close we are.

And this is with the staff getting a late start in terms of recruiting Class of 2017 players. I can't wait to see where the Class of 2018 ends up. Scout.com had a nice Q&A with Garrick McGee where he mentions how great of a closer Lovie Smith is:

Yes, I prefer to go by Avg Ranking when comparing recruiting classes.
Right now by Rivals rankings Illinois is 2nd in B10 West just behind Nebraska.
We are 6th in the Big Ten behind Ohio State, Michigan, Penn St, Nebraska and Michigan St.

We just need to close out strong.

Yes. The jump in quality for this class compared to the last several is staggering. Close out strong and we'll easily have a top 5-6 class in the B1G. Next year I expect that to jump up to top 3-4. :shield:

As many have noted, the recruiting rankings are calculated with an unusual weight on quantity of players committed.

That is odd, since quantity will only rarely win football games. You would sort of think that class ranking, lagged a bit for the players to get ready to play college ball, would be indicative of record. But when the rank is based on quantity, that is less likely to be the case.

Glad Lovie and crew are holding to the quality standard. It will pay off.

Love our recruiting successes, but this comment makes me rather sad.

Woohoo -- 11th best class in Big Ten!

Lets try to make you feel better Efrem. Last year scout's rating 2.32 this year 3.15 I believe.
Using the average number given per commit this year. Scout has us as 25th highest per player, and Rivals has us 23 or 24th at this moment . Rivals also at 3.15 or one or two hundreds higher.
Feel better now?:(

My personal ratings over the last number of years we always had around half a dozen borderline 3 stars, a few missing that 3rd star.
Using Rivals numbering system the players averaged out about 5.56 to 5.62. Translation lowest to at best a low mid 3 star. Those guys half a dozen guys I thought would never help and likely to transfer. This year more like a high 3 star or 5.71 and only 2 guys that fall into the scraping the low 3 star determination.:D

Every recruiting source says the same thing - quality is making a big leap. Great to see.

Garrick McGee was on Tay & Jay a couple days ago talking about what he looks for in a player. To paraphrase, he wants at least one outstanding characteristic - extremely big, extremely good athlete, or an extreme competitor. He's a great interview - one of the best communicators of any Illinois coach I've heard over the last 40 years.

Welcome Aboard Delshawn!

What a great get for our D. Hope this gets a few more quality guys to jump aboard the Lovie Train!

Smart decision. Want to know what it takes to be a professional football player? Lovie Smith and Hardy Nickerson know.

Thad is starting to become one of my favorite coaches. First he coaches up Foster and Corbin now he's keeping us informed the best he can. :thumb:
