I'd rather see us take a class of 25 and have 5 left over to give to graduate transfers or walk-ons, but I can understand the staff wanting to get as many High School players into the program as quickly as possible. The potential size of the 2018 class is what complicates things.

How is that kid not getting larger looks than Nevada, Navy, and us? Do the traditionally better programs not recruit punters very hard?

I doubt Alabama needs to punt all that often.

Additionally, this could be a cyclic trend. Unlike QBs and basically all the other positions, you probably aren't taking one punter every year.

Of note, there is also rankings of kickers, punters, and long snappers. http://kohlskicking.com/recruiting/national-rating-system/punters/2017

Teams keep at most 1 kicker and punter on scholly at a time, so offering them is pretty rare. A lot of schools also get them as preferred walk-ons. Our scholarships available vs remaining board situation allows us to offer a punter, you just have to hope they pan out or you're wasting a scholly for four years.

FWIW, McLaughlin is a walk-on right now, iirc

Generally speaking, programs good and bad like to fill their kicker positions with walk-ons. Bring in a few and have them compete with each other, and give the best ones a scholarship.

That's hit or miss though, particularly when you are starting from zero.

We're starting from zero, so we're willing to take a chance on one of the better prospects by offering a scholly upfront. It's a risk, and you're stuck with them for four years if you miss.

It appears that current Louisville commit Kaheem Roach is visiting us this weekend:

Deon Pate - DE

Bennett Williams - CB

Am I missing anyone besides Trey Creamer, who is not saying where he is going to visit this weekend?

We're obviously making a push to add as many DEs and CBs as possible.

Singletary just committed to Tulane.

My timing is great! Thanks Second and Chalmers.

Pate and Woods are very important now.

I'll hold out hope for Debose, Harris and Roundtree but it doesn't look good for us with those three.

Wouldn't Singletary committing to Tulane give us a little more confidence with players we might like more? Maybe we backed off of him because we feel good with someone else (or multiple someones).

That's how it reads, yes. If the staff wasn't confident in the DE visitors this weekend, Singletary would be on his way up as well.

Jamal Woods looks to me like he could grow into a DT and a very good one

In theory.

I doubt we would have taken all three of Singletary, Pate and Woods.

I think we would of taken all 3, I think we tend to pigeon hole these guys to much. just cause they are being recruited as DE,WR,OL or what ever doesn't mean that is where they will be in 2 years. I think this staff is looking more for speed, lenght, quickness and IQ, then develop them into what they best fit
