I believe most people were/are just looking at the stats:

In Taylor’s 2016 season, he had 1,542 passing yards, 1,671 rushing yards, 39 total touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions en route to a Class 5A championship for Peoria.

In Thomas' 2015 season, he passed for 575 yards and rushed for 194 for a 1-8 Marian Catholic team.

The big thing is that these are guys who fit Garrick McGee's offense, or at least he thinks they will.

Thanks, I was just going off of the little video I've seen of them, and I watched Thomas' a while ago. I remember some of his defenders saying that Thomas has no help around him and he was better than his numbers suggested.
But the staff obviously made Taylor a huge priority so I'm thrilled they got their guy. Recruiting for the system is always more important than star rating anyway (to a point).

And the #1 QB signs on with the Illini. That should get some attention around the state high school football recruit community.

With that ranking, shouldn't his offer list be longer? What am I missing?

Try this...I looked at video on our newest commit....Mr. Coran Taylor....then I looked at film on the #1 commit in the nation....Trevor Lawrence.

Tell us what you see. Withholding my own opinion for now.

Not to bring down the energy, but maybe we should cool our jets on comparing our newest QB commit, a solid 3*, to the #1 recruit in the 2018 class.

All he did was ask you to watch the film of the two and make your own determination of what you think the difference is.

Football rankings are nothing like basketball rankings because most of these kids don't play each other all summer long like they do in football. I have always wondered how a kid even ever truly gets ranked in football. There is only one way for a kid to get ranked in football and that is if they attend a national spotlight camp. If a kid doesn't have the resources to attend these type of camps then he will never get ranked correctly. This is only my opinion but its not like these kids are on national AAU teams that get to travel the country and prove that they are better than someone else.

I agree. Before watching him for the first time i was told about how good of a running QB he was, but I was shocked at his arm strength and accuracy.

Oh agree.

He threw that bomb to Jowers against Washington in the playoffs this past season right before the half and I was like

Also the TD to Jowers in the state title game when he was running to his left was nice.

Excellent point! Personally I'm thrilled that Coran Taylor committed to the Illini. That alone shows great leadership to step up and become our first 2018 recruit.

Good strong arm, though his mechanics look like they could use some work I like the way he breaks tackles like Juice. Looks like he has some speed with how he was breaking away from the pack on a few of those plays. I like him a lot. If we only had him for this year with how thin we are at QB.

You should withhold that opinion forever.

You can interpret his question however you want, but the intent is to create the comparison. I think Taylor is going to be a good player for Illinois, but he's not the #1 recruit in the country.

Football recruits are ranked based on camps, HS performance, HS highlight tapes, and offers. Coran Taylor just attended his first camps, but he's had a ranking on 247 for many months. Just look at their offer list (Taylor and Lawrence). Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, etc. don't offer because the kid shows up at camps (it's part of the equation), but they talk to his coaches, opposing coaches, watch film, and assess him against their other targets. We as fans care about his ranking, but most coaching staffs don't. They look for fit within the scheme and independently scout the recruit's ability/talent.

Do you think location plays any factor into recruiting? Coran has not gone to one camp before he was "evaluated" by 247. Do I think he is as good as the #1 recruit in the country? No. Do I think he is as bad as his rankings indicate? No. Do I think he would have better offers if he would have gone to more camps? Yes. The point I'm making right now is exposure is paramount when looking at recruiting rankings in football. There aren't enough scouts in the country to go around and watch all of these kids play ball and highlight tapes are just that. The exposure happens at camps and Coran hasn't been to any until the most recent one. You can make a comparison for player X to player Y who is the best in the country while at the same time understand that player X isn't as good as player Y.

If we can play a little bit of a hypothetical game and switch their situations where Coran went to all the camps that Lawrence went to and I wonder how their rankings would match up then.

IMHO, football rankings are the most flawed rankings of any of the sports because there isn't an AAU that these kids get to compete with one another at. There isn't anyone paying for them to travel the country to show off their talents.

Agreed, the recruit's location likely plays a role in their ranking. I just think we are talking location, and any other characteristic, regarding Taylor and taking it too far by saying he compares to the #1 recruit in the 2018 class. Thinking he's underrated because of his location or lack of camps is understandable.

Why can't we compare their skills? I'm not saying he's close but if that is the best of the best there is possible I'm happy with what I see from Taylor. If I were to say something along the lines of I think they are really neck and neck in talent I would understand your comments. That isn't what I'm saying.

When did I ever say you can't compare them? I just threw in my opinion that its foolish to compare them and provided supporting points, plus my comment was for the original comparison to the #1 recruit, not yours.

Still hoping we land Eleby as I think he'll be the better QB in college and would help with the STL/Missouri movement.

Moving on from the Taylor commitment, Eleby is the only one that has a CB for us.

He visited us for two games last year as well as this Spring. He has named us as his leader although his offer list isn't great right now (I know it's better than Taylor's).

No one else is really on the radar. We struck out with the top players in Illinois so we need to get the St. Louis kids. Ayodele Adeoye and Eleby would be a nice start.....

I didn't see this posted anywhere but one of the top players in Illinois in the 2019 class is moving from Chatham to Tampa. Not sure how much this hurts us. At least Abraham has ties to that area.
