Even though there are only 8 scholarship seniors, there may be some 4th year redshirt juniors as well. Some of them may not be getting that renewed scholarship for their 5th year if they aren't going to see the field under the Lovie regime.

It seems normally that at the end of red shirt soph's year guys are ready reading the writing on the wall. You should not be surprised if any of those transfer.

Just looking at the Spring roster, Austin Roberts is a prime candidate for this. He's listed as a RB so maybe they are planning on him replacing Echard in 2018?

Adesanya hasn't accumulated any stats so he needs to do something this year. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt based on our lack of depth at DE. Same goes for McGrew.

Guys like Hylton and James could leave on their own but I doubt the coaches would push them out the door. Neither are projected starters but they should still get playing time.

There are only 13 scholarship Juniors on the roster.

Even though we only have 8 Seniors on Scholarship for next year we're still potentially 7 scholarships under the limit of 85 without counting Lawson. That means we could have a class of around 15 for 2018 even before taking into account transfers and guys who will not have their scholarships renewed.

Illinois signed 22 last year and 3 of those are no longer with the team, so there's room.

Wrong..... I think you subtracted out the three players twice and then you did not add in the transfers (LB Nickerson, DE President, ?) who I assume count towards the 25. Twenty five players signed NLIs and Doug Kramer was a grey shirt I believe who I did not count. Pulley did not make it into IL??? Two others left but not sure if those scholarships open up. Is there a cutoff date or time that determines if a scholarship does not count towards the 25 if a freshman leaves the program? Then there is always the possibility a walk on got a scholly thrown there way but I do not remember hearing that this happened.

Not sure what you mean by "subtracted twice"? I'm talking about Peters, Pulley and Fish. My assumption is if they are gone prior to signing day then those spots would be open? Don't know how the grad transfers are counted.

This argument is academic and the true number won't be realized for a long time. It's an easy assumption that they will get high teens to very low 20's for 2018 commits.

Roberts is the backup to Echard, yes. He actually played behind him this year and got snaps, although I believe he got injured again.

McGrew has recorded stats at LEO behind Smoot in 2015 season (pre-Lovie) and will likely be a starting DE for Ball St, although I would bet he winds up being overtaken by a freshman based on what we saw occurring at other spots last season.

I believe the Big Ten conference is one of the conferences that guarantee a 4 year scholarship unless you violate some rule! I could be wrong but I don't believe you can just not renew a kids scholarship all "Willy Nilly"

He's talking about redshirt juniors. Guys who've been on campus for four years and have a degree. Those guys can then do the graduate transfer thing.

And although scholarships are guaranteed for 4 years, there is no doubt pressure for some kids to transfer.

Chance the rapper tweeted Lovie back. I hope they take advantage of that. Get him down to Champaign, help promote the brand, make him an Illini fan! That always helps recruiting.

Houston Griffith and Aaron Antoniou are the only ones who have verified that they are visiting this weekend. I don't know if anyone else is coming.

Andre Carter (Cass Tech) and Joseph Bonds (De La Salle) will also be there, plus a few others (Verdis Brown?)

I have high hopes for snagging O'Rourke. Too bad Verdis isn't visiting.

Is there any chance USF safety Devin Abraham follows his dad to Illinois? He is a junior, and enrolled early at USF, so I'd think he might be close to graduating, and could come over as a graduate transfer.

I was surprised that more people did not reply to your comment. When I saw that tweet I was astounded by how cool our head coach is.... you would never see something like this with Beckman, or really with any other B1G coach. I am really proud to have Lovie be our guy, and I hope he can develop some sort of relationship with Chance that can be leveraged in recruiting. My generation LOVES Chance the Rapper.

I might be out of the loop on this one, but

What are his connections to Champaign or the University? I know that he is from Chicago.

He's performed a number of times in Champaign (probably won't be back as much now that he's huge...)

You could definitely see something like this out of Harbaugh (e.g. "Who's Got It Better Than Us")

But I agree with you, Lovie has this kind of cool swagger about him whether it comes to recruiting visits in recruits' homes, interacting in the UIUC community, and just on Twitter. A lot of other coaches come off as trying too hard, but with Lovie it just seems relaxed. :thumb:
