Other than Ford, are we seriously recruiting any other 4* prospects? Lovie commented earlier this year about how recruiting has changed since he returned to the NCAA--that players were deciding earlier and that coaches needed to get involved sooner. Are we seeing any evidence of that for 2019 and 2020? Was the loss of players from Illinois this year connected to a poor in-state recruiting strategy where we fell behind, about a low key style, or more about focusing elsewhere ? To be honest, I can't tell if Lovie is comfortable with the approach he has used so far, or if the staff is targeting players earlier, especially within the state.

"Calvin Avery to take a few more official visits before signing day. He also says that his recruitment is still open."

We've heard this song and dance before. I'm not overly worried. A couple kids last year did it and we retained them.

Obviously not good news, and it's definitely a little less than neutral, but not a huge concern.

He was upfront about this when he committed. The article seemed much more positive for Illinois than the two sentences you quoted.

True.

It does sound positive, but it is still not ideal. I feel like his commitment can be used to lure others.

Can anyone explain football recruiting to me? I understand there are more spots to fill than a sport like basketball, but it seems opposing teams are always trying to steal other players and verbally committed players will still take visits elsewhere. I was just curious if there was any other reasoning out there besides a numbers game.

Until a kid puts pen to paper (LOI), there are going to be schools that try to flip him. A verbal commitments means "for now" (i.e. squat) for a lot of kids. All schools try to flip kids. Different world than hoops recruiting, for sure (not that hoops recruiting is shenanigans free).

It is all a numbers game. Both sides are more careful when committing in basketball because it means more to both sides with a fraction of the numbers.

One of the basic truths when it comes to recruiting is you keep on recruiting your committed until they have signed. The staff was fully aware about Avery even Myers had mentioned thoughts on on further visits. You want the kid don't assume , keep recruiting.

This is so true especially for football. Coaches who do it right understand this and also understand that it will not be a positive situation if a kid has reservations or second thoughts. Let him get out there and look to make sure he is 100% sure in his decision and be confident in your staff that you can get him signed. If you're truly the place and the right staff those extra offers and visits don't matter. If you're not the place it's best that kid went on this visits to find that place because it probably wasn't gonna work out over that 4 year period.

Edit: in a semi related idea, Baylor coach Matt Rhule retweeted an offer from auburn for a commit. Said in the end the idea is to get the place in the best place for him to be successful (paraphrasing).

Great points. This is a life changing decision for the kid so you want to give them the chance to make sure they made the right choice. If there are doubts on either side then it probably won't work out well.

Arkansas did not want Luke Ford to visit any other schools and you can see what ended up happening there.

As others have mentioned, we had other players take official visits last year. Oladipo visited Penn State during the week of the Ohio State game. Carmoni Green visited North Carolina and a CB flipped to UNC after that visit in early December. Epstein took a number of visits as well. In the end they all ended up here.

Not to jinx the situation with out current commits, but this staff has only lost one player (Collier). Collier was offered by the previous staff and committed without ever stepping foot on campus. In the end he didn't want to leave Florida.

When someone says, "Not to jinx the situation..." it's a lot like "I know this might sound rascist but..."

Probably a GREAT idea to just not say anything.

;)

Just kidding... but seriously, we don't need the jinx. Heheheh.

He's a preferred walk-on. A lot of people seem excited about getting him as a PWO. Formerly from the Lake Forest area.

Not sure if it has been posted here, but I saw that Calvin Lockett has Illini in final 5 along with Oregon St., Purdue, USF and Iowa.

Ranked ranked No. 2633 in the country. Maybe if he works really hard he can move up to 2632. Sheesh, who does these rankings anyway? With what kind of precision? Really?
