Having lived in Austin for 5+ years, I completely understand the draw. It's unbelievable down there on game days, even when they're "bad."

Ah well. He would have had the best name at Illinois since at least Ade Adeyamo.

Not disappointed as I never really thought he was a possibility, but it does make all those visits rather odd.

I live up near Dallas, I hate Austin because of the traffic, but SOOOO many fans and just an unlimited athletic budget, so to speak, is hard to beat.

Cant blame him, lets get Brown now.

Staff better have a lot more Sydney Brown types in the fold cause even if we land V.Brown, there are a lot of open slots to fill and MOST public knowledge prospects are off the table.

I don’t see this class being as good as last years. But I hope we found some pieces at least to pair with last years class.

Was thinking the same thing. Not much talent left on the board and lots of spots, I'm good with 1 or 2 under the radar " diamond in the rough" guys, but I'm not buying that for the last 8 to 10 signings in the class.

So at the end of the first day:
(1) most of the Illini's prior verbal commitments are in the fold;
(2) potentially lost one of their two QBs (I sure hope not);
(3) picked up one way-under-the-radar DB; and,
(4) whiffed on a half-dozen uncommitted/potential flips.

Even if Brown, Slaughter and Taylor sign by the end of the week, I still think this class is behind last year's. Staff has MUCH work to do between now and February, and a lot fewer players left on the board.

This wasn't a BAD day, but it certainly wasn't highly positive either, IMHO.

BREAKING: Florida cornerback Kerby Joseph tells #illini Inquirer he has signed with Illinois. He got the go-ahead from Illinois this afternoon.

This guy had an offer from the South Dakota School of Mines. That's gotta be good then, right?

Wow, we let a kid commit then it goes silent, we now miss on a handful of kids we were hoping we had a chance with, we now go back with our tail tucked between our legs and say hey Kirby, sooooooo ya still want to come here? Yeah ?, okay sign this.

This recruiting cycle has NOT been handled well.

Per Werner, he seemed pretty jazzed about it:
"CB Kerby Joseph on getting the go-ahead from #illini to sign this afternoon: 'It feels amazing. I'm still jumping around.'"

Gratz to all the kids that signed today. Happy for all the new Illini headed to U-C. Looking forward to spring ball and fall camp. It's going to be fun watching the team mature this year.

Werner reporting that Kerby Joseph has signed. (Edit: And he just hit the list at FightingIllini.com in the last second or so.)

"When I tried to commit, they said they were kind of messed up with numbers, so they had to see what was going on with the scholarships," Joseph said. "When they told me that, I was scared like I wouldn't be able to go to the college I wanted to go to. But I just prayed over it with my family. The next day after that I knew I was going to sign. But I got the text right after school that I was able to sign. It feels amazing. I'm still jumping around."

I'm glad this story had a happy ending but you can see how the decisions the staff makes can effect these kids. It sounds like we were waiting to see what Adams would do and we're fortunate that Kerby was still available.

Welcome to the Illini! It's nice to read quotes from a kid who is excited about playing here.

We are very fortunate that Kerby was still available. It doesn't feel like the staff handled this recruiting cycle well at all.

I'll be interested to see how we close out this class. We have to land Brown and Robertson. We still need a DE and we may have to reevaluate the QB situation after Friday.

Not a great day, IMO.
