Of course I agree. In Florida and Texas, you have teams with multiple P5 players. In Illinois, you're lucky if you entire conference has that many quality players. In the south there's spring football. I lived in Texas when I was in junior high. Even at that age, we had 200 kids in my grade playing football (5 teams). Football was literally a class in our schedule. There's far more training, development, and emphasis put on it down there. I don't know what the argument is?

The debate is whether similarly rated recruits in Illinois are equal to ones in Florida, Texas etc. I was just pointing out the evaluating prospects is not an exact science but it is likely easier to assess a kid with a degree of certainty who plays against other top kids every week. Luke Ford may turn out to be star but he was probably tougher to assess being a man amongst boys most weeks

Gotcha. I think for the most part they are. I also think the "recruiting business" has probably gotten substantially better and more informed in the past 5-10 years with all the new camps, 7 on 7s, etc. 10 years ago there probably were more lower ranked Florida/Texas kids outperforming higher ranked Illinois kids. Nowadays I like to think the services have gotten better at their rankings.

Werner is on radio and it sounds like Verdis Brown is going to Mizzou.

If I'm not mistaken, he was talking to Mizzou homers at that time though.

Granted, I don't follow this as much as others do, but I've seen nothing recently that suggests he's going to Mizzou. Maybe not Illinois, but nothing suggesting Mizzou.

So currently our class sits at #62. Since the Beckman hire in '12, the classes ranked worse were Cubit's "not ideal" class in '16 at #73, Beckman's '14 class at #72 and Beckman's first semi-class in '12 at #63.

Now a lot can change between now and final signing day, but other teams will be adding players too. Not exactly the foundation-building class you would want.

He just had his final visit there Dec. 16th, which is the thing that makes me think it could be true, as that’s when most decisions happen.

Wait, that was just on the 16th? I thought it was earlier. Hmm... then yeah, that is slightly concerning. I still hold that besides that, I've read or seen nothing that screamed "Mizzou" to me.

I never watch these live streams, but I am glad I did. Beyond him being an elite physical talent, he seems like a genuinely good guy with a good head on his shoulders. I think we got a very special one here. Welcome Verdis!

Listened in. Thought it was the classiest announcement I'd ever seen. To me, I just wanted him to get to the point, but I know to those kids, he's probably their idol.

Yes! Merry Christmas indeed! Now there's only one thing that would make it even more merry, and I think we all know what that is. ;)

There's a Navajo (I believe) saying that you should always behave in a way that would make your family at home proud. It's great for Verdis to have that attitude.

So much for the sting of losing Luke Ford. Would have been nice had he stayed at home. We could use more downstate representation. Regrets will be his.

Welcome to the Illini Nation, Verdis. You made the right choice. I-L-L-

Once again the rankings are slightly better than the Beckman era so far. But two big differences I see. Lovie and Co. are getting bigger players on the O/D line and Lovie's guys are getting to the field. Beckman was recruiting players that were smaller and looked like prep school vs Div 1 from many observers. Also so many of Beckman guys never made an impact or made it on the field.

I have no doubt that Lovie is recruiting to a clear system both on D and O and has a better eye for talent than previous coaches.

At the same time please don't "hate on" Luke Ford. Possible NFL talent and needs to go where there is a pro type talent QB. We don't offer that, and he needs to supporting himself in the future. Only wish the best for Luke in the future. It appears he tipped his hat to Illinois and Lovie, classy move.
