I expect at least one of the sophomore QB's to transfer, regardless of whether we get a grad QB or not. Based on nothing but feeling and my general football knowledge (stock is currently being sold for $0.02).

Did Robinson burn his RS? Assume MJ did. Taylor will obviously use his. My biggest concern is if we bring a grad transfer in, that at least two of those three leave for greener pastures, but I would take Tate in a heart beat considering we also have Williams.
Coran is the only one i would worry about transferring...I dont think he will ever see the field as a QB.

Robinson and Taylor have both used their redshirts this year, so transferring would mean losing out on a year of playing. (If they don’t get a waiver)

That could be a deterrent.

It could also mean MJ leaves if we bring in a 5th year and then Williams gets the nod as the 2nd string. MJ won’t want to be a career backup if he still has a redshirt year to burn on a transfer.

I think this could play out, but I also think Rod Smith would be sensitive to this scenario. He would only start the underclassman if he wanted to signal that Rivers would be better off leaving.

Everyone of the three QB's would still have three years of playing time at another school if they transfer. Whether they redshirted or not doesn't mean much if you ask me. Whats the difference about being a sophomore transfer who redshirts at his new school, vs. a RS Fr who will just lose a year of eligibility if he transfers.

Robinson only played in three games. Can't he still take this year as his redshirt? Or was there a declaration that needed to be made at some point that he didn't and other players did?

MJ won't be a career backup if we get a 5th year. He can still have his RS year and play 3 years after (hopefully Tate) plays a year. I'd think he would be in a better place doing that then moving to a whole new system since he would have to sit out the year anyways.

I believe Robinson can use this past year as his redshirt year under the new rules.

But wont accept Childress anymore 🤦‍♂️

If anything they should go after Michael Love from Naz instead of Childress. This move will make BIG strides with in State recruitment. He is a much better ball player than Childress and it's not close.

Agreed. Love is Tarik Cohen-like.

Taylor would make a great WR.
Hope he stays and Changes positions.

I said he could leave to avoid career backup status if we got a 5th year AND Williams was given the 2nd string spot. If MJ gets 2nd string behind a 5th year then I agree that he would for sure stay.

Although I agree with your ideology...

Tate transfers here he is the starter Day1. That is the second year in a row you have brought in a 5th year over your recruits. Rivers won’t see it the way you described it. He doesn’t want to be a back up as he is good enough to play somewhere at the D1 level and that is his goal. Look at the Bryant kid at Clemson. Sitting and watching isn’t in their DNA.

Remember Illinois had 4 wins last year and Rivers was ok, but unproven. Rivers as RS freshmen/sophomore may have to backup.
Tate is proven and experienced. Illinois is not in a position to turn away this type of talent.

Anyone else concerned with the comments by the Arizona fans regarding Tates all around ability at QB? From comments it sounded like they he had trouble learning the playbook and took off running (albeit alot of yards) too soon...
Quick summary of everything I have heard/read
The new OC at Arizona would berate Tate if he took off running. He would tell him "your a QB now, you have to go through all your progressions". As a result, he restrained from running. He actually still had a really good TD/Int ratio. Near the end of the year, even Sumlin was pleading with Tate to run more. So he was getting it from both sides. He is still very immature for his age. But did not have any issues with Rod. He would be a candidate for B1G Offensive player of the year if he transferred here... That is if someone is there to catch the damn ball

Probably get an argument on this, but, I wonder if someone being left handed contributed to some of those drops. Not all, but some. There is this thing called throwing a catchable ball.

tell the guys who caught passes from Mark Brunell. Mike Vick, Boomer Esiason, Ken Stabler, and Steve Young.

Im a lefty, but I played OG. but the spin on the ball has NOTHING to do with it

I did long snap, and because I NEVER sailed one over the punters head, he caught EVERY snap I made

I agree 100% that if Tate calls RSmith and says he needs a room and a locker for 2019 you make it happen.

My point is that the players don’t always see it from a development standpoint or a program standpoint. They want to play. If you don’t think MJ wasn’t on the sidelines watching AJ saying to himself, “I can do better and that should be me.” To be told you have to sit behind another guy brought in from the outside for another year again could be discouraging to these three young guys. That’s all I was saying.

The relationship with Rod Smith is well-documented and the opportunity for him is perfect. I know Illinois is bringing in Isaiah Williams, who they recruited as a QB, but he would probably benefit from learning under Khalil Tate for a year anyway. Rivers showed some flashes this year, and I'm glad he's an Illini, but like someone else said above, Illinois is not the kind of program to turn away talent of any kind (unless it's the Kareem Hunt kind).

A 'catchable' ball is a real thing but never heard of it due to handedness. In HS our backup QB was 6'6 and had this tomahawk throwing motion with a very high release point. Very difficult to catch

Trinity looked good winning state title today. Game was choppy with tons of penalties. IW looked very smooth - 4 long Td passes - throws a nice deep ball and very shifty when he does run but he didn’t need to much today. Marcus Washington was the benefactor of most those long TDS with a few good catches. Besides that their O was carried by tailbacks who were both tough - oline did a good job of creating huge holes . Mookie Cooper caught 1 long seam route for a TD.

I found it a bit difficult to judge Shammond during this game - Ritter player spread and Shammond was generally playing very wide 8 or 9 yards deep in coverage.

Bryce didn’t do much/anything on O. Had a good pass breakup on D late, but you didn’t hear his name much

JMO, but our program is in no shape to bring in a 4*/5* at any position and not start (IW). I would absolutely love to see Tate here, but I feel as if the coaching staff should sit down with IW to make sure that doesn't mean we lose him. Now if hes okay with sliding in the slot for a season, we get better IMO, but I don't think we should bring in Tate for one season and potentially lose IW for 4. What are others thoughts on this? I could be thinking too far into this, but I don't wanna see IW go to Miznoz.

I agree with the main point in your post. But I think it's different for an "ATH" recruit. We were basically the only big program that recruited him as a QB. If he wanted to come in as a slot receiver, yeah he'd probably start, or at least be on the field a lot. But QB is a different story, and you have to play the best QB regardless of recruiting rank or age/class.

I was just about to write the same thing as a response. QB is a different situation than almost any other position when it comes to playing freshman, even if they are 4* or 5* recruits. Illinois brings in a 5* at any other position (except maybe OL in rare cases), he's an immediate starter (like Beason will be), but at QB, you're gonna start Tate, a 2018 pre-season Heisman candidate, if he's here. Experience & talent outweighs pure talent at QB. To @djkirkpatrick22's point, though, maintaining good communication with Williams is the key.

I think that Tate would, and will be I think he’s coming, but many teams start and are successful with freshman QB’s. I think we could be too.

IW has been 100% O&B long before he verbally committed this year. No need to worry about where he or MB will be next season:ms:

As far as IW goes, U of I has to give him an opportunity to compete at qb. That was the big sell point. Now if he is beaten out by a 5th year sr then, talk to him about playing slot. Not before. Also, advise him that he will be moving back to qb in the spring.
