Starting to feel like either Fleck or Lovie will survive/succeed, but not both.

Not sure why. Both are recruiting well nationally so it is quite likely that they could both be successful. Yes they have some similar targets but that is the nature of recruiting.

I'm betting that if Fleck turns the positive recruiting into on field results he will be on the move anyway.

Yeah I think they both can succeed and I wouldn’t get wrapped up into losing two targets to minny who in my opinion we were slow playing because we r recruiting BETTER prospects i.e. Jason Bargy or Trevor Keegan

Yes if the Gophers succeed ol’ cornball Fleck will row the boat somewhere else. I just wanted to thank the regular contributors. I don’t post often but check this site often for recruiting information or just Illini information in general. You guys do a swell job. GO ILLINI !!!

If I am reading the twitter tea leaves right we may have a Bargy commitment soon.

There is a strong crossover on recruiting areas. Fleck's top recruits from last year were from IMG Academy, and his top recruits this year are from the Chicago suburbs and STL metro area. There are some areas that don't crossover (Minny seems focused on their state and Ohio, while Illinois has spread out to the Dallas area and California). They are also one of the first teams that Illinois will have to pass in B1G standings (or, one of the first teams Illinois will have a chance to beat from a talent perspective). I do agree that Fleck isn't long for Minny but I'm guessing it would take two years minimum before he would leave, meaning that if Fleck gets the upper-hand we will have to wait for Lovie's fifth year (or a new coach) before he would leave.

I've always looked at this as two-step phase for Illinois to better established itself in the B1G pecking order (in order): (1) Beat Fleck on the field and in recruiting, and (2) Start chipping away at Iowa.

Could be Randolph from Belleville.

It could be Bargy but everyone seems to think that recruitment is going to take some time. I think Randolph is VERY underrated, would love if he committed.

Per twitter, we offered 4* Cornerback Isaiah Rutherford, out of Carmichael California. Elite talent with top speed. Top 200 player with offers from Oregon, Bama, Oklahoma...

Beating Northwestern on the field wouldn't hurt either.

I think under Lovie we are experiencing a slow build, but once it’s built it will be solid for a long time. I think Fleck’s rise will be quicker but he will either fall or move on. It won’t be built on a solid foundation.

Sounds like a Zook build plan.

I dont see where the need is to compare ourselves to Fleck or Minny comes from. Are they doing big things and is their program moving in the right direction, yes. But we are moving on a different level. No disrespect to Fleck or anything, but Lovie & his staff are building in's and getting to places that Fleck will never reach, imo. With Trinity Catholic and what's taking place in state, we will be at heights we have never reached this century! And add to that the NFL experience that is a major draw that these catches have and Lovie being who he is in his own right... Our National recruiting ability will only continue to build as this thing takes off! Go Illini!!

Fleck has a boat to row .

We’ve got a battleship that is turning around and it’s full steam ahead

A. They're in the Big Ten West
B. They're doing a lot of recruiting in Illinois
C. Fleck himself is from Illinois and might very plausibly have been Illinois' coach in an alternate universe (he might as well have been built in a lab by Mike Thomas)
D. Fleck is everything that is empty and fake and fallen about our modern society and if someone like him can out-compete someone like Lovie long term my faith in humanity will have totally expired

For me, at this moment, I want to beat them more than anyone else.

Okay, I LOL'd at that part. BTW, I totally agree. He and Minny must be destroyed.
