Man, you can really tell the difference between Illini football and basketball when the basketball recruiting board has probably 5 times the amount of daily comments then the football board, even though we're arguably in on a much higher tier of recruits right now for football.

I can't speak for others, for me, it seems much easier to keep track of the basketball recruiting. Less spots, less recruits, easier to get info or even see recruits. They play each other, to get some semblance of who is better than who. Football, I have no clue. I just feed off of the board reaction.

Yeah I believe football has more hype on Twitter right now but there are a lot of good players tweeting about us so it’s kinda hard to keep up but basketball definitely owns the thread. Also the football hype is relatively new still so I say give it a few more good recruits and we’ll all be talking

I agree. I check the football recruiting daily and am always surprised not to find anything. That said I also never post anything haha.

I follow football recruiting daily and it's a challenge. Take last year for instance. A lot of the top targets were gone by the Spring and it was frustrating watching them commit to other schools one by one. At this time last year, we had 0 commits.

How many people had heard of Julian Pearl, Jakari Norwood, Daniel Barker, Carlos Sandy, Ron Hardge, Antwaine Walker, etc. when they had committed? Who had heard of guys like Nick Walker and Sydney Brown when they signed their NLIs? There's just too many players out there and we don't know who has a committable offer or not since the staff isn't allowed to talk about recruits. Maybe it's different for people who pay for premium information.

I had certainly heard of Coran Taylor when he committed since he was offered back in December of 2016 and I follow Peoria High football pretty closely. Even he didn't commit until April 3rd. Then the camp offers (Walker and Slaughter) committed along with a number of 3 star kids from Florida. The only one out of that group I had heard of before they were offered was Slaughter and I had only heard of him since I remembered seeing him on EdgyTim's watch list for the Class of 2018 and I thought he had the perfect name for a football player.

I don't follow basketball recruiting at all and even I know who the top targets are for the Spring. I'm actually kind of puzzled as to why there is so much discussion about such a small number of players.

Thankfully this year is quite different for football recruiting. Two top 60 recruits who we've been recruiting for 1+ year are committed. I had even heard of Griffin Moore before he was offered by Illinois last fall since I remember he took over at QB for Bloomington when Colton Sandage tore his ACL.

With this being a smaller class and us getting attention from higher ranked players it's a lot more fun to follow. There's a lot going on even if we only have three commits.

Is there a timeline of any kind for Billingsley? I'm hoping for some more commits soon to keep the momentum going. I feel like he could swing our way if things fall just right, but I'm not getting my hopes up too high.

Maybe sometime later this month. I've heard he wants to take a few more visits before making a decision.

Even if he were to verbal to Illinois, however, I'd keep an eye on that recruitment. I can only imagine what would happen if schools like Clemson or Alabama got involved. He just got an offer from Auburn tonight. Schools like Arkansas and North Carolina were also recruiting him last Summer although it doesn't appear like they have offered him yet.

This staff doesn't pressure kids into committing and want them to go through the recruiting process. This is frustrating to follow as a fan but it's also the reason why we've had so few de-commits the last two years.

Illinois has done a great job of getting to the point where they could be the leader for him but it wasn't long ago that Billingsley was telling people that he wanted to get away from home for college. This is without even taking into account all the Twitter drama with his dad.

Things changed when he visited back on March 8th. The visit last week also went well.

The commitments of Beason, Williams and Moore have also helped a lot. He and Moore are Boom 7v7 teammates. He was also teammates with Verdis Brown at Chicago Mount Carmel before both of them ended up transferring to other schools.

Yeah I agree and kudos to the staff for a full 360 with his recruiting because there was no way he was coming here a month ago. Also does anyone know when Erick Young’s spring game is he is supposed to announce his top 5 right after🤞

Eric Young said in a video that he and Bobby Wolfe (both CBs) were going to play together, it was a rival video or something. We got Beason, who is playing CB. I don't see any real interest. If we make his top 5 without him setting up a visit yet, ill be shocked

I know we live in a world where we want immediate feedback and satisfaction, but the coaches clinic IL is having with the high school coaches, I could see paying off in a couple years if they keep doing it. Kind of like the Trinity situation with the satellite camp 2 years ago

Jack Buford tweeted he was committing during the summer. IL has A LOT of people to fight off for this one

Wow rivals is a joke site I swear, once a day I see an article about Isaiah Williams and Marquez Beason decommitting later on. Plus I listened to Gorneys podcast, and the Illinois segment was 4.5 minutes of bashing the program. It is understandable to think that two big time recruits committing to a bad program is odd, but if the guy followed those recruits on Twitter I think it is quite obvious they aren’t decommiting anytime soon.

I would agree. I am not worried about their commitment considering this class really seems like it is going to land some big talent.

HOWEVER....it would be nice to get another name in here this week.

Yeah those are both solid commits it’s just sad some people can’t just be happy with a kids decision

Or you could look at it as click bait, in which the site is doing a great job of getting people to bite.

The podcast with Allen Trieu and Steve Wiltfong of 247 Sports is MUCH better:

https://247sports.com/Article/Three-star-athlete-Leonard-Glass-hoping-for-big-spring-116982103

They talk about Isaiah Williams' commitment and how much Rod Smith likes Williams at Quarterback. I thought the comparison to Tate Forcier was interesting but Trieu has mentioned before that he believes Williams will be a four year starter at QB for Illinois.

Wiltfong also mentions why he put in a CB for Jahleel Billingsley to come to Illinois. They also talked about other guys they have put in CBs for (McCray, Cooper and Henry).

Sorrells is another top 100 guy they mentioned.

+1 I'll never understand why so many think that the top players are only allowed to attend certain schools. And why those schools are supposed to be on top EVERY YEAR! It's time for a change. There is no reason the U of I can't become a consistent top 25 team throughout the 2020's :thumb:

This link took me to an article about a Leonard Glass? I was thinking it was the podcast you mentioned.

The scourge of the internet, measuring quality by counting clicks. Do a favor for those who put out worthwhile info by visiting them, and DON'T patronize writers who p!ss you off because they're always publishing cr@p.

Having been involved in internet publishing, I can tell you that "controversy" sells...especially if readers keep going back to make comments. Not only does it drive initial traffic, if often gets incoming links, AND it gets return visits, all helping to boost a sites standing and pushing it further up in Google searches.
