He hasn't been a public figure (as an administrator) for very long and has been operating with a pretty deep reservoir of goodwill.
It's not like he'll die or something, I'm sure he'll be fine. I'm just saying that goodwill goes away if he won't fire Lovie after another losing season.
Lovie was un-criticizeable among Illini fans, now he's not. Underwood has crossed that line this year as well. It's a different atmosphere.
Lovie was never uncriticizable. The truth is that he has received considerable criticism from day 1. It has been one of his biggest obstacles. This recruiting season has quieted his critics, but they are waiting for another bad game or more bad news. Whitman has absorbed much of the pushback and he will likely bend when the criticism comes from new sources (ex lovie fans) not the same sources. It is no surprise tha this season is big. Improvement will lead to him staying. Especially if we can get some good 2020 guys.
