Just a quick note on Clemson, a buddy of mine coaches at St Johns in DC one of the premier high school football programs in the country. Clemson has been thrown of the campus and told them to never come back, reason being they were telling players to transfer to IMG so they could come in early and get started St Johns does not allow that. The ILLINI connection is that he loves coach Bellamy and said what a class guy

So they want them to transfer to a sham high school so that the kids can graduate early and enroll in the spring?

So keeping an offensive coach around would have prevented a defensive coach from getting hired? That makes no sense. Disclaimer: I think Nate would have been great to keep around, and I thought the Miles hire was a disgrace.
Nate could have taken the TEs, move CP to Miles' spot. ;)

Because Nate would be coaching linebackers?
And Miles Smith can coach linebackers (I hope he can for our sake)? There's more than one way to construct the staff. In this hypothetical universe where we get Nate and CP: Bryd takes Nickles/LBs, CP takes safeties, Nate TEs.

Or:
Nate could have taken the TEs, move CP to Miles' spot. ;)

This was a fun exercise. Any other possible combos people would like to share?

Donnie Abraham leaving when he did really screwed us. If he had left in December of 17 we could have hired both Nate and Cory.
Only had 1 offensive position open. Neither Nate or Cory would be a defensive assistant.

At the time he would have had to get rid of AHS or Thad to get Nate. Lovie also had discussions with Nate once Thad did leave.

And Nate turned him down? Damn. I was hoping there was no bad blood, and that he could return later on down the line. Granted, Lovie may be gone pretty soon on down the line....

Nate may bleed orange and blue but at some point you have to put your career first. Matt Campbell's arrow is certainly pointing up, Lovie...consistently on "hot seat" lists. Can't blame Nate at all, he's latching on to a solid situation.

Wouldn’t it be great if Nate ended up being this amazing coach/recruiter. And when he finally gets his chance as HC he crushes it for 3 years at a smaller school...

Then maybe we can finally get a great coach who everyone wants but know they won’t get because he wants to coach at his alma mater.

A fan can dream...

I don't know about you guys but I'm starting to get nervous the With the way to recruiting is going The beginning of the year look to be promising with the addition of the transfers in the recruits that we had landed however is the recruiting season continues it seems to me to be Lesslikely that we're landing any top 200 or top 300 prospects Corey is a great recruiter however I feel like we need to bring somebody else in who specializes strictly in recruiting something needs to be done the methodology being used is not working what do you think? I feel like love you could be doing a much better job at recruiting When he was hired I was excited because I thought like a kid again when I played football if I had the chance to play for a coach like lovie with the NFL ties in the NFL experience I would have jumped at the chance so I'm not quite understanding why lovie is not recruiting better.. I know we need to win but you can't win without the players give me your thoughts

I don't disagree with your points. I want to just ask, what are they trying to sell recruits? Currently a program that has really sucked in recent history. The fact we are in the conversation with so many top recruits, even though we have been terrible, shows me they are pretty good at recruiting. Be middle of the pack at least, and then we can see what type of recruiters we have on the field. As I have said many times, I am 100% Jimmys and Joes over Xs and Os

Everything is fine, we are just pacing ourselves and not trying to peak to early. /s

If they win 6 games and get to a bowl, they should be able to turn this into a solid class since it'll be a relatively small one and I'm sure there will be a few grad transfers.

But if we dont make a bowl and Lovie is kept, this class is setting up to be a disappointment, especially after the early start. Werner talked about serious issues with how the staff approaches recruiting. We have I believe 3 fewer commits than any other P5 school, and they really dont seem to either be in good position for a lot of top targets (i.e. Moore trending Purdue), or they aren't pushing for more gettable players (like Nicholson). And with the early signing period now, more and more kids are committing earlier.

So I completely agree with the concern. I do think making a bowl game takes Lovie off the hot seat and gives us enough positive momentum to close strong. But with each target that commits elsewhere, things aren't looking great right now

I understand the concern and I’ve been pretty happy with lovies classes. Could it have been better, possibly, but we have been so bad for so long that expectations are to put together a bowl team. We can see the depth start to build and the talent seems good enough for bowl games. They are identifying diamonds in the rough each year. Ultimately, if this works, o think Lovie will have gotten us out of the cellar that got build by hiring a two year interim and firing a coach and AD right before he football season

Ultimately, Lovie is learning recruiting on the fly, which is not ideal. And he has us in position with great recruits. If wins come, the list will get longer and his non traditional style will pay dividends. If it doesn’t work, the next coach will have the talent to qualify for bowl games and build from there. But I’m not worried about the class, nor am I worried about his style of recruiting. If it doesn’t work. He will get fired and leave the team in a much better position than he got the team.
