We’re not the ones being picky.

I reiterate, you need to care.
Sorry, not really following what your saying here. If we get a 4 star safety in the next class, I wont care if he comes from Texas or Chicago. Yes it would be nice if we started making inroads within the state. But it is not a priority to me at this point.

How do you not sign anyone from the state of Illinois. This is a failure of epic proportions that needs to be corrected immediately. For the flagship University of a state to not recruit anyone from the state is utterly embarasing. I don't care how good or bad the other recruits are, to be shutout of the home state is unbelievable. Shame on this staff.

They literally they offered 19 guys and got 1. Yeah let’s go sign some FCS kid from Peoria so it looks better. The University also doesn’t even attract that many kids. More kids leave the state to go to college than stay in it. So let’s not act like it’s a big deal that’s ridiculous.

Couple of transfer names to keep a lookout for S- Kwantel Raines, DT Swan and Bryant lawless. Also look out for Ken Montgomery Jr.

Thanks for the names.

I thought Raines was headed to Pittsburgh? He said that he had already reached out to them but maybe they are passing on him?

Any of those Stanford DTs would be great.

Not sure how I feel about Lawless and I'm not sure what connection we have to him.

I'm surprised Montgomery hasn't landed anywhere since he announced he was transferring before the season started. He would be an outstanding addition to this secondary.

It is a big deal. How can you offer 19 kids and not sign any (maybe one?). And thanks or making my point on the University in general. Too many foreigners and not enough in-state students.

What about if the 4 star is from IL and we take 3 star from TX (assuming both states level of stars is the same)?

Here are some stats I collected from 247 for the State of Illinois
(https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Football/RecruitRankings/?InstitutionGroup=highschool&State=IL):

YearHighest rank to UoIStar level of this player# of 5 * in IL for Year# of 4 * in IL for Year# of kids in top 20 from IL to UoI
20207 th3 *051
201911 th3 *081
20186 th3 *053
20178 th3 *164
201636 th3 *060
20154 th4 *142
Those numbers, to me, do not look good.

So, out of 35 4 or 5 star kids, we got just 1 (based on the 247 web site)? Hitting 2.7% for 4/5 star kids within our border. These are not FCS kids from Peoria. UoI lost, granted we perhaps did not need all, 35 kids?

Nobody thinks they are good. We all get it. Right now, Lovie has to get the best players he can, wherever that might be. Over time, I believe we will do better.

And please show where these kids signed. I’ll bet most were Notre dame, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Iowa or Michigan.

If DT Swan = Stanford’s Jovan Swann, I’m all in. Mentioned him earlier in thread wondering if we might get in on him as he’s originally from Indiana. Their QB Costello also just announced he”s going grad transfer route bringing total transferring from Stanford to I believe 10.

So I will take a crack at it, Everyone wants talent, no one wants to turn away a good player from Florida or Texas or wherever...I think Twangers point is there is a ceiling on recruiting Florida/Texas, we have been able to grab a few good players, but getting Beason is the exception, not the rule.

It is going to be hard to get top prospects over Florida/FSU, Georgia...in Florida; same story in Texas with Texas/A&M, Oklahoma. Much easier path to compete in IL & the border states, so to think you can be successful in Texas/Florida and don't need more local recruiting is a bad long term plan. It also gets more difficult as you try to move up the recruiting ladder and compete with the big boys.

Year5 stars4 stars
2020None(5): NW, MI, TAM, IA, ND
2019None(8): MI, IA-State, MS, TT, ND, AL, IA, MN
2018None(5) GA, WI, IA, VT, NW
2017(1) IA(6) Miami, ND, MSU, AR, ND, WI
2016None(6) MSU, MSU, PSU, tOSU, MSU, MS
2015(1) MO(4) MSU, ND, IL, MO

IF we want to play to represent the B10 West, we better win 25% of these battles here on out. That is in addition to pulling 3 * out of TX/FL.

I’d like to see the Illini get more kids from Illinois, but it isn’t like they aren’t recruiting any. This isn’t a draft, the kids have to choose to go to Illinois and for numerous reasons already noted that isn’t happening. Winning will hopefully help change that, but not going to increase talent and win by taking just any recruit just because he’s from Illinois. Yes, the Illinois staff has to keep.building relationships and recruiting in Illinois, but also have to balance putting resources where they are having success.

True. However, we have been saying that for decades. As a class of 79 I have been patient. Guess with age I am running out of it. Time for the youngsters out here to take over that patience.

As I think this over, I think a good part of my frustration was due to "wait till Dec 18". Then all that happened was nothing happened that we did not know.

So what are our alternatives....do we fire Lovie and get someone else? Or do we assume Lovie knows there are good players I'm Illinois, is doing the best he can to get them, and see what happens? Do we make him hire certain assistants with Illinois roots? I think you are very much correct that we need to do better in Illinois. I just don't know what your proposed solution might be. I think the arrow is pointing slightly up. I would like to see it play out another year or two before we change direction.

Get real. We had some moderate success this year, and are trending in the right direction. But we are not yet a "better" program than most of our BIG competition by any objective measure, or in the eyes of recruits. I would sure love to start consistently beating out Iowa, MSU and NU for in-state recruits, but honestly, what do you expect? Those programs have been better than us for two decades. Its going to take more than a single .500 season to turn this around.

I *do* think that Lovie could help himself a bit by adding another guy (maybe two) to the staff with some proven recruiting skills and strong relationships to HS coaches within the state. We all know about the recruiting dead wood on the staff. But at the end of the day, winning, putting guys into the NFL, and attracting back the fan base will do far more to help our in-state recruiting than adding any one or two people to the staff. To get to that point, I am more than happy to welcome talent from ANYWHERE that wants to play here.
