You need to look at the combination of new transfer rules along with NIL to get a glimpse of the future. Take Ewers as an example. Gets a huge NIL package from OSU. Stays one year then uses his "free" transfer. Looks at going to the schools he really wanted to in the first place and NIL doesn't have to really be a huge issue since he already has his $$$.
If the NIL deals are provided by supporters of a specific team (as opposed to wanting the player aligned to a brand regardless of what school he chooses), going forward in light of sewers, these deals will likely have provisions allowing for termination in the event the player (sorry, student-athlete) decides to transfer.

But if the player (student-athlete) doesn't want that provision in the agreement, I'm sure the supporters won't insist on it. Not if it would jeopardize getting him or not.

So they are talking about Ewers getting "first round money" to come to Texas. That is mind boggling and blows his $1.4 deal out of the water. You think Texas funding sources would be ok if he only stayed there a semester, and they would not stipulate protecting that massive investment?

Cheapens the whole process. College Football was a great game at one time, now it will just be the mini-pro’s. Players without loyalty to a program.. just to the pay-out.

I guess I don’t see how those two things have to be mutually exclusive.

Can’t college football be great and have it be “the mini-pro’s”?
Since 2000, 22 seasons, 13 out of 32 NFL teams have won a championship (40%) . In that same time 11 out of ~130 Division 1 teams (8%) have won a championship. 11 out of ~70 (16%) if you just want to include power 5. In the last 15 years it is even less diverse and only 7 teams have won. If NIL further concentrates power to the top teams, it's going to be even more of the same teams winning. Is that great for the average college football fan? Some find it boring the same couple teams fighting it out every year.

I see what you’re saying, but I don’t view the game of football from a “who won the championship” viewpoint. I enjoy watching the games. To me, the college game is better now than it has ever been.

I see what you are saying too. Just different ways that we like to follow and cheer for sports.

Do you think Texas funding sources would insist on wording that allows them to cancel the contract if it means that Ewers would choose another school?

Money was flowing pretty good in the 60's around here! Anybody remember the "Slush Fund" that derailed Illinois sports for a good while. I heard directly from coaches how much money and houses were being offered to Oscar Robinson to come here. And even after that in the 70's I know the money pipeline started to open back up. Trust me on this I had "first hand' experience!💵💰
Is he any relation to Oscar Robertson?

Cancelled. Bummer. Has a solid offer list.
Would have been nice. I assume Cal got him back in which is a little surprising considering their coach might jump to Oregon if they don't get Kelly

Absolutely. Wealthy people have big money to throw around but aren't going to be stupid or taken advantage of. You generally don't make big money by making bad financial decisions. Schools throw around huge coaching money but don't have to pay it if the coach leaves. If you were a high roller and were willing to give $8M, or some portion of that, wouldn't you be pissed if that player left a semester later and kept your money? Essentially a 19 year old playing you for a fool. People will shell out big $ but they expect a return on it.

Here's a thought. Texas has already established a "Pancake Factory" program for the offensive line and called out how much it pays. If you believe the chatter it sounds like they are considering $5M+ plus for a top, unproven QB. Why not publicly announce a "Golden Arm" program for $5M? Think you would have at least one great current QB desiring to transfer to Texas and sign a $5M contract, contingent on staying at the school? Especially if they are a great college QB who's game would not likely translate to the NFL (see Tebow, Tim) and won't make much money, if any, in the NFL. I do.

If you don't think the NCAA has been the developmental league for the NFL for the past 50 years, what other source of player development/minor league do they pull from? Do you think it's the NCAAs choice for 3 years post HS before becoming draft eligible?

Trust that money has flowed the entire time.

As this is now legit, in the open money, these boosters are going to get more sophisticated about making sure players can’t do what Ewers just did and keep the money.

Read the fine print, folks

Ewers signed with an autograph company in exchange for autographs, with them betting he is cheaper now that he would be if he makes it big. His autograph worth doesn't matter which school he goes to. Unless it was explicitly set up by Ohio state he didn't take OSU money and run.
