Who does the best job recruiting your program outside the state?

Coach 1: Illinois is cracking. They are cracking in this state. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a school pump in like that before. They’re dominating right now. I think they’re really good. Iowa used to be really good and when Tim Polasek left, I haven’t heard a single word from Iowa. I think Minnesota is terrible.

How much do you think Illinois coach Bret Bielema’s background with Wisconsin and knowledge of the state is a factor?

Coach 1: I think it’s huge. The fact that his cellphone probably has 100 Wisconsin coaches in it, that’s a big deal. If we have a big win, he’s texting me in the morning. The dude’s pretty thorough, man. And I didn’t know him before. I never knew him when he was here before. So it’s not like I was a guy who was one of his people. I’d never met the guy. And now I feel like I could text him right now and I would get a text by tomorrow, whereas I don’t feel like I could do that with Paul Chryst. I’ll be honest with you. And that’s fine. I don’t expect that. I don’t expect that by any means. Those guys don’t need to be texting me back. They’re so busy. I don’t care about that. But Bret Bielema will.

To be fair, there are a wide variety of opinions to each question that was asked.

ultimate shocker:

Which coaches do you trust the least?

Coach 2: The one right now that I would trust the least and have the least respect for is P.J. Fleck, without a doubt. And I wouldn’t have to think twice about who would be the first one I would say I wouldn’t trust or would have very little respect for. I think he’s all talk. I think he’s a very negative recruiter and I think he’s all talk and not a lot of substance.

Sure seems like he cares a little about the texts.

I complained about missed opportunities with Rolder but this was good timing for Illinois. Offered a month ago and were able to build rapport before a number of big schools have started offering the past few days. Guessing the odds are no longer great with all of these blue blood offers but good job by the staff identifying a talent before a number of others.

Feel like most kids remember their first and last offer the most unless it's a big time school in the middle(I hope)

Rolder stung… no doubt!

Can we get some donors to do this? This is one way to get some road graders in!!

The arms race that NIL has unleashed will destroy (alter, if you're optimistic) CFB as we know it, worse than the facilities arms race. I am very pessimistic on this front.

In a world where CFB coaches are earning eight figures annually, I am not going to get the least worked up over linemen getting $50k or $100k here or there.

I think what those Texas boosters are doing is creative, and I greatly hope that Illini boosters can do something similar.

I’m not sure anyone is complaining about paying players. The issue is that college football is devolving to buying success and not much more. Pay for coaches, facilities, and NIL to win. IMHO there is nothing creative about what they are doing. They are boasting come to Texas and get (relatively) rich. It’s 50k now, and it will escalate when schools try and outcompete each other.

That's short-sighted and Whataboutism. In an arms race- sooner rather than later- it won't be "just a couple players here and there." Recruiting will become like ebay.

This is a lot more rampant in college football recruiting than you realize and payments in their various forms have been fairly common for 40 years.
I agree with you! NCAA greed and control freak status brought this about. While they became a little bit more lenient over the last few years, they spent decades where many athletes couldn't even afford a hamburger from McDonald's. There absolutely had to be under-the-table money.

I do too! Even the 4th string LT gets 50k, niiiiice

I don't think it will be as simple as NIL makes cfb an arms race. It's another factor to consider when choosing a school, sure, but players for the most part will want to play and NIL deals will be harder to come by if you're just gonna warm the bench.

Basically I'm still optimistic that if young men want to play football they will end up where they can play football.

Agree that the issue is not the paying of players. They deserve to be compensated in some fashion. However, if not done somewhat equitably, talent will be further concentrated on the wealthiest programs. This will result in super teams or a super league. Maybe that is what some want (ie, big time programs, dissociated fans who only follow the big time programs and the national media who analyze, discuss and promote the games).
