I surely don't want to lose Cal! When he was not rated and had no D1 offers I watched his film. I think he has the tools to be great. He has that play with confidence swagger to him.
you really can’t worry about it

when you recruit the best , other schools will notice & will do what they can to flip them .

you have to imagine the lines of communication are open and we are in constant contact

100%

BB and crew are finding some of the hidden talent before a lot of other schools. Not saying Notre Dame can't land him....but I would look for some Oklahoma/Texas schools to be all over him coming up as well. Swanson visited and committed real early. Sure it was a culture shock when we were the only big dog recruiting him. Looking at his twitter feed is positive so far though. Definitely retweets a decent amount about Illinois football and recruits. Loved his retweet with picture of Butkus in Illini gear and Bears hat.

Best thing that can happen for Illinois football is Cal Swanson signs in mid-December during the early signing period (along with many other recruits)

Someone this board is very familiar with might be a part of that trip on behalf of ND

Not saying he has interest in ND, but the last two words in you post are one reason recruits/players find it appealing.

A good showing this week and the rest of this year may get more of these 4 star guys coming here. I know BB wasn't a top recruiter at Wisky but did pretty good with the pigs. If we can start getting classes in the 30's instead of 45-55, those electric car motors will really start humming along.

I liked Howard's comments on BTN that soon, the top player in Illinois will say he is coming here and will ask who is coming with. He was adamant that it will happen if we keep playing at this level. Most positive I have ever seen him after biting his tongue during the LS years.

[EDIT: Fixed]

2017 he redshirted
2018 he played in 7 games
2019 he started the whole year
2020 he got hurt for most of the year, but it's a Covid freebie
2021 he lost his starting job and entered the portal in the middle of the season
2022 he's starting with us

He can't normal redshirt for 2021 because he already did in 2017, and he can't medical redshirt for 2020 because that was a free year for eligibility purposes anyway.

This is the end of the line for TDV.
Is this confirmed or your impression? I’m no expert but that’s not how understand the rules.

“Winter sport student-athletes who compete during 2020-21 in Division I will receive both an additional season of competition and an additional year in which to complete it, the Division I Council decided.”

So they get 6 years to play 5. A medical redshirt has always been used to provide an extra year to play so a player doesn’t leave eligibility on the table per se. I understand he‘d be able to request a medical redshirt for 2020 assuming he meets the criteria for a medical redshirt and would then have 7 seasons to play 5.

It is a fact that TDV is done, as has been expressed by him and Bielema and the media and everybody.

What followed is my understanding of why.

Players can receive a medical hardship waiver if the eligibility clock ran against them when they were hurt for the majority of the season. The eligibility clock didn't run against DeVito, or anyone, in 2020.

Everybody got a bonus year in exchange for 2020 automatically whether they were hurt or not, and DeVito is playing that bonus year right now, a year he could have gotten via medical redshirt if he wasn't granted it automatically. He cannot get two bonus years for 2020 though.

Personally, I think we all deserve two bonus years for living through 2020...

I don’t doubt that Devito and Bielema were speaking the truth, but things change a season later. If there is significant NIL money on the table for DeVito following a successful season, and he remains the best QB on the roster next year I’m pretty sure they may change their minds.

To me it’s a question of possibility, and I think it’s possible, and permitted by the rules pending a judgement.

According to section 12.8.3.16 this will only be his 3rd season of competition, so the waiver will concern extending his eligibility to play the 4th season of competition.

Superficially it appears he meets the criteria in 12.8.4 for a hardship waiver pending review of records, but would be a judgement call.

I've said since early summer a true hidden talent is, Aden Chavez, QB out of Cibola High School in New Mexico. Same school who provided the Big10 with Jim Everett, changed name HS. 6.5ft 210lbs.. When I coached up the road, 5 miles away we contributed Grant Herman's Purdue, now NY Jets, London Craft FS. Kentucky Widcats formerly Mississippi St., Keyshawn Banks San Diego St. Aztec, Marlon Byrd, Jacob Smith... tons on un known D1 talent. I am hoping they take a look at Aden Chavez.

I'm telling you man, DeVito gets an extra year for 2020, and he's already playing it. There is no question that he's an open-and-shut case for a medical hardship waiver, but it would be an illogical application of the rules to grant him two additional years in compensation for the same season.

I know, I know, the NCAA inconsistently and illogically applies its own rules all the time. But DeVito doesn't have a case here and I wouldn't expect him to even bother to pursue it.

So in other words your only reasoning is hubris, and “the media and everybody” says so. Congratulations.

A quick search pulls up multiple articles showing Devito wouldn’t be the first to have this accommodation.

Edit: Here’s another for MN WR who was injured this season and will apply for a 7th year of eligibility next season.

Listen man, I hope you're right somehow, god knows the NCAA does not apply its rulebook in a consistent or facially justifiable way.

But peddling "oh if the NIL money is good enough" is super lame.

And the rubber meets the road question here is whether the staff needs to prepare for a post-TDV world in 2023 by immediately being active in the portal once the offseason hits, and the answer to that question is that they absolutely do.

And to your links, they don't get at the question if 2020 isn't the year they're applying for the waiver for.

I'm not sure if it's true or not, but he did say "It is a fact that TDV is done, as has been expressed by him and Bielema "

I don't have that quote or article, but that's more than hubris. the fact that you truncated that part of his statement is not honest.
