If Donovan is anything like his brother, then they may wanna stick with the Leary already on the roster.

I'm pretty excited about all of our young QB's - Leary, Michaux and Swanson. We should be able to develop at least one good one out of the bunch. I could make an argument for any of them to emerge, but not for next year.

in the words of the immortal Bum Phillips , I heard Kirkland Michaux can throw the ball through a car wash and it won’t get wet

Absolutely no info. However don’t sleep on Michaux – he played for HS coach Todd Dodge who has developed a lot of great quarterbacks and Austin Westlake is a powerhouse

Christmas portal wish list:

not many seniors on the roster but between transfers and pros were going to have to fill spots.

offensive side:
1 junior/ senior level starting QB, can run but must be an accurate passer, able to make simple reads.
1 RB to compliment McCray, might see them in the backfield together
1 possession receivers (maybe 2)
1 o-linemen 1 starter and ? one rotation piece

defensive side
1-2 interior linemen (possible starting positions available)
1-2 linebackers we need depth here more than anywhere on the field
1 DB how many stick around? might need 2-3, rotational at least
RB is low the the portal needs list.

I think DJ U from Clemson will likely get the Cade McNamara treatment. If Spencer Rattler went to South Carolina then maybe Illinois has a shot. Probably not but definitely in a better position than last year.
I was at the Clemson/Syracuse game this past Saturday and I made this exact same comment to my tailgate buddy. DJ will likely be wearing a different uniform in 2023. Two watch-outs:

(1) he's incredibly inaccurate; he frustrates the heck out of a fan base accustomed to the CFP and Natty's
(2) for a guy with his size and athleticism, he sure goes down easily when running the ball

But yes, I'd still take him!

Does the football world operate like basketball where coaches can hear of players intending to transfer before they announce it? Could the coaches already have someone in mind for QB transfer?
I don’t remember the way he worded it, but Bielema sort of addressed that a while back when talking about the portal. What I took away, was they are always looking for guys that they would be interested in if they became available. I believe it was thru their high school coaches and mostly related to players they previously recruited. Not sure if that exactly answers your question.

zero chance. and, FWIW, I like Swanson a lot. Leary might see some snaps though, but in a seasoning role.
We are all living in Banana land if we think Swanson or Donovan Leary will be the starting quarterback of this team next year.

The most premium position will not be turned over those two unless Leary takes a massive leap forward between now and next August. Most likely will be a transfer QB with one year while younger QB develop for 2024.

Top of my wish list would be Cade McNamara once he hits the portal which is inevitable. Feel like he'll end up at Notre Dame or somewhere more prominent.

DJU likely too high profile to not be recruited to a larger football program. Other folks like Hudson Card would be pipe dreams but awesome fits.

Will be a fun portal season if we finish well. Will be a hot destination with a B1G West that looks opportunistic for Illinois.

Anyone from auburn got connections to Illinois? Seems to be a growing list of players intending to transfer

Right, knew there was someone else.
Ok, ok i'm wrong. plenty of RB's. In the Lovie era, it seemed like we went
thru a ton of them. They do sometimes seem to migrate to other positions.
Athletic, fast, played DB/linebackers in HS.

You know, There's a talent that good ones have to feel a cut back hole or
hesitate just long enough to set up a block and a burst, change of speed.
Brown for sure, McCray has shown flashes.

The hate for DJ Uiagalelei on here is too strong. He isn't competing passes at the same rate is DeVito (70+%) but it's fine (63.5%). DJ has a slightly higher passer efficiency rating that TDV, plus he's on pace for 500+ rushing yards. He has 17 passing TDs and 4 INTs. If he's interested in transferring and would consider Illinois, that would be a great option.
