I wouldn’t be surprised if there were from a production standpoint, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they were a better fit for Illini. I don’t delve in deep as to who is in the portal, so pure speculation as to what made Daxon more appealing than others.

1.two years of eligibility
2. Interest in Illinois
3. Willingness to come in as rotational depth
4. Fit for and willingness to play NT

As fans we often forget things like 2-4 above. And, yes, that’s called recruiting, but not all recruiting roadblocks can be overcome. If they could we’d have top 10 classes every year. And do we know anything about him this past season other than his stats. Did he have any kind of nagging injury? Was he being used same way. He did have slightly better stats the previous year — 6 games, 8 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack — and his 24/7 prep rating would have put him in at least top 5 in BB’s classes, so would seem to have some talent with which to work.

Not saying he was an awe-inspiring pick up, but how many of those are in the portal and how many of those meet the criteria above. I know Terah Edwards didn’t have much in the way of playing time/stats at Northwestern prior to joining Illini. Has he worked out OK? Honestly asking as other than stats I don’t know how he graded out.

NCAA hands out waivers like Halloween candy ... BUT if you have a sick grandpa back home that you want to play in front of and are leaving an SEC powerhouse to do it ?

Yeah you have to sit ... Sorry bout your luck

The Ford decision felt like a bum deal at the time, but it seems like so much has changed even since then. I wonder if he'd have been granted the waiver if his scenario were to have happened this offseason.

I don’t think the waiver would be an issue at all if this happened now. It was his first transfer. That’s now immediate eligibility with no waiver.

we landed redshirt Soph Luke Altmyer through the portal already. we are not likely going to get anyone worth talking about to come be a backup.
its possible though after spring ball. just not real likely.

I stand corrected !

any know if did he enroll in time to be eligible for spring ball ?

now we have some competition. some programs are bringing two QB's
in knowing one will leave after spring ball if he doesn't win the job. i hope
the second QB sticks around but you never know in this era.

redshirt junior.
his uncle and grandfather both played football at Illinois.

So…, not the starter? But was projected starter next year?

This summary on the official Ball State site cracked me up though.

2019: Served as the team’s back-up quarterback … saw mop-up duty on the final two possessions of the win over Fordham on Sept. 7, connecting on 1-of-2 passes … also appeared in the win over Toledo on Oct. 19 … did not have any stats in that game.

He was the starter this past year (2022). Sorry about formatting.

Maybe I am missing something here, how are we to develop a QB if we keep brining in transfers? Not complaining as we do have solid replacements for TDV but how can we sell the QB position to HS prospects if we keep transfers rolling in via the portal?

I agree its an issue. Its kind of hard to see both Leary and Swanson on the roster 12 months from now
